The Resort (2021)
Hilariously Bad
There is something so incredibly endearing and fascinating about a film that takes itself seriously when it is so incredibly bad. This is especially true when it is a horror film. Most low budget, weak script b-movies will inject some humor or subtle winking to the audience when they know their film is terrible. Bless those who make a terrible film and never admit to themselves that the film is garbage.
The Resort is one of those films. Everything is played completely straight despite the idiocy of the script and the hollow acting. The film itself looks much more slick than most films of it's caliber but most of it is pointless filler. Here are numerous minutes of people flying in a helicopter. Here are numerous minutes of people walking on a trail, with horrible audio mixing of four characters having separate conversations that are mixed over each other for some reason. The filmmakers threw everything they could at the screen to try and fill the thankfully short run time.
The last third of this film though, is the only reason to watch it. Don't take that as a recommendation. The final 20 minutes or so is the only time that anything actually happens and it is more hilarious than frightening. Somehow this film can go from an hour of absolutely nothing to one of the main characters having his face ripped open in a pretty impressive little scene. Everything else though, is complete trash.
I happily applaud anyone who can take a script this weak and actually find financing for it. The film is nearly unwatchable but it exists and that is a feat upon itself. Watch it to laugh at the terrible acting, terrible script and insanity of the final few minutes.
Katherine's Lullaby (2020)
Solid little kidnapping feature
I was able to catch a screening of Katherine's Lullaby during the Nevermore Film Festival this year, and wasn't expecting much. The film ended up being an engrossing little thriller and not the by the numbers film that I had expected. The film kept me constantly guessing on the direction it would take and ended up being one of my favorites of the entire festival.
Also, William Kircher is fantastic in this. What could have been a kitschy performance from any other actor is kept grounded and believable by Kircher!
Fucking Ghosts (2020)
Excellent comedic horror short
Caught this short as part of the Nevermore film festival. Short and sweet faux trailer about ghosts with an extreme sex drive. Full of puns and hilarious sight gags. It ended up being one of the most fun, and definitely the funniest, of the shorts that were featured during the fest!
