Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
Man vs Movie, Hype vs Reality
Never has there been a more torn consensus as to whether a movie is good or not. An abundance of reviews. Many good. Plenty bad. The question still stands however. Is Batman V Superman a good movie, or a bad one? Well, to properly answer this question, I am going to break the film down into 3 aspects and give my review of what this film does well, does not do well. Here we go.
The War between Batman and Superman: This is the reason people came to the movie. Not to witness conversations that would eventually lead to an 8 minute fight, but to actually see the fight. Well, while the fight itself did not disappoint, the progression of the conflict creating it kind of suffered a bit. Personally, I enjoyed Bruce Wayne's character and understood why he wanted Superman gone, though, I am still trying to figure out what Superman's problem is with the Batman. I get that he, as a reporter, thinks Batman is just some criminal vigilante, but there doesn't seem to be any justifiable reason that he wants Batman dead, or for wanting to fight him. If you exclude the scene of Superman confronting Batman and demanding for him to retire, this whole aspect of the story seems a lot more cohesive.
Partial rating 6/10
The Characters of Batman and Superman: One of my main issues with Man of Steel is just how little character development there is for anyone, including Superman himself. While I do find myself wanting more on screen time for Superman alone, I feel like this movie did a pretty good job and moving his character along. You get to see him as the reporter Clark Kent, which seemed to be a very natural role in him that I never questioned once in legitimacy. His relationship with Louis made a lot more sense this time around and his conversation with his Mother seemed heartfelt and really added to his character overall, as well as his character motivations. I feel like they could give Superman more Superman-esque kind of stuff to do, but really I just find myself hoping there is another stand alone Superman film, which isn't a bad thing. Now for Batman... He is perfect. In every way. Absolutely wonderful. There is literally not one thing that I do not like about Batman in this movie, and Affleck's portrayal of him. The suit was fantastic. The action scenes were great, especially the warehouse scene. I even didn't mind the way his voice was done. The only real gripe that I have on Batman isn't even about Batman himself, but rather his method of fighting Superman. I really wish that they could have found a way to even the playing field without relying of Kryptonite. I'm not sure what other options there were, but there has to be some other way that he can keep up with the Man of Steel.
Partial Grade: 9.5/10
The Alliance and The Fight: I had some really low expectations for the whole "Dawn of Justice" aspect of this film. Everything that I saw from the trailer led me to believe it'd be the aspect of the movie dragging it down. It really was quite the opposite. With the exception of Doomsday, the last third of this film was quite entertaining. Wonder Woman discovering all of the other Justice League members, while a little bit forced, was incredibly exciting and I had no problem with it at all. For Wonder Woman, a character whom I have never had any interest in learning anything about, to be such a strong and prominent part of this movie's closing act, was very impressive. The teaming up of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman was awesome to see. Even the fight itself with Doomsday was pretty darn good. I just didn't like Doomsday himself. It just wasn't necessary to bring him into this. I loved the way this movie closed out and it really did have me on the edge on my seat hoping Superman wasn't actually dead. The movie wrapped up leaving me wanting more. Again, not a bad thing at all.
Partial Grade 9/10.
Overall, a pretty decent start for the DCU. We'll see where it goes from here, but there is enough good to believe the best is still ahead. I cannot wait to see a standalone Batman film.
Pee-wee's Big Holiday (2016)
What?
Peewee's Big Holiday starts Peewee Herman and should have featured him doing Peewee sort of things. The opening sequence of this movie was perfect. Beginning with a blast to the past kind of intro in Peewee's house. I don't have many complaints with the first half of this movie other than it seems a little bit aimless and at times too dumb. I get that it's dumb, but it was sometimes just stupid. Not even funny.
The second half of this movie is a complete mess. The majority of which consists of a Peewee and whateverthatotherguysnameis just having some kind of acid trip mumbling incoherent nonsense. I'm not meaning to be too hard on the movie, but it was just dumb. Not enough genuine Peewee happenings. Really just a movie trying to cash in on the name without creating too much original content that's coherent in any way.
I will however admit, that the scene with Peewee at the Farmer's house with his daughters house is one of the funniest things I have seen in a long time.
You can watch this movie once if you're a huge Peewee fan if you want. Just make sure you're on something.
Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
Avengers: Age of Ultron wages war against the close minded.
Let me begin this review by stating that, if you're sick of the "typical Superhero story formula", then this movie is absolutely not for you. The people that are going to get the most enjoyment out of this movie are those that have enjoyed previous Marvel films. With that being said, let me get to the key points of what made this movie a success through my eyes.
The absolute most important thing for these movies to accomplish, is bringing comic book characters to life, to the point that you forget that you're watching someone portray a character, and simply are viewing the character in their natural form. For that, I'll give this movie an A+. The cast is the same as the previous films, but never before has each character seemed so comfortable within their roles, and their relationships to one another.
Ultron, as a Villain, is one of the best that the Marvel Universe has created. If I had to fault this movie for anything as it pertains to Ultron, I'd fault them for not involving his character enough. The screen time that this character receives is far less than he deserves, and I absolutely hope that's made up for with the directors cut once it's released. Ultron is convincing, funny, maniacal, and really just bizarre. Ultron, as plenty of great villains do, believes that he is the good guy throughout the film. He's not evil for the sake of being evil. He's good in his own mind, and that belief actually caused me as the viewer to almost feel bad for him, before remembering that he's a machine. He'll very likely be my favorite villain in the entire Marvel Universe after a few more viewings, and that's saying something, with how fond I was of "The Winter Soldier" as a Villain.
The "typical Superhero story formula" is definitely present throughout this film, but if you can keep your mind open, and look at everything else that's going on, you'll come out of this film satisfied. The character development, humor, and even storyline are so prominent and well done that it outweighs, by far, the "I've seen this before" thought process, because a lot of it, you really *haven't* seen before. I'm not going to say "Ignore the critics", but I will say simply, see this movie for yourself. Form your own opinion. Judge it based on what it is, not what you'd like it to be. If you walk into the theater, or turn on your TV, with an open mind, then you'll likely be as impressed with this movie as I am.
Interstellar (2014)
If there are critics out there, ignore them
Interstellar is all around a breath of fresh air. In the day and age of remakes and reboots, it's seemed more and more like original thought and great movie making were on the outs. Wrong. Christopher Nolan's two and a half hour masterpiece is an exciting, thought provoking, emotional, and original roller coaster. I waited a few weeks after seeing this movie to review it, as to let my initial thoughts cool off and hopefully gain a better understanding of how I really feel about Interstellar as a whole. Over those few weeks, all I find myself wanting to do is re-watch it. If you've not seen Interstellar already, I recommend that you do ASAP.
Greek (2007)
The only flaw is that it ends
I recently watched Greek about a year ago. Then again a few months ago. Now again right now. It's safe to say that I'm addicted. Greek is nothing like the shows that I normally watch (Lost, Dexter, Breaking bad). If you're looking for some light-hearted fun with a few significant messages on the importance of acceptance and growing up, then this show is perfect for you. The only flaws that I've detected in the show is that it ends at some point and also Cappie and Evan don't seem to have proper closure with one another. A 7.5/10 rating is about 30 points too low for this show. Yes, you read that right. If you think you'll like this show, please watch it. If you don't, watch it anyways and see how wrong you were.
