The World According to Garp (1982)
A forgotten great movie
Never read the book but watched this movie in the '80-s in a cinema. This was one of the movies in those days everyone went to see. Great characters and a wonderful storyline. This is one of the pictures only Americans can make (like Big Fish): a sort of modern fairytale with lots of unusual people but goodhearted and rich in sub plots. Watched it again on TV ages ago and never saw it again. Which is a true shame. Dear folks at Warner Bros: please re-release this gem on BD and DVD! Give it the credits it deserves. Take your time for some restoration, put some extra's on it (interviews with director and cast, a look back, etcetera) but give this movie back to the fans. We're waiting for it too long. Thanks!
High Road to China (1983)
High road to oblivion?
At last! After searching for this DVD for years I finally got my hands on it. Dutch Film Works released the DVD in Holland for a stunning 2.99 euro. I had this movie on VHS in the 80's but lost the tape. I just watched the movie again and it is still the terrific movie I had in mind. I never liked his role in Magnum P.I. but Tom Selleck is the perfect match for this WO I veteran pilot. My confession here in public: this was how I wanted to be back in 1983. Bess Armstrong plays the spoiled rich kid so fabulous. She always reminds me very strongly of a girlfriend of mine in those days. Not only the looks but also the behavior. Maybe that's the main reason why I love this movie so much? Anyway, the action is good, the music is amazing and the storyline is simple but well worked out. The hate/love relationship between Selleck and Armstrong is the best I've ever seen in a movie. It's almost unbelievable that these two actors went into oblivion. Even the director never made a movie after this one. A very, very underrated movie at IMDb. A crying shame.
Aliens (1986)
Oof, my stomach!
I saw this movie in 86 at a theater with a friend of mine. We went to a lot of movies in those days and afterward we always went for a drink in a pub. Talking about the movie, how bad it was or how good it was. This was one hell of a movie. Someone called it a roller-coaster ride. Yeah, fine. After the movie we went as usual to a pub for a cold beer. We were talking and I drank some beer. Felt a bit strange though. Then I noticed that my stomach felt pretty hard. I realized this movie had made such effect on my stomach that it was complete tense. I've never experienced this before nor later. Need I say more about this movie? Go watch it. No, go and experience it! Nine out of ten easily.
