Andrea (2005)
High-class horror
Andrea is spectacular. A great representation of Dominican cinema. A very well accomplished horror movie with very realistic and convincing scenes that keep you totally immersed. A proudly Dominican masterpiece which adequately portrays our lives in that era. Since it covers topics related to spiritism and witchcraft, the movie has that extra quality about the beyond that fits so right in the horror genre. In short, a true gem of a film, a very valuable and special rarity that has marked the lives of many Dominicans and that people from all over the world can enjoy to learn about the reality of the afterlife in Dominican culture.
Desde la última vez que nos vimos (2023)
Deeply touching and beautiful
This film is phenomenal. The story is shown in a very beautiful and sentimental way. I found it deeply touching because I myself identify with the story in some ways, so this film is then that but expanded. It is also very actual as the production quality as well as the cultural elements of the film makes the story feel very real and relevant to the present day. I loved how poetic many of the conversations went, which makes the whole narrative feel very artful. The acting of the characters is also on point: they're completely submerged into their characters. So the beautiful storytelling accompanied by how relatable the story was makes me love this film. And although the ending was quite sad, it was still rather appropriate for the circumstances. All in all, this is one of the most beautiful gay films I've ever watched in my life.
The X Files (1993)
Profound & entertaining
This show covers very deep existential topics and provides highly accurate references around them, thereby making it clear that this is not just pure nonsense but rather real epistemological dilemmas. I love the old-vibes elegance of the scenes and the commitment of Mulder to his visions (I actually identify a lot with him personally). Sculley shows remarkable eloquence & elegance, and diligently proposes highly-intellectual counterarguments to Mulder founded in conventional scientific views. The visuals were also quite realistic and impressive, which I think is notable for such an old show. That being said, some episodes felt boring and chaotic and the ending was quite uneventful.
