Frozen II (2019)
Beautiful but unintelligent
Nice animation but utterly lacking. You get zero answers at the end with everything rushed. I also dislike the notion that Elsa has to be the "protector of the forest". even though her mother is from there, she is not - at the end it still feels all too similar to the colonialist narrative. What does the forest need protecting from... who is that random magical horse.. why does Kristof feel the need to propose.. why does the younger version of their mother so different from their mother - in personality and in terms of looks ... why is Anna so attached to Elsa and so insecure in her relationship with Kristoff. CHEESY.witless. Overly simplistic in all the wrong ways - and too dense in terms of the plot. Songs are really painful to sit through. All the stars go to animation, and that's it.
Wo hu cang long (2000)
Absolutely Stunning
Breathtaking work of art, poetic and exciting at the same time. Must see!
Late Night (2019)
light and enjoyable, with one big problem
I enjoyed the movie - light and flows well, with good acting (mostly).
I do have an issue with the ending - big one. ... Why must Molly be dating a coworker? Why can't they just be good friends? Why not take this opportunity to break the cliche- and the norm- that any deep 1:1 relationship between male and female coworkers of the same age can only be romantic? Why can't women be portrayed as being absolute professionals who just do their damn work at their job? This not only deflates the movie down to a "rom com", but also negates all the good feminist rhetoric building up to the end. Bad aftertaste.
Fifty Shades Darker (2017)
Sexist, Not Sexy!!! ("Boo", *throws food at the screen*)
What a waste of time this was - not just for me, the viewer, but for everyone involved. Honestly if you want to watch a dark and faintly steamy movie, just watch Twilight like all the other emo teens - it's also set in Seattle.
This movie did get my heart rate up at times- not from being excited or turned on, no. It was bc of pure anger.
***The point that got me FUMING was when, the night of being sexually assaulted at work, Ana's sipping wine in a cuddly bathrobe, not at all distressed or worried about what happened/her job LIKE WOMEN IN REAL LIFE WOULD. (she mentions wanting to work, breezily) How disrespectful of the writers/directors to all the women out there who've been through this and all the girls out there who one day will experience it. In the real world, WOMEN deal with $h!t, not their unicorn boyfriends - (who, for the record, stalked and pursued Ana AGAINST HER WILL until she was like 'fine ok'). It's one thing to be Hollywood-fairytale-esque, another to be offensive to all women who have to deal with patriarchal BS like sexual assault at work (often by themselves) and move on with their lives. #TimesUp
