Promising Young Woman (2020)
So many great movies get ruined at the end...
And unfortunately this is one of them. There's three earlier points this movie could have ended and it would have been amazing, but the last half hour or so was just predictable, boring and sad. Such a shame.
Ingrid Goes West (2017)
Surprisingly deep
Was expecting a light comedy romp, but it actually got really damn dark. Intense and actually really good.
Aubrey always works well in these quirky roles and Elizabeth Olsen is actually super believable in her role as well.
Unique story and quite real. Loved it!
My Dad's Christmas Date (2020)
Mediocre, but okay to watch
Definitely not a romcom, which the title does hint at. It was okay, Jeremy Piven is great, but feels a bit out of place. Oliva-Mai wasn't bad, but I felt her character was very badly written.
The actual plot is just too farfetched, it could happen if the girl was a lot younger, but as she's 16, the immersion isn't there, which prevents the really emotional moments from having the same impact.
The movie seems confused at what it is, is it a Christmas Romcom as the title and main plot suggests, a coming of age story as the subplot (with a very odd conclusion) suggests, or is it a drama about a family tragedy?
Because of this, neither the comedy or the drama quite hit home, and it's too bad, as there's definitely potential.
The Descent (2005)
Overuse of jumpscares, underuse of character
The main characters are bland and interchangeable, at the end we questioned who it was in the final scene.
The only bit of character development at the beginning was pointless as it served no purpose for the further plot.
Added to that, there were just a lot of 'jumpscares' that weren't even scary as they became utterly predictable.
The accents were a mess too, sounded like Dutch people trying to be Irish or vice versa, I don't know. Utterly disappointing.
Je ne suis pas un homme facile (2018)
A great movie with a terrible ending
Honestly, this movie was thought-provoking all the way around, but I've never seen a movie with such an unsatisfactory ending. Honestly, it ruined the movie for me, way too abrupt.
The Good Place (2016)
Wow
This show, honestly, wow. This whole journey, it is the best and most perfect show I've ever watched and it fundamentally changed my outlook on life.
Art is there to affect you, this does that while entertaining, confusing and devastating you on the way.
Beautiful, a masterpiece.
The Art of Getting By (2011)
Huge spoiler alert!! Cliché ending for surprisingly good film
This is a typical example of a film suffering for not daring to take a risk. The mature ending of this will they/won't they teen-drama would clearly have been George's realization that he could actually influence the world without getting exactly what he wants.
Sally should have gone off to Europe, George should have painted something abstract and they both could have led very happy lives.
The writers, however, decide to take the well-tread road of dull mediocrity and end the film with a very corny hand-holding scene, forever cementing its place as yet another forgettable run-of-the- mill teenage romance flick.
Which wouldn't be too bad, if the rest of the film didn't actually have potential. If the ending would have been dealt with more thought and realism, it would actually be a good film. I really enjoyed 90% of the film, too bad about the aftertaste.
