Play for Today: Even Solomon (1979)
A DVD .... yes please !
Aaah...there used to be some wonderful dramas on 'Play for Today.' I remember seeing 'Even Solomon' back in 1979. I knew little or nothing about trans-gendered individuals and it was unusual for the subject to be portrayed on TV at that time - society wasn't nearly so open and upfront as it is now about such issues. A beautiful and sympathetically written drama and I found myself rooting for the main character all the way through - I wanted him to beat the bullies and stand his ground, and I've never forgotten the brilliant scene in the bank towards the end when he finally does. It would be great see it again and I don't know why the BBC haven't released some of these vintage plays on DVD. Maybe one day...
Un amour à taire (2005)
A must-see movie
I caught this movie by accident when I was channel surfing one night on cable and happened to land on TV5. Although I don't speak anything other than basic French, the opening scene caught my attention and I ended up sitting through the whole film. It's a tribute to how good it is that even with basic French vocabulary, I was able to follow the story - and what a story it is. An absolute treasure of a film, and I am amazed it hasn't been more widely publicised or shown on mainstream TV over here in the UK. Not an easy film to watch as there are some very brutal scenes, but I recommend it highly. And I would definitely advise a box of tissues to be kept at hand - there are moments that will break your heart.
