Jarring miscasts
The story started off intriguing and well-acted and devolved into a omg, what happened. Why would directors put obviously Caucasian and/or unimpressive actors in this film? It totally ruined the atmosphere. The story itself is interesting. This needs a serious remake with better actors and proper casts, mostly in the last half.

Ending seems appropriate to me.
This show was a gem. While not perfect, it is the most rewatchable show ever in my opinion, more so than Nirvana in Fire and Condor Heroes Trilogy , even more so than GOT and Lord of the Rings.
It is sad to see so many people who love this series give it a bad rating just because of the ending. I think they just don't understand the Feng Zhiwei character in this series.
Zhiwei is someone who refused to marry a prince because of the royalties' reputation of not valueing common peoples' lives. She made Princess Shaoning apologize to the young stableman. For Zhiwei, no ones life is more valuable than another. When she found out that she was the remnant, she felt she should have died. She felt unworthy of their sacrifices. She said their sacrifices weighed down on her and made it difficult to breath. Each and every life sacrificed for her was like a dagger stabbing her heart.
Imagine living with this guilt the rest of your life? Imagine not knowing when the next schemer will use her to kill more innocent people. Even King Helian Zheng, who was a neutral party in the conflict between Tiansheng and Dacheng was pulled into the fight and killed. Most likely anyone close to her would eventually be used and sacrificed. That is a scary prospect that has come true too many times already. That is what she fears the most. And just as the old emperor said, that will make Ning Yi's reign difficult too.
She has shown many times that she is ready to sacrifice her life. When Ning Yi wanted her to blame him to escape the death punishment for lying to the emperor by cross dressing, she refused and said betraying him was a fate worse than death. When she was in Puyuan, she told Hua Qiong to kill her if necessary. When Princess Shaoning forced her to poison Ning Yi, she tried to take the poison instead. These examples show that Zhiwei would rather die than hurt others. Once you understand this about Zhiwei, it becomes easy to believe that she could commit suicide.

A new level of storytelling
This series really transcends every other story. It raises storytelling to a whole new level. The love many of these characters have are not the typical selfish love of one person, but a selfless self-sacrificing love for country and friends.
Many compare this to the Count of Monte Cristo, calling this a revenge story. They are all wrong. Shu Zhe could have easily killed each and everyone of his enemies, but he doesn't do so. He has even saved the emperor and Xie Yu. What he wants is not selfish, feelgood, revenge; he just wants to clear the names of the deceased, so they can rest in peace.
People have also compared this to the Game of Thrones. It couldn't be any different. I wouldn't want any young child watching GOT, but I think many parents will gladly show this to their children (maybe skip the few war scenes) hoping they are old enough to understand and appreciate it.
It will be a long time before any series come close to this masterpiece, if ever.
