Christina in the Country (2023)
Coastal in Tennessee
There was no need to create a new show with a new name as this interior is identical to her previous remodels. I'm actually a fan of her style, but I expected this show to be, I don't know, a country version as the name suggests. After watching the first episode, I feel so bad for the homeowners spending all of that money just to have a house that looks like the Serena & Lily catalogue threw up in it, perhaps because it did in every way and while coastal style fans will love it, not one thing about it looks country.
Even worse, the interior now badly clashes with the exterior architecture (with the exception of a couple lights and the bathtub.) That decision is really going to hurt their potential resale market because most people who will like the colonial exterior in a Tennessee home are not looking for California modern interiors and conversely those looking for a modern coastal interior aren't looking for a house with colonial architecture. Seagrass shows up in styling everywhere, just like in Tennessee right? It's even worse that it's their family and the hubby/brother is a real estate agent whose opinions weren't factored in at all (and the only one we see is on point about the flooring being too coastal.) It's a good thing it's their dream home, there's no way they'll recoup the investment in that style of home (like they might in a house with modern architecture or if they chose a more appropriate wood tone.)
The last thing was clearly there was no budget because there's a lot of wasteful design choices especially the unnecessary wall of tile. The husband tried to voice his comfortable budget and as a designer I cannot believe how little she listened to her clients, just blowing right past that and not even indicating on camera how much it cost is terrible, and also terrible for the producers to do. I realize perhaps they want to showcase a transition in her style from California to country but this feels like a joke. Maybe off camera the wife said she wanted a California modern interior with lots of Coastal, but still the interior designer should really work with them to help them understand the potential problems with doing that. Hopefully future episodes feature forceful clients who won't let her do this again, but for now it's barely watchable for me and I am a fan of her style and her other show so it's an extra let down.
Mammals (2022)
It's Absurd. But I think that's the point.
If you watch this and fail to notice the absurdities large and small throughout, then you're not paying attention. It presents love and fidelity in the most absurd way, which is definitely something different to the usual dramedy.
My main critique is it's a huge let down on the quantity of comedy (maybe because your brain is trying to reason through the absurdity and misses some along the way.) Large portions essentially felt like all of it was written by Corden or at the very least in his comedic voice. Which I guess would be fine if he wasn't so well known for that style on a late night chat show nowadays, it takes you out of the character in several moments.
Somewhat predictable plot, but then again it was marketed as a romantic comedy and not this absurd dramedy that it really is, so I'd expect a lot of annoyance and confusion over that, including the casting choices. But ask yourself if you can think of anyone more absurd for this role than Corden.
Welcome to Wrexham (2022)
I'm no sports fan, but I couldn't love this show more
I have a hard time watching most sports, mainly the ones with a lot of breaks in play, time outs, etc. That's why I find soccer (football) the least painful to watch and by the end of this series I was genuinely enjoying watching the sport. I seems all it takes for me to enjoy watching sports is a dose of comedy and some great storytelling. Of course, it all started with Ted Lasso and falling in love with the characters, the stories, the wins and losses, the joys and heartbreaks. That's what got me to watch the first episode of Welcome to Wrexham, and I am so glad I did because by the end of it, I was hooked. Was I shouting at the screen on episode 3 about how they need to hire a team psychologist? Yes. Is it self indulgent? Of course, it involves Ryan Reynolds. Few series (and serial documentaries) have it all, but this made me laugh and love and cry without fail each and every episode and I cannot wait for more.
The format is great fun as well, with each episode taking a slightly different angle or spin on the game. Since I didn't know what was coming, I kept finding Welcome to Wrexham would often win out over things like See, House of Dragons, or even Andor. I kept getting a rush of joy and anticipation when starting a new episode wondering what it will be about and knowing I would love it no matter what happened. I could watch this show for as long as they own the club, regardless of how their standings go because I'm now attached to the people in the town and their love of the club really comes through the screen. I don't really write these reviews but for someone who hates watching sports, I just loved watching this.
