Deadstream (2022)
Best of horror-comedy found-footage
The balance between comedy and horror is just perfect! I very rarely enjoy this subgenre, and still, this is an amazing example of what can be achieved if done correctly. The references are clever, as the critique of the cliches also is. Moreover, the jump scares and special effects are amazing and thrillingly fun! The approach to how far an online persona can go to stay relevant and earn money fits the story really well and is an ever-important reminder of boundaries and limits when it comes to putting oneself at risk and also respecting others.
I can only hope they make a kind of sequel some day, with the same creative plot and rhythm.
The Fear Footage: 3AM (2021)
Subniche-specific gem in a good series
If you expect a high-profile, superbly produced film, then this is definitely not for you. However, "Blair Witch (2016)" cost millions and it still got dragged by critics, so I am not entirely sure what it is that some people demand from found-footage anyway.
Is there a character in this movie filming his journey even after he definitely would have dropped his cam and stopped recording? Yes. Are there Blair Witchy cliches and an abundance of "hellos" and jump scares? Yes. Is there an overused type of plot and style all throughout? Yes. Is it still fun as hell and does it deliver what fans of the subgenre actually want? BIG YES!
So, as far as I am concerned, they can carry on and make numbers 4, 5, 6 and so on, as long as they maintain this level of production.
Archive 81 (2022)
We NEED a Season 2!
This is one of the most original content Netflix has presented us with; the mix of traditional and found footage style plus the atmosphere of mystery of the whole show and the utterly chartismatic characters that just win you over.
It's outrageous that, despite it gathering a big number of followers and being in the TOP 10 of the platform during January in a lot of countries, Archive 81 got axed after just one season! It makes no sense and they didn't provide any reasonable explanation.
The podcast it drew inspiration from is amazing and there would be so much great stuff to explore in a second season...
What angers me most is that Netflix is always pulling forward so many cr*p shows and yet this incredible production got cancelled.
Hell House LLC (2015)
Amazing found footage with great actors
Being a found footage lover, I was puzzled to discover this title just yesterday, as it is very rarely that a subgenre flick goes through my radar unnoticed. And what a great surprise! I absolutely LOVED it! The story is an original take on ff, and it totally made me feel like I was watching what "The Houses October Built" should have been - or, at least, what I had hoped it to be before actually checking it out - and it had me hooked from the very beginning. They really knew what they were doing with this one: the use of various sources to add up bits of information progressively was very smart, as it kept things interesting and evolving all the time. The different footage from various people reminded me of how "The Blair Witch Project" built up the suspense regarding the mystery from many interviews, making the story decentralized and, therefore, with a more realistic feel to it. Also, the basement was an instant TBWP kind of homage. And it does not stop there: I feel like the script was so good and made use of the material in such a way that there was nothing more I could expect from the movie when it ended. And, ultimately, that is what I want from a movie, to be fully entertained. I even felt the urge to go online and search the history of the Abaddon hotel, and I really wish that, as with TBWP, there was fictional material online to expand on the movie's plot. And this is one of the very few ff movies to feature so many hot guys - I tried not to, but I had to point that out.
Dark Signal (2016)
Flawed thriller worth for its atmosphere and tone
First of all, the script is what really makes this movie. But it is also the one thing that, for me, stops it from getting a maximum rating. It has got some script flaws, such as: why did Sarah's ghost attack and make contact with everyone but her killer? Why did she wait so long and let so many people get killed before finally taking her revenge on the killer? Why did Ben decide to not kill Kate's son in front of her, as promised? Although the kid was locked in that small room, Ben had the time to easily burst the door and get him! Aside from these plot holes, the other two things that bothered me were: the entire thing with Kate's leg and her managing to walk, drive, run and fight; and her fearless reaction after being attacked by Sarah's ghost, plus still being willing to venture into the dark house alone, after hearing through the phone that Nick had been attacked. Do not let the cover scare you away; it is not a trashy flick full of terrible special effects and jump scares, as pretty much every thriller released in 2016. It has got some really decent effects and - surprise - it does not rely entirely on them, as the story mixes supernatural with the murders of a serial killer. The thing is: not everything goes as you would expect, for the rhythm is slow - it falls far from its subgenre tree, being completely different from similar themed movies. People will dislike it for not being what it "could have been". All things considered, it still is a very good thriller, that will probably be criticized for being so unique. But that is exactly why I enjoyed it so much. The atmosphere remained the same, even when we shifted from the dark road in the woods to the light radio station, or from Karen's son's darkened room to the farmhouse. The quiet and obscure tone is impeccable, thus making "Dark Signal" a very distinctive thriller. Besides, you will not want to miss catching the performances from Katy Perry's sister and Anna Farris's sister!
Haunted (2013)
Terrible
If you like to see a bunch of people talking non-stop with British accent, then you might consider watching this. Nothing paranormal happens at all; the few things which are "supposed" to be paranormal are so hilarious that you'll just keep laughing. Plus, there's a fat guy in blue who is sooooo annoying! He can't stop talking for one second.
It upsets me how some people get funds and good locations to shoot - like this train station/museum - and are able to completely waste it all! Bad acting, poor - very, very, very poor - script and terrible visual/sound effects. If anything, "The Blair Witch Project" taught us that it isn't necessary to have lots of money, lots of actors nor effects to create an amazing atmosphere with a great story and growing suspense.
