Reba (2001)
Only 1 character I found likeable
Too many of the characters are not the kind of people you'd want as a friend or neighbor. Melissa Peterman is the only one worth watching. She delivers her absurd portrayal as Barbara Jean perfectly. Reba (the character) is just a horrible person. She's loud, overbearing, nosy and mean most of the time. Her ex is as cheesy as can be. He leaves his wife and kids (and after seeing what she was all about) who can blame him? Why he is constantly over her house to be the butt of her jokes and seething resentment towards him is beyond me. Van is a buffoon and after seeing him on shameless it's not too much of a stretch from his real personality. His wife is pretty enough for some needed eye candy and the young son is pretty robotic in his expression and line delivery. The middle daughter is just as horrible a person as her mother. No doubt Reba's mom wished a daughter on her as she must have been growing up. Too many miserable manipulative people in this cast of characters. If you haven't encountered enough miserable people in your life this show just might fill that gap for you.....
I Love Lucy: First Stop (1955)
Ohio never looked so bad, but funny
A classic episode with a lot of laughs. The foursome have to settle for a cabin in "Lower Slobovia" which couldn't be any closer to a freight train track unless it was sitting on the tracks itself. Stale cheese sandwiches, horrible sleeping arrangements and a stolen steering wheel all add up to terrible first stop but hysterical dialogue between the group. Ethel coming out of the bathroom with toothpaste over her eye and cheeks, Fred mumbling the "baby dear" song upon leaving the rundown cafe and then stating he felt like he was "breaking out of prison" when the search lights and sirens go off when they try to sneak out without paying in the middle of the night. I guess there's no way of adding to the "goofs" section but clearly this couldn't have (realistically) been their first stop. They left Manhattan at approximately 6pm (as per Fred's comment when they were finally starting on their way). From Manhattan to near Cincinnati would take over 9 1/2 hours on the current highways you'd use. For them to arrive anywhere near Cincinnati for the first stop would mean an arrival time at around 4:00 am without any stops!
I Love Lucy: Lucy Gets Chummy with the Neighbors (1957)
New Furniture (again)
The basis of this episode is a recycled one as Lucy has had more new furniture/redecorating episodes than most other shows. So the concept isn't new but it still has some truly funny parts. My problem is that during the initial conversation with her new neighbor (Betty Ramsey) Lucy initially wants to keep some of the old pieces of furniture and instead of explaining why she HAS to keep it she goes along with her neighbors advice. While setting up the deal with a furniture dealer, Betty states that she can save her 40% off retail and that trading in the old furniture would save her even more money. If Betty believed that money was of no object, what was with all the "savings" about? Since Lucy was getting a deal, why wouldn't she just say that she was on a budget? Smh...
I Love Lucy: The Fur Coat (1951)
Lucy being horrible
I'd like to say parts of this episode were okay but for the most part it isn't. The real burglar in the apartment and Lucy's refusal to take off the mink even when he threatened to shoot her (she lifts the coat up so not to ruin it, that was funny) and Fred is always good for a laugh but the whole storyline is just bad. Now for the parts that really stinks. Lucy jumps to the conclusion that the coat is for her and can't shut up for a minute to let Ricky explain that it's not. When Ethel tells her the truth she gets obsessed with retaliating against her husband...for what? What exactly is she mad about? It's not like he tried to fool her by buying her the imitation. And on top of it all she gets gifted a new wardrobe and it isn't even her anniversary! Another review called her a brat and I agree completely.
