Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)
Car chases and stunts.
Nope. Just didn't do it this time. Really, a two part key that seemed to be everywhere all at once and yet no one seemed to know what to do with it. Car chase after motorcycle chase after train crash. For many people it's what they come for. If that's you, you'll love it but if you'd like some kind of a story, stay home. The rambling on about the entity, the missing key parts, etc became as tedious as the car chases. And I love Tom but the latest face lift makes him look strained. Or maybe he is strained after all these years of this franchise.
I can't recommend this. I left for 15 minutes to get a break and nothing happened while I was gone. You've been warned.
Licorice Pizza (2021)
Oh come on
What a pretentious muddled mess. I stayed to the end in hopes it redeemed itself since the reviews seemed so good. Nope. The ending was even worse. Mostly there was a lot of running. Even flashbacks of running while running. Very unsatisfying movie. Avoid.
Plastic China (2016)
Ver slow and repetitive
It would make a good 30 minute doc but what he has here is repetitive. It's a sad, interesting story but by the 30 minute mark you get the tragedy, the hopelessness. how long can you watch people sort and refine plastic? I would not recommend this doc. It was torture to watch in many ways.
A Star Is Born (2018)
Oh dear. Not much to see.
It's hard to choose the worst thing about the movie but perhaps editing wins the raspberry. There is a black guy and family who appear in one scene out of nowhere, are apparently long time best friends, say a few heartful words, never to appear again. Weird. Throughout you often wonder where you were, what house, what state, what universe. Gaga is not a great actress, the songs were forgettable, Gaga even seemed weak in the upper register when she sang, and the story was such a cliche. Even if you've seen the other movies this one plot-wise was weak. Just a poorly made movie.
The Edge of Seventeen (2016)
Excellent script. Outstanding acting.
Hailee Steinfeld is someone to watch for. I think this was Oscar quality acting. Woody Harrelson was charming in a small role. The writing was unique and original. Every time you were sure what would happen, it didn't, and a whole new twist was created. There was only one weak spot for me, when she met the bad boy, but we needed a villain to keep the movie rolling so it did it's job. Steinfeld's character was charming, confused, but underneath it all mature with great common sense. Lots of humor that generally came as a surprise. Showing teenagers as thinking beings was an interesting take as well. It doesn't happen in too many of the movies. Kyra Sedgwick played an excellent single mother of two teenagers - angst and understanding at the same time. She was never a cardboard cutout which you could either love or dislike. You had to do both at different times.
