A Murder at the End of the World (2023)
I really wanted to like it.
I was recommended this by a friend so I got in with a really positive attitude.
It started out with only one red flag: everyone was cool and special like in a YA thing. There wasn't a one real person in sight. But I told myself I'm being negative and that I should just try and enjoy myself. But then the murder happened and I was hooked - I needed to get the answers so I knew I had to finish this.
And to get the answers I had to sit through hours of the worst writing I've seen in a long time, annoying, childish dialogue, bad acting and constant overdubs that made the acting even worse. The plot is really stupid, the characters are unlikeable, and most dialogue is infuriating.
After watching this I don't feel like I was given something, I feel like something has been taken from me. I feel tired and empty. I have this "is that all there is to life" sad feeling.
Vesper (2022)
A beautiful movie but not a great story.
If you go into this expecting a great narrative, you will be fairly disappointed. The story is a bit basic, not that well written and will drag at times. Also, there are about two or three scenes that will really make you roll your eyes. However, I still give this movie a high score, as it is stunningly beautiful. It is really worth seeing for its worldbuilding, cinematography and style. The performances are also quite good so it's possible to get really engaged in the movie, especially in the first half. However, the payoff of the story and the reveal of an important mystery may leave you disappointed, maybe even a bit angry. Watch it like a very long music video and you'll be ok.
The Battery (2012)
A great movie for... no one
This is a warm and fuzzy, beautifully shot road film. My wife should definitely watch it but she will never do that as it has zombies. Zombie fans on the other hand will be immensely disappointed, as the movie focuses more on this weird friendship and it's nuances than on the survival part of the apocalypse. I loved it though. Having said that, it's not a movie for everyone. Maybe it's not for anyone? I'm not sure.
Tokyo! (2008)
Almost perfect.
It would've been perfect if it wasn't for the unnecessary (but still kind of cool in it's own way) Leos Carax segment. Like Holy Motors after that, it is it's own thing, it's worth watching but it kind of destroys the mood set with the Gondry and Bong Joon Ho segments. Then again, this is just my personal opinion, check it out for yourself.
Tau (2018)
Actual money has been spent...
...on the production of this dumb piece of %#@&. Money that could have been better used to do ANYTHING else. Except for beautiful cinematography and nice cgi, this movie is extremely badly written, it insults the viewer's intelligence with almost every idea. Watch it only if your desperately bored, but be warned, you will be rolling your eyes a lot.
The 100 (2014)
Very bad but strangely entertaining
This is probably one of the insultingly stupid things I have seen in years, to such an extent that I imagine the writers laughing out loud while doing their work. The plot is a mix of inconsistent elements borrowed from everything popular in the last decade, the most obvious clichés from the genre, absolutely over the top drama, generic moral dilemmas and of course 'young adult' romance we couldn't get enough of. All that is topped with unstable characters completely shifting personalities from one episode to another (others on the other hand will be stable to the point they will only actually repeat similar lines throughout the season) and dialogues that will make you cry / laugh, depending on how you deal with awkwardness. The actors do their job, I guess, however I was under the impression that casting was based on general appearance because almost everyone in 'The 100' is very, very pretty. Plus, I guess, every actor performs better with good direction, so there you go... My review, however, makes me a hypocrite - I hated myself for it but couldn't stop watching for at least two seasons. Maybe it's because I was bored out of my mind and needed something at least a bit sci- fi-ish, but after all, I did end up watching about thirty episodes, so there must have been something to it. I guess the story is interesting in general and the whole thing follows basic principles of what an entertaining show should look like, so... if you're down with flu and have absolutely nothing else to watch, you may give this series a shot.
