What's not to love?
12 July 2023
For the missing part from my 1968 heart. I do sure love watching two stars from Oscar winning movies stretching their talents in new film genres.

I saw this in 1968,l. Having parents that as long as I took my 4yo brother with me, could go to a movie every night. I became a connoisseur of AIP and Hammer movies.

There weren't ratings yet, watched Rosemary's Baby alone at 12 yo, Night of the Living Dead and at a midnight sneak with myself a 13 yo and my sisters (only girls in the joint) in a rowdy audience of airmen, flying or servicing the the B52s taking off heavy and landing light after doing their 8,000 mile round trip across the South Pacific.

If you haven't guessed, I'm 13yo, while living in Guam 🇬🇺 as an Air Force dependent. Nothing like watching an AIP teen movie to take your mind off the current news of the day.

You need to watch all Val Lewton films you can lay your hands on
1 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Very atmospheric. WhenBetsy first arrives on the island, she wailing and sobs and asks why, she informed a baby had just been born. The wails are for the tribulations it will encounter throughout their in life, it dies, there is much jubilation for they are now going to the Lord. The Voodoo scene are too hard to describe, it's very chilling. A Do Not Miss Movie.

I submit VERY FEW reviews but I felt I just had to rate this movie. Of the 14 films Mr. Lewton was the producer on, 9 are outright classics. He had 3 rules that he had to follow. The films had to be 90m or less, cost no more than $200,000 and use the title he's given. Other that that, he could plot and film whatever he wanted. He promoted directors yet to come into their own. Jacques Tourneur, 28 films under his belt, only 4 feature length. And first time directors, Robert Wise (The Day the Earth Stood Still, West Side Story, Sound of Music) and Mark Robeson (The Harder They Fall, Peyton Place, From the Terrace). Started their long careers.

What Ridiculousness Is This?
5 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I'm having a very hard time to find a better way to critique this tableau of series moving pictures. I say a series of connected pictures because do not consider this neither a movie nor a film, lest you consider 'film' as in smutch, an example smutch, that which you find on your glasses lenses that befogs and distorts your vision. If that is your definition smutch, then we agree, upon viewing this, it will undoubtedly befog a distort any kind of rational thought. Otherwise I associate movies and/or films be for entertainment or for the dissemination of thoughtful, well reasoned, and scrupulously fact checked documentaries. I have found this moving picture wanting in all categories. It is mired in the muddy moors of innuendo that cannot stand up to the scrutiny of even most innocuous of questions. For example, when Ret. Army General Michael Flynn is asked if believers in the peaceful transfer of power from one president to another, he is unwilling to answer, thus invoking his 5th amendment right not to answer because he could incriminate himself ... from WHAT??? Thus all I can say is What. Ridiculousness. Is. This??!!!!

The Bad Seed (2018 TV Movie)
9/10
I'm surprised I liked this as much as much as I did.
8 January 2022
From the previous comments below pertaining to how the ending ruined it, in the original Broadway play version of The Bad Seed, Rhoda lives and mom dies from her self-inflicted gunshot. As much as this Bad Seed ends, Rhoda/Emma embraces her dad/aunt knowing she got away with it all. The ending was changed for the movie production code. The end scene with the credits where Rhoda gets spanked was to assure the movie audience that this was just a movie and being bad, even make-believe, you still get punished. That said, this version adheres more true to the original play, also with Patty McCormack and much of the original Broadway cast

In 1995, Patty McCormack made kinda a sequel called Mommy. Just like this version, it uses some of the same tropes from the original. If you can find. It's a hoot. Known only as Mommy, Patty basically plays Rhonda all grown up, just as bad she ever was. Her daughter is neurotically nervous, much like her mom in the original film. Look for it.

There's even a sequel to that, Mommy's Day, 1997. Since I have seen it, it's hard to think it can surpass the wonderfulness of Mommy. Who knows? I'm still trying to track it down.

Mckenna Grace is a standout as Emma. I'm not trying to be provocative or sacrilegious by saying, as Emma, she was almost as scary Patty McCormack was as Rhoda.

This version is miles ahead of the 1985 TV movie. Blair Brown as mom and Christa Denton as Rachel are a very poor substitute for the real thing.

Two Months Too Late
9 January 2020
This film was released 2 months too late. The code went into effect 1 July 1934. I'm sure there was footage of a more frank version, i.e. a more faithful to the book, than was ultimately released 6 August 1934. As it is, Mr. Whale did more than adequate with what he could release. My regret is, if there was more footage, it was was relegated to the dustbin of history long ago. The only saving grace is this wasn't an MGM movie. Not to speak ill of the dead, Mayer's heavy hand would have never considered optioning the book in the 1st place. I would rate this 10 out of 10 (5 out of 5? ... whatever) because Claire didn't want to reveal the full extent of Sir Gerald's abuse, not wanting to damage his career (!?), when he had no compunction of dragging her name in the mud. I don't know if this was faithful to the book or a nod to current mores (?) of the day. I very much, enjoyed 'One More River',

Never doubt Nigel Tufnel
23 September 2019
I originally saw this in 2014. I was turned into it by text buddy. She in Oakland, me in Seattle. We watched it semi-simultaneously. I have since rewatched both seasons twice more.

There have been many shows where the last episode is felt a letdown by, not just fans, but roadside rubberneckers who suffers from fom. They have no skin in the game.

While not every episodes rated a 10, but none lower than an 8.

I always cry at the last episode; for one, knowing it's over, for two, how perfectly it wraps it all up.

What makes this an 11 is the last episode (it deserves more). I cannot think of a series that has a more satisfying last episode.

"What is THIS?" "What IS this? College boy.... This is IT!"
29 April 2016
I saw this at at a midnight secret sneak during the 3rd Seattle International Film Festival (2016 - 42nd year). Although I only saw it the one time, I was mesmerized!

It's odd that a film as good as this from a director of such caliber has never been shown. I didn't know anything about the movie when I went in. By the time it was over, I was exhausted!

I can't exactly explain to you anything about this movie as it's been 40 years but what I saw still haunts me!

This is the greatest the dance finale from one of the greatest movies that almost on one has ever seen. I almost came to tears when I finally saw it today on YouTube.
