Locke (2013)
It's all about the acting
This movie is formed by the excellent Tom Hardy performance. It's that good. I would put it up there with Gregory Peck in To Kill a Mocking Bird, and Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs. Okay, now I think you understand how good I think Hardy does. The movie seems boring from a simple summary. "It's about a guy taking phone calls in his car for almost 90 minutes". That sounds boring, but it's not. It's actually the most suspenseful movie of the year. (2014, it came out in the US in 2014). Sounds impossible, but writer/director Steven Knight does amazing with a tiny budget. You also get to know, not only Hardy's character, but the people he's talking to on the phone as well. They truly seem like real people. The situation they create is also very creative and interesting. I won't say what it is, but I don't think it's a spoiler. I'll just say it makes you wonder what you'd do in the given situation. It's the best British film I've seen since Trainspotting, and definitely deserves one, if not more, viewings.
A Clockwork Orange (1971)
My favorite movie of all time
My favorite director of all time, Stanley Kubrick, creates my favorite movie of all time, in A Clockwork Orange. It's grim, it's darkly humorous, it's disturbing, and it's brilliant. The film follows Alex, a psychopathic teenager, and pretty much the worse person to ever exist, played by Malcolm McDowell. This movie is truly a once in a lifetime experience, and needs to be had by everybody. There's just nothing bad about it, it's as perfect as you can get, and on top of that it's terrifying. The Beethoven music, and the cinematography are characters of their own, they just add so much to an already near perfect film. It's Kubrick's best in my opinion, and the best movie ever made.
Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)
Best movie of the year
This my favorite movie of the year, with the best performance of the year, and honestly, it would be pretty close to the top in a favorite movies of the 21st century. Yes, it is that good. You probably already know the premise of it, so I won't go over that again for you. But, let me go over the things I love about this film. Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu does excellent at direction. The feeling that it is all one shot really works. You might think it would be exhausting, but it's really not. Michael Keaton does amazing, of course. One of my favorite actors of all time, Edward Norton, also does amazing. The rest of the ensemble cast is excellent as well. It might be a little weird, but just adds to how much I like it. It's an amazing black comedy, and if you haven't seen it you should.
Trainspotting (1996)
One of my favorite movies of all time
I just saw this movie after almost twenty years, and not only did it immediately become my favorite Danny Boyle film, but it also became one of my favorite movies of all time. The film follows a group of friends that are heroin addicts, and love to break the law in various ways. It's a very dark comedy, and has an excellent performance from Ewan McGregor as the main character, Mark. My favorite part of the movie was the characters, by far. They are just so interesting, especially Mark. His philosophy, though very disagreeable, is very intriguing. I absolutely love the ending. I suppose the worst part of it for me is the story. It's good, but it wouldn't work without the excellent performances. Also, the Scottish accent is a little distracting, but that is more of a nitpick. In the end, this is a great movie, and deserves a lot more attention.
