Velma (2023)
Zoiks!
First of all, I'm a massive fan of Harley Quinn and Archer, so I love a good adult animated comedy. Secondly, I really like the diversity changes that they made, so I gave it a couple stars for that. The animation art is also really nice, and you can't beat the killer cast.
That said, this is a terrible show. I fully watched the first 2 episodes (all that have been released at this time) and I found the humor more self-indulgent than self-aware and mostly not funny or too on-the-nose to be very amusing. For instance, we all know Shaggy is a stoner, but the show reminds us of it every single time he's on the screen, and he never actually seems stoned or even chill. He actually seems kind of anxious. Very confusing.
It sounds like it was written by someone my age (47) trying to pretend they're a teenager (which it is). It gives the whole thing a sad vibe. The raunchy jokes are rarely funny and considering these are teenagers, it's just uncomfortable. I know Scooby-doo is all about "those meddling kids," but I wish they'd set this in college instead of high school. I think that would have made the show different enough from the original to give it a fresh spin AND allow for sex/nudity without giving it a gross vibe.
The thing that makes Harley Quinn particularly fun to watch, imo, is that there's a light-hearted positive vibe to the whole thing. Most of the jokes are goofy, paced well, and usually stick the landing. Velma feels very negative at its core and the humor feels forced.
Blockbuster (2022)
Yikes
I rarely notice the writing of a show, and I'm not that picky, but this show is terribly written. I'm watching episode 6 right now and I'm dying. The actors are doing an AMAZING job with what they have--all my 4 stars go to the actors--because no one talks like this, not even in a cheesy sitcom. The writing is awkward and weird with boringly mainstream (yet somehow smug?) pop culture references. I'm pretty sure they're making fun of bipolar mania in this episode with a woman who gets wild when she doesn't sleep. These actors need to be in things that aren't totally horrible because they're all very good and likeable. Too bad they were given trash.
The Rain (2018)
Nothing makes sense but it's still pretty good
I just finished watching all 3 seasons of this. What a wild ride. Mild spoilers incoming:
The science in this show makes NO sense. One drop of rain will kill them but falling onto the wet ground is totally fine. It's never fully explained why the scientists thought putting an untested virus in rain was a good idea, only that they thought it would do good. Eventually the show gives up on science altogether and ventures into the world of magic. So be prepared to push the fairy tale button in your brain and don't question things too much. The end especially makes no sense.
Rasmus (a name you will hear repeated time and time again--I considered starting a drinking game at one point.) gets a lot of ladies despite being like 16-17, and they accentuate his body the whole time with skimpy clothes, so be prepared for that. I was VERY confused about his age for a while until I googled the age of consent in Denmark (15). IRL he was 18 when the show started.
One character has braces and hasn't been to the dentist in 6-7 years! That bothered me a lot lol.
Overall, nothing makes a lot of sense. The characters are both too cautious and not cautious at all. But somehow, I still liked it. I was hooked the whole time and felt satisfied with the end, despite laughing at how goofy it was.
Lez Bomb (2018)
Fun movie
I don't usually review movies, but I watched this and liked it a lot. Since it's such a small film, I figured a review would be beneficial. Although you could consider it a rom com, it's not a film about falling in love, but rather accepting love and being brave and true to yourself. The acting is quite good, the dialogue is snappy, it's well shot, and the events are realistic to the type of family shown in the film. I will definitely be ordering the Blu-Ray when it comes out to add to my too-small collection of actual good lesbian films.
