Alien Abduction (2014)
Bad Bad Bad
One of the worst movies I've seen in a while.
Pathetic acting and pathetic reasoning by the actors due to pathetic writing. Let's hide in another man-made structure because they will never think that we would run from one easily found place to another! Unless of course some douche like Robert Lewis is calling the shots....We can lose them by screaming constantly and waving flashlights around!
I cant write anymore, it's just too painful recollecting every single pathetic minute of that terrible movie.
Do yourselves a favour people, skip this trash and watch paint dry, it will be more exciting.
Jaws (1975)
Why does Hooper not mention finding Ben Gardener's corpse?
When Hooper dives on Ben Gardener's wrecked boat and is investigating the hole/s in the hull, Gardener's corpse floats into view, shocking Hooper into dropping the sharks tooth, as well as his flashlight and diving knife. When Hooper swims back to his own boat he says nothing about the discovery to Chief Brody, nor does he mention the body when arguing with the Mayor about closing the beaches. Surely the fact that the shark has killed yet another person would lend weight to his opinion yet he says nothing about it. Later in the movie it is mentioned that Gardener is still "missing", even if the body floated out of the boat when it was towed in, I imagine that a police forensic examination would conclude that Gardener was killed in the attack on the boat.
Any ideas on this puzzling behaviour?
The Descent (2005)
Do not watch this tripe if you have ANY knowledge of climbing / spelunking
Never never never have I seen a group of spelunkers less suited to this dangerous quasi sport....They lack any of the mental strength required to participate in caving. Oprah Winfrey would make it look easier than these brittle brained try-hards fumbling their way through a paper-mache cavern without the gear needed to make it out alive. Absolutely terrible stuff...It's hard to believe this movie got the good reviews i read that made me watch it. It's not often that instinctual self- preservation will get you into trouble but these hacks manage to do it time after time. Sub-standard writing is an understatement. With their obvious lack of skills and fragile mind-set I am surprised they made it through their first spelunking experience let alone gain the 'experience' they supposedly have.
The Tunnel (2011)
All's well that starts well?
Excellent start to the movie even though I'm sure there are people who would say it was too slow / long, but I believe the story build up and character development was spot on, too many horror films don't allow time for the audience to bond with the characters and allow that essential empathy to grow so you root for them when they're in danger.
Tangles had the Aussie larrikin done effortlessly so even without deep character development he was a likable one.
Nat played the career driven journalist well and her facials were the key to her successful performance. It's not often that an 'unlikable' character can still make you hope they don't die in a horror flick but Nat pulled this off. When she became hysterical and started screaming into the hole below the tunnel street I wanted to reach into the screen and slap her into silence so she didn't bring the Thing down on them. A definite sign of audience immersion.
Peter played the mature 'father' figure well and brought balance to film crew's different personalities with his level headedness. When he was 'taken', it removed the load bearing structure that kept the viewer descending into gibbering terror and recklessness that Nat and Steve's roles kept building the viewer up to. Well done.
Steve. Maaate. Exceptional casting bringing in a fair dinkum cameraman who was blokey and lovable as only a 'non-actor' can be. Steve reminded me a lot of a personal friend who, as fate would have, is a cameraman for Channel Nine. His down to earth and honest characteristics flowed from him and built empathy very well. The 'interview' scenes made you think it was a real documentary which adds depth to any film of the 'found footage' genre. Most actors would not be able to pull this off as even when sleeping, actors snores stink of trope. My hat goes off to you Steve, well played sir.
Excellent production values and professional editing were additional hallmarks in this movie which are sadly lacking in most modern horror movies. Great sound production including the creepy monster growl added to the overall scary aura that the film possessed. I loved it and thought it was a very refreshing horror movie. Props to Carlo Ledesma and Steve Davis in particular. Bravo.
The Rite (2011)
The Rite is worth performing
An excellent and memorable tale. Anthony Hopkins does not disappoint in this gritty recounting of the burden borne by exorcising priests, he displays a battery of personalities all believable in the way that only Hopkins can be comfortable in so many skins. Colin O'Donoghue portrays the hesitant priest well in that he shows the 'prove it then' attitude of youth coupled with determined maturity by a recently experienced epiphany. Musical score was for the most part done very well for the genre where it is barely noticed by being well blended to suit the visual experience. A pity Ciarán Hinds did not play a larger part, but the films purpose was to focus on Teacher, Student and Evil's part in life.
The Mist (2007)
Mr King would bury himself just so he could roll over in his grave.
One of the worst movies I have ever sat through. The only reason I didn't walk out on it was the hope of a redeeming event or unexpected ending. Despite the collection of seasoned actors contained in the cast the performances were generally wooden and uninspired, you can almost see them rehearsing their lines in the seconds before delivery. The pathetic attempts at suspense and the obvious twiddling of thumbs while they wait for the CGI creatures to scuttle to their Mark or get in position to sting or bite made my eyes ache from constantly rolling them in exasperation. The Great Mr King's stories rarely hit the mark in transition to motion pictures and this slop is a prime example. I want my 2 hours of life back please...
