The First Omen (2024)
A bishop, a priest and 3 nuns walk into a bar...
...and they start brainstorming ideas on how to bring people in the church's bosom once again.
"I know! We start revolutionizing the church, be less conservative and more openminded!" says the first.
"How about splitting church and state, bringing more transparency and less scandals?" pitches in the second.
"I have the best idea ever, listen to this" shouts the third in delight. "We're gonna bring the antichrist to earth, terrifying everyone into believing again! We'll create a sect within the catholic church, convince ourselves that we do everything for a higher purpose that will eventually bring us closer to God! The antichrist figure is not at all volatile and uncontrollable by a bunch of clergy with dillusions of grandeur!".
"LET'S GO WITH THAT!" all of them shouted in unison.
Pros: Art-house film with great atmosphere, jumpscares counted in one hand, Myrcella does the best she can with what she's given and the rest deliver decent enough performances.
Cons: The story is laughable with more plot-holes that I can count (what's up with the Jackal? Is he satan in the flesh? Is he a lesser demon? If so, how can the son of the devil come from a mere paper pusher in hell? And why does he burn at the all-so MCU finale? )
Well, is a prequel not thoroughly thought, and a movie no-one needed. And with that script, the moment we learned the backstory of the cult, we lost all interest.
The Zone of Interest (2023)
It should be a short film
The idea is fresh. The approach is new, seeing the extreme dehumanization the characters are going through, living their daily lives right next to the concentration camp. Like a dark cloud hovering above you, the viewer, without actually raining, you hear the terrors happening just a few meters away, but you never see anything. Cries, gunshots, screams, chimneys smoking, soldiers shouting. It's dark, it's profound.
And then? Nothing happens. This new narration of the holocaust is interesting, but is clearly given in the first ten minutes of the film. Plot wise, the story becomes stale, as we see a German family going on and about their daily lives, and the film becoming a complete bore before even the first half an hour passes. Huller does the best she can, grasping tight on her rise to stardom with two much discussed movies in 2023, but it's just not enough.
It shouldn't be a feature film, but a short one. In 20 minutes, it had all the time it needed to convey its themes and messages and would leave the viewer satisfied. Now it overstayed its welcome and doesn't deserve the praise or the hype, even if we consider how the critics go bats about holocaust films even before watching.
The Week Of (2018)
Mind-numbingly boring
There is no bottom for Adam Sandler as it seems. This is the last addition to this ever expanding list of Sandler movies with the same dull jokes, the absolute lack of character and Sandler himself playing the same role again and again yelling his lungs off since "the longest yard". This is the worst subproduct of comedy Hollywood can produce, unfortunately.
Stay away.
Kaena: La prophétie (2003)
Unfortunately too weak
It was this time that digital 3D animation was starting to lure the audiences but was still really scetchy and blunt. I gave it a go for the sake of being the first 3D coming from France. The art was decent and even interesting on the parts concerning the creatures/monsters but the plot was simplistic and bad, making for an overall meh movie that you don't have to bother seeing. Couldn't manage to watch it properly, after 35-40 mins I was too bored and just fast forwarded to see what happens.
Coco (2017)
Shameless rip-off
If this movie was a standalone without book of life coming out 3 years before it, I would talk about a 9/10. But this is a disgusting rip-off to the last detail and on top of that took an Oscar! That happened cause of Disney in the background, fox's Film wasn't even nominated. Such a shame, I feel sorry for the crew behind book of life, I can only imagine how disgusted they felt when this flick came out.
The visuals are stunning though, Pixar really outdid themselves.
DuckTales: The Missing Links of Moorshire! (2018)
It gets worse with every episode
Ok, the last hopes I had for this series faded away, it gets worse and worse with every episode. Plots not even for laughs, they clearly target children under 5 y.o.
Trash compared to the old ducktales.
The Hound of the Baskervilles (1988)
It could be a masterpiece
Being a big fan of S.H. stories both in screen and paper, I admired this edition of the, dare say, best S.H. long story, because of the stunning atmosphere and setting. Jeremy Brett is the true example of how Holmes should be portrayed on screen, but this rendition of Watson by Hardwicke compared to the great David Burke brings a big disappointment.
Could be a 9/10, possibly a 10 as it goes for Sherlock Holmes adaptations but the nature of the story sadly makes Watson the protagonist this time. With this Watson, a 7/10 is a fair grade.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)
Confusing, disturbing,overwhelming,excellent
So when I started watching this movie, for the fist half hour I checked my watch every five minutes out of boredom. As time passed and the plot progressed to more and more cruel and sick levels, the feeling that you have to read on the thin line of the true meaning behind the gruesome metaphor awakened.
Where should I start from? Spotless acting from both Depp (that feels like he's made for these sick roles) and Del Toro (at the pick of his career while this was filmed,he gave his soul in this psychedelic maniac with a knife). The Acid culture takes a solid hit throughout the movie that strips naked the downfall of the sixties and the ruins that it left behind both in the hearts and souls of people that fell victim to it unwillingly or willingly.
At the last monologue of Duke, I was left speechless for a awhile trying to understand the meaning of never understanding an essential fallacy that is fundamentally a desperate assumption.."that is the Acid Culture".
Only blind spot: Casting Maguire as a Hitchhiker? What's up with the wannabe Spiderman on such a serious movie? Seriously now.
A solid,well earned and deserved 9/10.
