The Butterfly Effect 2 (2006)
Not as terrible as it seems
FYI: There are some mild spoilers.
There are movies out there that are far more horrible than Butterfly Effect 2, and I feel this doesn't fall into that category.
Sure it's not perfect, what falls flat with the sequel isn't the acting, or even the way the characters interacted with each other, it's the movie's inability to delve more into the powers as opposed to just dealing with the consequences of it (and it's likely due because we've seen what it is capable of in the original). The little research Nick did on alternate realities in association to migraines and finding a newspaper clipping of Evan's father's sickness was a good touch but like I said, I wished they had explored that angle further.
Instead, they took the romance angle, which was fine but they could've done more. At the end, it gave me the distinct impression that Butterfly Effect 2 was a setup for something else. As if they needed to show this movie before really getting into something more.
And Eric Lively is a capable actor, and Erica Durance did well with the material she's given. It ain't rocket science so I don't hold them to standards of the critical kind. I'm just glad that I wasn't rolling my eyes at their scenes much like when I did watching Cursed or Alone in the Dark.
Shooting Gallery (2005)
Not a bad movie
I didn't watch this movie expecting to find Oscar-caliber performances. But it did have a story, and it kept me interested right to the very end. The premise started out simple. Pool hustlers. And then suddenly it meat of the story starts to unravel, and I got to give props for an awesome climax. The pool playing was eye catching. And it's nice to finally see FPJ play subtle. It's a flawed film, but certainly not a terrible one. There were several pieces of dialogue I could live without. I was also a bit surprised to find myself chuckling a few times - when you see it, you'll know what I mean. Ving though felt terribly miscast, but he didn't distract me, so I'll take the good over the bad.
