Ken Jeong: First Date (2019)
Where's the comedy?
Ken Jeong is a really funny, witty comedy actor, but doing stand-up doesn't seem to be his thing. Most of this set was just the crowd cheering for his achievements, sadly only a little part of the set he actually cracked jokes and did what a stand-up comedian 'is supposed to'. That small part was funny, but not to the point where it makes all the namedropping and countless times of stretching out laughter or clapping alright.
Mediocre at best.
Persona (2019)
Deserves better
Persona pleasantly surprised me. I didn't expect this mini-series to be so interesting, unique and of high quality!
Each episode had its own unique story, the common factor being the persona. (IU) She appears in each episode as the central point of the storyline. What I noticed was that she was always in control, assertive and had a dominant character in each persona.
The acting wasn't anything special. I could rate it average.
What really stood out to me was the montage, light and sound editing. In those aspects, the episodes were put together almost perfectly, my favourite being the fourth and final one.
Though such short storylines could be a bother to some, it didn't stop the mini-series from being very artistic and well put together. The editing made a great impact on me and each storyline left me wondering afterwards. Not because of a cliffhanger, but because I wanted to know more about the persona.
Overall, this is worth a 10 to me. Considering shows like these are gems in the Korean tv show industry.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)
Good movie, could be better
Seven stars for part one of The Hobbit series, which is mainly because of the filming, attributes and acting.
As for the story itself, I haven't read the books yet - so bear with me, but I found it very dry and not so interesting. Many moments I wanted to scream out that >random cliché moment< was so naive. The great wizard who is not so great after all. A simple hobbit like Bilbo Baggins getting dragged into a war like that, which to me, is completely the opposite of his attitude. Perhaps the second and third movie will surprise me, but thus far I haven't enjoyed The Hobbit as much as I thought it would.
The story of An Unexpected Journey has disappointed me. Hopefully the next movies will become better.
As for the filming, attributes and acting - VERY good. Amazing CGI, details, filming/drone shots and OST! The acting was very good too.
The Titan (2018)
Emotional cliché
This movie was an emotional cliché.
Though there were many intense scenes in this movie and the plot was decent, it didn't miss some cliché elements such as escapism and patriotism. The man of the family, deemed to be a hero, preparing to become one. We've heard this story.
The poor monster not feeling accepted, but wait! His family accepts him as he is. Not so surprising at all.
Throughout the movie there were a lot of predictable scenes. However, acting and filming have made this movie worth a seven out of ten. Actors did not disappoint!
Schindler's List (1993)
An emotional masterpiece
This work of art is as much of a masterpiece as people say it is. Beforehand, I thought it was merely overrated. But that, I can tell you, is absolutely not true. This is a masterpiece, empowered by amazing acting, directing, filming and attributes. I've been taken through a rollercoaster of emotions. From fear, to anger, to joy, to grief.
Schindler's List (1993) is an amazing movie, so I wasn't surprised that it was directed by Steven Spielberg. Liam Neeson has done a very good job acting as Oskar Schindler. He has portrayed his emotions very well, helplessness as well as showing true power. Ralph Fiennes hasn't disappointed me either as he showed us great insanity throughout the movie.
While Oskar Schindler himself was a man of innocence, he was not innocent at all. He had taken part in the entertaining side of Nazi activities willingly. Many will say it was done for the greater good. People who actually watched the movie, will know that a big part of Schindler himself told him that he's acting dangerously and should stop helping humanity but rather help his bank account. But an even bigger part took out on his emotions and actually helped the Schindler Jews - later on in the movie.
I'm very happy that the good side of Oskar Schindler took over. He said himself, 'war brings out only the bad in people. Just the bad.', ironically!
The little details throughout the whole movie have very much amazed me. Every gory scene showing massacred Jews, intense shooting scenes, SS activities and so on. His list looked just like names. His golden Nazi pin looked just like gold, not like a person. But actually seeing the bad that was done to innocent Jews, has made a huge difference up to this day. Still, I am more touched by visuals than by mere numbers. Actual persons, actual blood and actual pain. It was all shown, and I'm glad it was. It makes one realise what the war was actually like. Even the noir filming did not matter. Everything came out just as emotional.
I absolutely recommend this movie to everyone who wants to know what a powerful but good man does during the second world war, or how Jews were treated.
Annihilation (2018)
Gets you thinking!
Nice movie. An incredible plot, matching the amazing acting. I must say, only a mastermind would be able to create something so disturbing but awesome at the same time.
Sound effects and music were almost "hypnotising", they really set the mood and get you the suspense every viewer wants.
After the movie I was really amazed about how the complicated story was set together after all; and about the astonishing ending. It's one of those movies where you're just in a state of "wow" when the credits come along.
Also great to see Gina Rodriguez's amazing acting skills in Annihilation as Anya! She did not disappoint.
Get Out (2017)
Disturbing but amazing plot
I loved this movie. The plot was amazingly disturbing. I loved that Rose was part of the complot, fighting until the end - but she past away anyhow.
Freakish plot twists and thrilling scenes; everything put together for getting totally freaked out! The fight scenes were breathtaking, literally. Just unconsciously holding in your breath because of the thrill...
Also, the happy ending was a relief. It would've been a bummer to see poor Chris get taken over by some blind guy!
Overall, a 7! Not really my particular style, but still a great movie for people who don't like horror that much.
Band of Brothers (2001)
Nothing tops Band of Brothers
All political bull aside, this one is a REAL gem. I've seen many similar shows/movies, but nothing ever topped Band of Brothers. Even 2018 movies, with well developed special effects and sounds - BoB tops everything for me.
Oh, how much I love the fact that this one is based on a true story. I love that BoB has implemented segments of the TRUE heroes talking. I found many similarities between the real heroes and the actors (such as speech similarities, roles are obviously very similar in character).
I've felt many many intense emotions during those loud but sad scenes. The perfect combination of sound, emotion, attributes and an overwhelming storyline.
What another pleasant surprise was that I saw my favorite actor - Tom Hardy - suddenly appearing in one of the episodes!
Warrior (2011)
A perfect plot twist
Honestly, beware. This movie had some intense scenes! I've cried multiple times, which I rarely ever do while watching movies, but Warrior has proved itself otherwise.
With amazing acting that got me straight into the story (Tom Hardy is one of my faves!), to an incredible storyline itself - Warrior is definitely a movie with some depth.
The infamous plot twist that occurred between the brothers fell in my taste too. It was amazing how many emotions I've felt throughout the movie, and so have the characters themselves.
Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life (2016)
Truly a gem
Another wonderful Gilmore Girls show added to the gem. This follow-up gave us loyal fans truly what we wanted! Many continuities just don't have the "right" storyline (in our eyes), but this one was actually good.
The filming is incredible, and so is ofcourse the acting. Kudos to Bledel and Graham. What an amazing character development Rory has been through.
The comedy and family-vibes were spot on too!
What I found the best aspect of all, was the ending. An ending us watchers could fill in ourselves, wondering what will happen. Not a sad one, but a hopeful one, a peaceful future. Knowing that the duo will get everything together :-)
As for the length, I found it very fitting. Longer would be a drag, shorter would be "too" short. The fact that they've categorised the episodes in seasons (the title says it: "A Year in the Life") gives me somewhat more closure and I see more structure in the show itself.
American Assassin (2017)
Poorly made teen movie
As the actors were skilled and did their job well, the storyline was the opposite of that.
This storyline has many unrealistic events which honestly embarass some serous topics in this movie.
I've been very surprised by how bad this action movie is made. The story drags down every positive aspect of this movie. Filming wasn't horrible, acting wasn't either.
The story itself may've been based on a novel, I can't understand what went wrong when writing. Dialogue is very dull. Some happenings are too cliché for such high expectations.
Sadly, I'm very disappointed.
