Song of the Sea (2014)
Enchanting!
I came across this film a couple years ago, on Netflix, while looking for something for my kids to watch. I have always been interested in myths & legends, so the premise appealed to me right away.
The animation was absolutely beautiful. It's not realistic but it looks like something out of a children's story book. The story itself is enchanting. Even my son, 7yrs, looked up from his video game to watch. My 2 yr old daughter also stopped to watch, particularly during the singing parts. The music is hauntingly beautiful. The story is suitable for any age.
It centers around selkies but also includes many other creatures and characters from legend. Think twice before passing this one over.
Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994)
Great movie
Back in the late 1990's, I worked for an Indian doctor who wanted to give me a taste of Indian cinema. He loaned me this movie for a weekend. My mom & I watched it together. We enjoyed it so much we watched it multiple times. The music & dancing was was fun, the costumes were gorgeous, & the storyline was really good. I may have to watch it again sometime as I see it's available on Amazon Prime.
Elizabeth at 90: A Family Tribute (2016)
Quite enjoyable
This is a very interesting & fun documentary to watch. There are photographs & home movies spanning from the Queen's childhood up until recent days. Prince Charles narrates. He has a very pleasant voice. I could listen to him for hours. I also love the language & expressions they use. As an American, I find it fascinating. They all speak so eloquently. It's so soothing.
The Queen, herself, & members her family (Prince Charles, Princess Ann, Princes William & Harry, & a few of the Queen's cousins offer commentary on the subject. It really is interesting to see the Queen running, singing, & playing with her sister as a young child. To see large family gatherings (on her mother's side). There's a comment about how Prince George is now running & playing in many of the same places. It reminds me of watching the home videos my grandpa would play for us every year, at Christmas. They may be royal but they're a family & they're essentially like most other families (but with a castle or two). It's really refreshing to see.
Better Late Than Never (2016)
Delightful! 💜
I came in on a rerun of the Sweden episode, recently, having never seen the show. Oh my goodness, this show is great! These four guys together are comedy gold. William Shatner is the serious & cultured one, Terry Bradshaw is the goofball, George Foreman is the quiet & sweet one, & Henry Winkler is (more or less) the normal one. Then there's Jeff Dye, the young man they brought along to schlep their luggage & act as a sort of sidekick.
Not only are they funny but they are genuinely curious about other cultures of the world & sometimes even explore their own heritage. They make learning fun. They each kind of take turns picking out their accommodations, which range from very spare to very luxurious, & the various points of interest & activities that they visit. Meanwhile, they are sharing personal things about their lives, getting to know each other, & letting us know them. This show is both entertaining & educational. I think I watched all the episodes in about two days time. There are only two seasons, one in Asia & one in Europe. I'd love to see more.
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (2018)
So so
Having grown up watching the original series, it was difficult not to draw comparisons between the two. I was excited that a new series was coming but was dismayed when the first animation pictures were released. I decided to give it a try, anyway.
For starters, the storylines are actually pretty decent and even funny. While there are some scenes that are beautiful or interesting to look at, I do not care for this style of animation. Some of the redesigns of beloved characters are also disappointing. The theme song and transformation sequence was a huge let down. The original always gets me pumped but the new version is rather bland.
Adora and many of the other characters are teenagers, which can be both fun and annoying to watch. One of my favorite characters from the original series is one of the more irritating characters to watch, now.
Despite all the negatives, the show still holds my interest. While it's not at the top of my list, I still plan on watching every now & again.
Anne of Green Gables (2016)
Interesting adaptation
I was hesitant to watch this because I read reviews that said it was pretty bad. Well, it wasn't terrible. It had a lot of elements that were true to the book. Of course, some parts were changed a little, which is always an unfortunate part of book to movie adaptations.
The actress playing Anne does a good job and I think she looks closer to Anne's description from the book than Megan Follows did, although Anne was supposed to be tall and both actresses seemed rather short.
The actress playing Diana is all wrong. In the book, Diana is slightly plump and beautiful, with black hair. This Diana is much taller than Anne, very thin, and has a medium-brown hair.
Most of the important moments are there and the outdoor scenes are lovely. I will probably be watching the next installment soon.
