White Noise (2022)
Stupid
I have not reviewed a movie in over a year. But this movie is SO BAD a warning needs to be put out. A stupid rambling story line goes in many obtuse directions. None worth following. Worse yet it's over two painful hours long. A comedy I think not unless you thing dumb people saying dumb things is funny. Hitler versus Elvis debate...good god ....
People are afraid of dying... wow that's earth shattering news.
This dance sequence at the end "feels right" because it's as dumb as the rest of the movie. If Netflix strings many more lemons like this together they will go out of business. When the professors get together to talk. Move on. They say NOTHING.
I want my two hours back.!
Uppity: The Willy T. Ribbs Story (2020)
Great
What a great and necessary documentary. The trail blazing Mr Ribbs did was inspiring. And as with all of Adam Carolla s docs, it was well put together. Thx.
The Hammer (2007)
Good movie!
Give it a shot! It's a really good movie. Nice story line and good pacing. Sports fans will like it as well.
Arrival (2016)
No no.....wait.......what?
Who thinks this movie is good? Disjointed story telling...flash backs then forwards probably sideways too....IDK
I have no idea what was trying to be said or told in this movie. It started out like it wanted to be a modern day "Day the earth stood still"...........but quickly went off the rails.
Don't know who is married to who and why it matters. Why a dying child? Hokus Pokus on language deciphering.....yawn.
The movie is about 30 minutes too long but that wouldn't save it because I would still have been longing for it to end sooner.
Best Picture nominee?........what a sad state Hollywood is in.
Skip this one..........SiFi buffs will especially be disappointed.
La La Land (2016)
Nice try.....but a miss
I appreciate the effort to put on a big musical, but other than the main theme... the music wasn't that memorable and the dancing mediocre. I like both stars but think it was a reach for both of them to sing and dance. Again ... appreciate the effort.
The songs didn't really tell or move the story along (aka Grease)and I found myself dozing during them.
I would have given the movie a 2 but the last 5 minutes at least delivered a satisfying ending.....and big plus.
Watch this one at home where you can fast-forward through the dance numbers after you have had enough of them.
Hell or High Water (2016)
Good Story
A good cops and robbers story. Maybe not Oscar worthy. But a good story nonetheless. A modern day western that probably would have been received even better if it had been made 20 years ago (closer to the Savings and Loan crisis) The acting is strong and the story is well paced. Gritty cinematography works well for the movie and the ending fits the disparate tail to the end.
You've got to appreciate a movie that your not quite sure how its going to end.
The fact that the Hollywood snobs didn't say this movie is "critically acclaimed" means that it might actually be good.....and it was. Jeff Bridges still has "it"....don't miss Hell or High water!
Manchester by the Sea (2016)
Very disappointing
Another example of Hollywood losing its way. Is the art of telling a good story gone? Its one of those movies I couldn't wait to end. A slow plodding story you hope takes off and goes somewhere but it just ambles along until your telling yourself enough! Best picture.....please. A waste of 2 hours! Boring melodramatic and predictable. I felt like I opened someone's from door and watched there life go by for a wile.............ugg.
Casey Affleck might be a good actor some day but this movie was just to get his feet wet. And it was at the movie goers expense. if Hollywood keeps this up... "critically acclaimed" is SOON going to be CODE for steer clear!
The Lobster (2015)
Worst movie ever
Up until now I've thought Sideways was the most pointless movie ever.....not any more. This is the worst movie I've ever seen! And the fact that's its 2 hours long makes it worse. The idea of the movie (taken in a Woddy Allen type direction)would have made for a good movie...the trailer even suggests as much. Its quirky but in a bad way...no substance and throws in shocking scenes to try to throw you off the scent of a chaotic story line. I stayed with it to the end (don't bother)in hopes of a payoff of a good story in the end. It pitifully sputters out. The movie has one of those endings that is mindless, making you think us missed some great thesis on social morays....you didn't!.....90% critics on rotten tomatos? REALLY ?.....let them think they know more than us....it stunk and they are afraid to say it.......avoid at all cost....!
Mississippi Grind (2015)
Don't waste your time
Not since the movie Sideways, has a film tried SO hard and achieved nothing.
For starters, the first half of the movie has so much loud background noise and music that you cant hear the dialog. When the sound editor does show up and you can hear the dialog you find out they really have nothing exceptional to say.
The two characters are likable enough, but the story doesn't do them justice. You go to a casino, your either going to win or lose, but this movie thinks that's enough to get by on,......its not.
The directors talk about going to a riverboat and seeing all the gamblers and interesting people and "knew there was a story there"....probably true but most stories are pathetic, tired and sad
How about giving your movie a little more depth. So many ideas and relationships were not explored.
Gambling and casinos can be a vehicle to tell a story, but it isn't interesting when it IS the story.
When the film is over your caught thinking....did I miss something? And whether you did or not (and you did not)the fact that your asking the question isn't the feeling a movie go-er wants to have.
Slow West (2015)
Shallow
Beautiful to look at but shallow character development.
Working from back to forward. At the ending I feel it would have much more gripping had I knew and felt for the characters more. A lot of what would have been emotional attachment to the story was left on the table by only hinting at the plot line.
At one point I didn't know if they ALL weren't out for the money.
The journey (and that's all it was) ended with an explosion of events that seem to come before the story was finished telling itself.
What would drive a 16 year old to travel across the world, risk his life and go through that for a girl? I don't know... Its only lightly touched on therefore the movie has little emotional pull.
The story progression was lacking but the cinematography and quirky scenes leave hope for next time.
Schitt$ Creek (2015)
Worth a try
Very funny. Just don't try to over think it. Quirky and harm less, you don't have to go to deep to get the show.....and it comes in 23 minute bites (I mean that in a good way).
If you like Eugene Levy, this show is for you and more. The rest of the cast has perfect whit and timing..... The range of gag's is from subtle (Giant menus) to over the top billboards. Which makes it what it is....an easy to watch sit com that doesn't always go for the home run but a solid base hit.
Those who don't like are taking it to seriously, just relax and enjoy the ride.
I heard about the show by word of mouth so don't be surprised if it's a hit next year. Looking forward to next season ....bravo!
Black or White (2014)
Good not great
Didn't even know this movie was out until I heard the Costner interview on Adam Carolla's pod cast. I trust Costner's movies, so I went to see it.
The first half of the movie follows Kramer vs Kramer so close it was disappointing but it does get its own identity in the end.
The grandmas need to pull her granddaughter out of her affluential situation to bring her back to live in the "hood" didn't ring true to me.
As far as groundbreaking, if you already believe as MLK said..."will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."... then this movie is a small enjoyable step where as that might be a giant necessary leap for others......and in that way, this movie serves its purpose.
