Footlight Glamour (1943)
THE SHOW MUST GO ON!
Outrageously funny episode, again with Dagwood trying to impress a client -- this time the man's daughter, played by noneother than Ann Savage, not too long before her landmark role in DETOUR.
This was exceptionally written by both series writer Karen DeWolf and Connie Lee, who would continue writing for the series after DeWolf left to handle other film projects and later tv.
Distinguished Thurston Hall is spot on as Mr. Wheeler, a wealthy client of Dithers who wants to get down to business, only to have his daughter, Vicky (Ann Savage), a stage actress, causing all sorts of trouble with a play. Naturally, to keep Vicky happy, Dagwood and Blondie get into the amateur production along with Mr. Dithers, his wife! -- and Mr. Crum, the mailman (Irving Bacon). This was Bacon's final appearance in the series, who went on to appear in many classic films.
The goofy stage play is a gem; everything that could go wrong goes wrong, and Dagwood is laugh out loud hilarious. Nobody could hold this together better than Arthur Lake, and Ann Savage is just as good playing the spoiled daughter.
This episode also includes some well known characters actors, such as Grace Hayle as Mrs. Dithers. Grace was in numerous top films, such as THE GREAT DICTATOR as Madame Napaloni. It's a shame she did not return to the series again as Dither's no nonsense wife. Popular Mexican actor Rafael Alcayde plays Jerry, Vicky's beau, and Elspeth Dudgeon plays Frances, a staple in many films, generally as kindly old women and grandmothers.
Best line department; Vicky walks into the house, looking beautiful. Alexander points to her and says to Blondie, "Mommy! Its that Daddy's bonus?
10 Stars just for that line.
To note, this episode marked a triumphant return of the series, as it was actually cancelled by Columbia Pictures a year earlier. Columbia seemed to lose interest in the Blondie series, but with the sucess of the radio show and many letters written in by fans, it was finally renewed.
Always on dvd in separate box sets that break up some episodes, or you can buy each episode individually. Thanks always to MOVIES net for running the series Saturday mornings.
The Mod Squad: Never Give the Fuzz an Even Break (1969)
THE BIGGEST CON MAN OF 'EM ALL!
PERFECT casting with Maurice Evans as Admiral Nathanial "Nat" Johnson, self described king of con men. Evans is a class act, best known for playing Elizabeth Montgomery's Shakespearian buff father on BEWITCHED. What a trip with this guy.
This was the only episode written by Marvin Wald, who wrote for DAKTARI, and he rolls with it, adding some dark comedy into the mix. Nat's game is to never give a sucker an even break (from the famous WC Fields movie), hence the title, "never give the fuzz an even break." His targets are some wealthy old ladies, best played by Harriett MacGibbon (Mrs. Drysdale from the BEVERLY HILLBILLIES) and popular character actress Amzie Strickland. It's way cool to also see Mrs. Drysdale in this one.
Pete, Linc and Julie have to go undercover to catch Nat, who has some extra charm to go with his offbeat character and is kind of hard to resist at times. Don't miss the dialogue between Nat and the guys, lecturing them like he's their father?
Exceptionally directed by Earl Bellamy, who headed over 1600 classic tv shows in his long career, such as MY THREE SONS and STARSKY AND HUTCH. He was the right director for this episode.
SEASON 2 EPISODE 13 Christmas 1969 episode. Remastered Paramount dvd box set. Vol 1 and 2. 4 dvds. Released 2012.
The Mind Reader (1933)
CHANDRA, THE MASTER OF TRICKERY.
Powerful story, probably based on real life incidents, particularly during the Great Depression. Superbly written by Wilson Mizner, who died not too long after this film. Mizner wrote such classics as 20,000 YEARS IN SING SING and ONE WAY PASSAGE, an inspiration to writers to this day.
Warren William, the master of suave, is perfect in the role of a debonaire con called Chandra the Great, master of trickery and deception. Chandra is hailed as an incredibly gifted mind reader, but nothing more than a fake who only knows how to steal money and subsequently ruin many lives of those who believe in his power.
Enter beautiful Sylvia (exceptionally played by Constance Cummings), an unemployed secretary who could use a job and goes to work for him. She discovers his racket, but also falls in love with him -- which complicates matters and may dramatically change his own future.
Excellent direction by Roy Del Ruth, who was behind many classic crime dramas at the time. Good support from Allen Jenkins (as Frank) and Clarence Muse (as Sam), playing Chandra's partners in crime. Mayo Methot, best known for being the wife of Humphrey Bogart, has a small but effective part as one of Chandra's victims. Also dramatic actress Natalie Moorehead co-stars.
This was one of the last Hollywood productions Constance Cummings would star in before moving to England, where she became even more popular for decades to come. Warren William would next star in GOLD DIGGERS OF 1933 and then onto playing detectives Philo Vance and Perry Mason.
A treat from start to finish, and one of William's best roles. Always on Warner Brothers remastered dvd. Thanks to TCM for running this classic.
The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis: Dobie Goes Beatnik (1960)
DOBIE GOES BEATNIK. HERB GOES NUTS!
Gotta love this stuff, written by series writer Joel Kane, who obviously worked overtime.
It's a case of the old switch-a-roo, Dobie style. Humble Herb has been officially named Grand Exalted Bull Bison of his lodge, BUT it's not set without the blessing of the Grand Exalted Ruler, McCluskey, played to the hilt by popular character actor Dick Wessel.
Everything should work out fine and dandy once McCluskey pays a visit to the Gillis' home -- until he has a slight run-in with Dobie. This complicates everything, especially since Herb told McCluskey what a great son he has. Comes an idea! Since McCluskey doesn't know the kid he ran into is REALLY Dobie, why not make a switch and have Maynard prentend to be Herb's son?
Unbelievably funny, and you have to admit, Dobie makes a cool beatnik with long hair and a beard, while Maynard looks business casual with a jacket and tie? See to believe stuff. Dick Wessel is funny in this role, known for numerous character parts, both as good and bad guys. One of his breakthrough roles was as the villainous Cueball in DICK TRACY MEETS CUEBALL.
10 Stars for one great episode. SEASON 2 EPISODE 4. Remastered dvd box set. 5 dvds. Released 2020. Super green cover with Dobie and Maynard.
Barnaby Jones: Man on Fire (1979)
BARNABY AND THE FIRE CAPER!
Very good start to the eighth and final season of the series, and on a sentimental note with frequent guest star Gary Lockwood, proverbial bad guy, up to his old tricks. I remember this episode when it first came out, especially for Lockwood. Knew it would be exciting.
This is one of those "I'll give you the benefit" stories... Barnaby teams with an old friend, Jim Parks (Lockwood) an arson investigator whose latest conclusion to a fire is a mistake. It was no accident. Barnaby gives him the benefit of the doubt, but slowly and surely begins to realize that somethings up. The story, written by Jack V. Fogarty, is similar to the early season episodes that had Barnaby REALLY suspicious, even of people he knew. That's what made the show so much fun. Fogarty later went on to write for TJ HOOKER.
Lockwood is complimented by Burr DeBenning, also tops at playing villains. He had a distinct look. Michael Strong guest stars and Ellen Geer, the daughter of actor Will Geer. Geer will always be remembered for her role in HAROLD AND MAUDE.
For all us car buffs, Barnaby drives a brand new 1979 2 door Ford LTD, a beautiful car in its day. He always drove the LTD series throughout the series run, but this car is sporty. Of course, producer Quinn Martin was a fronter for Ford in all his series, notably CANNON and his Lincoln and the FBI that featured a ton of Mustangs and Thunderbirds, driven by Efrem Zimbalist. Those were the days.
SEASON 8 EPISODE 1 remastered CBS/Paramount dvd box set. 6 dvd set. Released 2018. Note Lee Meriwether appears with Buddy Ebsen on the cover this time!
My Three Sons: Love Thy Neighbor (1970)
ROBBIE AND KATIE AND THE BEAVE!
It was only a matter of time Jerry Mathers would appear on the show, especially since Tony Dow had guested years earlier. He's a bit more grown up and looks quite handsome with a moustache. What a treat! Very cleverly written by Gwen Bagni, a popular tv writer at the time, who was also doing episodes for the MOD SQUAD. This was the only episode she wrote for the series, and its a shame.
It's all about "the neighbors!"... Robbie and Katie have their hands full with Joe Lawrie (Mathers) and his wife, played by Lori Martin, who happen to be living next door, and it's too close for comfort in an apartment building. Interestingly, Lori actually played Jerry Mathers girlfriend in one of the last episodes of LEAVE IT TO BEAVER. Great trivia question. This would be her second appearance on the show, and is fondly remembered among fans, having passed very suddenly.
A rare appearance for Jerry Mathers, who guested on an episode of LASSIE the same year, and on BATMAN two years earlier.
Another reason why MY THREE SONS was such a memorable show. Don't miss this. SEASON 10 EPISODE 25 remastered/color. Thanks so much to METV.
The Beverly Hillbillies: The Boarder Stays (1964)
ONE DISTINGUISHED BOARDER!
I think the bucket of water that gets "accidentally" thrown in Arthur Treacher's face --may -- have had something to do with his decision to retire from acting not too long after this episode. You be the judge. Whatever the case, he's absolutely priceless. Another classic performance.
Treacher returns for a second episode, playing the new butler and chauffeur for the Clampetts, all the idea of Mr. Drysdale, who wants to bring some class into their lives. What Jed and Granny think, HOWEVER, is their new guest wishes to rent a room! And when he decides to leave, Granny gets out her shotgun because he hasn't paid any rent! Best scene has Granny on top of the mansion, ready to blast away,
Just outrageous material written by series writer Mark Tuttle, and once again, prim and property Arthur Treacher is the whole show. We will never forget him opposite Shirley Temple, and in later years, for appearing on this show in a comedic take-off of himself. Arthur went on to appear as a guest on many talk shows, and inspired by the success of Colonel Sanders, went on to open his own famous chain of restaurants.
This episode also holds the distinction of having three animal members appearing together. Arnie the dog and Duke the dog turn up, in addition to Judy the chimp, probably the most famous of all for her appearances on LOST IN SPACE and DAKTARI.
Best of SEASON 3 EPISODE 12 remastered.
Barnaby Jones: Temptation (1979)
LT. BIDDLE IN A MANNIX TYPE OF JAM.
For all us MANNIX fans, this story is quite familiar, all about romancing a gangster's girlfriend. But there's a clever twist. Generally, this should have been an episode revolving around JR, who got himself involved with lots of women in BIG trouble. Instead, series writer Norman Jolley wrote it around Lt Biddle for a change of pace.
Biddle, it turns out, has ties to a gangster's girlfriend. To further complicate matters, the gangster is accused of killing a witness. Very interesting material when you put Biddle in the middle of it all, also
a good role for actor John Carter, allowing him to show off his acting skills in a different scenario. Of course, JR's investigation lands him in hot water with the cops, but Biddle is the center of attention.
Two popular actors put this episode over the top. Pretty Trish Stewart, who would later appear on THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS, plays Julie, also in a very good performance. Catch dramatic actor Jonathan Goldsmith, always fun to watch. Goldsmith gained wide acclaim in tv commercials as the Dos Esquis beer spokesperson.
By the way, John Carter gets star billing in the opening credits, and rightly so.
Final episode of the season. SEASON 7 EPISODE 25 remastered color/CBS.
Leave It to Beaver: Part-Time Genius (1958)
PART TIME GENIUS, FULL TIME BEAVE!
Hilarious, yet spot on story all about IQ tests, kind of like the forerunner of today's SAT tests -- but for kids.
Beave is still in grade school, however, the powers that be wish to test the young students for their aptitude, and Beave scores BIG TIME!
You have to love this comedy of errors, so well written by producers Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher, because these strange things happen from time to time. School principal Mrs. Rayburn calls in Ward and June to propose sending genius Beave to an exclusive school. It's fun to see the shifting dialogue in this one, from amazed, yet impressed parents Ward and June to panic stricken kids Beave and Wally, who can only conclude this place is some sort of prison for kids???
Of course... of course you probably can guess (and right off the bat) Beave has nothing to worry about, just an ordinary kid, but that's the neat twist in this memorable story. Just ride with it.
Spot on support from popular character actor John Hoyt as Dr. Compton, best known in the CLASSIC accordian episode. Can't get enough of this guy. Larry and Whitey are also present, making this episode all the more goofy with their observations.
Best of SEASON 1 EPISODE 14 remastered. And thank you again ME TV.
Alfred Hitchcock Presents: Out There - Darkness (1959)
MISS FOX AND HER POODLE!
This story may have been written for Bette Davis, who was making more tv appearances at this time in her career. Her next film, POCKETFUL OF MIRACLES was a few years away.
Davis plays Miss Fox, a woman of means who seems to have a poodle as her sole companion. Young James Congden plays Eddie, the doorman, who can use her help and a little extra cash -- getting much more than he bargained for.
Atmospheric and rather creepy at times, also an excellent character study. Bette Davis makes for one interesting character, and right from the start. Written by Bernard Schoenfeld, who did many classic stories for Hitch.
For soap opera fans, Congden appeared in the EDGE OF NIGHT, ANOTHER WORLD and RYANS HOPE. Look for popular character actor Frank Albertson as Sgt. Kirby, whose long career went back to the 1930s, much like Bette Davis, and I wouldn't be surprised if they knew each other.
Davis' former co-star Paul Henreid directed, directing her again in DEAD RINGER in 1964 in a similar rich lady type role. In fact, this episode may have had some influence on that movie. If you're a film buff, it's fun to compare the two, and makes you wonder how it would have all turned out if Hitch directed.
The studio system played a part, with Davis working for years at Warners and Hitch at Universal. So close but so far away. From SEASON 4 EPISODE 16. Remastered 5 dvd box set. 2008 release.
Leave It to Beaver: The Perfume Salesmen (1957)
THE LOUSY PERFUME EPISODE!
It makes you wonder if comedy writer Ben Gershman, who later wrote for the BRADY BUNCH, had the famous Roadrunner cartoons in mind? Hmmm?
Beave and Wally need money to buy an expensive film projector. Comes the opportunity to make fast cash selling perfume, all supplied by a company called ACME? If you remember the Roadrunner cartoons, the rascally coyote bought all his traps (to catch the Roadrunner) from ACME. Some worked, some didn't.
In this case, the perfume Beave and Wally sell door to door is stink-a-roo! What a letdown, and is ACME really a legit company? Funny stuff, and what a coincidence.
In a clever switch, and I agree with the last reviewer, Ward and June do NOT reach the same conclusion.
Interestingly, June believes Wally and Beave should learn a hard lesson as they were obviously ripped off. Ward, on the other hand, believes hard work and determination pays off no matter what.
Truly, these are both excellent cases to be made.
A very intelligent script, and again, why the series was so much fun to watch.
Best of SEASON 1 EPISODE 12 remastered.
Barnaby Jones: Target for a Wedding (1979)
BARNABY AND THE GOLD MINE CAPER!
No question producer Robert Sherman gave Buddy Ebsen's daughter a part in this episode, and a very good role at that.
I agree with the last reviewer, the story has a very interesting slant. Bonnie Ebsen plays Laurie, who happens to be Barnaby's god daughter, and who is about to come into a fortune in gold. Amazing. Enter handsome and crafty Greg Evigan (as Blue Simpson) who wants the gold mine all to his greedy self, even if he has to kill for it.
Tag this a crime drama slash soap opera of sorts, and with a sharp cast. Bonnie Ebsen, who appeared six times on the series, does a fairly good job here, matched by Greg Evigan, who at the time was starring in his own series, BJ AND THE BEAR, and playing a good guy who all of us kids back in the day really liked. This was an offbeat role for him. Ron Hayes plays the sheriff, later to appear on DALLAS and veteran actress Bibi Osterwald plays Grace.
To her credit, Bonnie Ebsen co-starred in the short lived tv series THE KALLIKAKS a year earlier, and in the 80s guested on DAYS OF OUR LIVES.
10 Stars for director Robert Sherman who wrote this change of pace story. Great late night entertainment. SEASON 7 EPISODE 24 remastered color/CBS. Released 2018.
Night Must Fall (1937)
ENTER THE GENTLEMAN KILLER.
Hitchcock flavor, but without Hitch, still expertly
directed by Richard Thorpe, somewhat a master himself of medium budget films that had staying power. This, without a doubt, is one of them. Also a showcase for three terrific leads, Robert Montgomery, Rosalind Russell, and Dame May Whitty, in her MGM screen debut at age 72. Notes indicate she did appear in one silent film as far back as 1915.
Whitty plays a wealthy, but not too pleasant retiring woman who happens to hire on a charismatic charmer, so well played by Robert Montgomery, and with an accent! Montgomery spins tales of his adventurous life, entertaining Whitty and her niece (Russell), who has her doubts, but somehow is attracted to this fanciful young man. It's all so quaint --until there's a grisly murder in the neighborhood.
Often referred to as a horror film by some critics, this all due to the "contents" of a hatbox, but it's more mystery and suspense and some outstanding acting, particularly Whitty, who begins to slowly unravel. Her sobering performance earned her an Oscar nomination.
I agree with the last reviewer. If you are not familiar with Robert Montgomery, this definitely is the film to watch him, and at his absolute best in an offbeat role. Montgomery began his long career playing debonair leading men opposite the likes of Greta Garbo and Norma Shearer. An early dramatic role for Russell who would soon successfully switch to comedy, namely HIS GIRL FRIDAY opposite Cary Grant.
Whitty's next assignment would be for Hitchcock in THE LADY VANISHES and on to stardom. Richard Thorpe directed something lighter, and one of his best, DOUBLE WEDDING, starring William Powell and Myrna Loy.
Long running film at 115 minutes, remade by MGM in 1964, starring Albert Finney, and more with a horror slant. The hatbox remains.
Thanks again to TCM for running this classic. Always on dvd and remastered blu ray.
Leave It to Beaver: Wally's Girl Trouble (1957)
THE WALLY AND PENNY SAGA!
Famous comedy writer Ben Gershman wrote this classic episode, long time writer for OZZIE AND HARRIET. Don't suppose this could have been a left-over story for Ricky and David Nelson, now tailored for Wally and Beave? Maybe. Ben also wrote for MY FAVORITE MARTIAN, ANDY GRIFFITH, many others.
It's time to go to dance class and get some culture, although both Wally and Beave ain't too keen about the whole thing. And then it happens... Wally meets pretty Penny Jamison (played by Cindy Carol). The neat thing about this story is the guys were actually going to fake out Ward and June and everybody else -- and go fishing! That is until Penny got into the picture.
A cute story about puppy love and all that comes with it, of course leaving Beave out in the cold who is determined to win Wally back! Period. Also some nifty dialogue between Beave and especially Larry, who gets some really funny lines. Behind the scenes, this episode may have started the debate between Rusty Stevens parents and producers Joe Connolly and Bob Mosher, who insisited he should have a larger role, if not more dialogue, which eventually led to him being cut from the show. In fact, there are (a few) later episodes where Larry has more lines than Beaver. Lessons learned, don't argue with the boss.
Cindy Carol would go onto to appear in many more episodes of the show, later to become famous as Gidget in the movie, GIDGET GOES TO ROME. She retired from acting in 1966.
Best of SEASON 1 EPISODE 10 remastered dvd box set. There are two box sets. The first, released in 2005, limited edition, with 3 dvds. The second, with 6 dvds, released in 2014.
Barnaby Jones: Child of Love Child of Vengeance: Part 2 (1979)
CONCLUSION OF A SUPER STORY.
PART II. Michael Preece did a fine job directing, it shows. This was actually an early credit for him. He later became series director for DALLAS.
The star of the show is Pat Hingle (as Garrison), the devious head of a cult, linked to kidnapping and murder, who also gets Barnaby in HOT water. In all probability, writer Robert Lenski was inspired by the story of Synanon, the former drug counseling center, which was making scandalous headlines at the time, particularly with the attempted murder of an investigating lawyer.
With his license (conveniently) pulled, Barnaby has no choice but to do background work while JR joins the cult and comes face to face with Garrison, who now wants to kill him. In the real life case of Synanon, a hidden rattlesnake nearly killed the attorney. This is fairly wild stuff, and with a fabulous cast, including Joanne Linville and Marlyn Mason.
If you're a Pat Hingle fan, the same year this episode was filmed, he appeared in two classic films; NORMA RAE, that earned Sally Field and Oscar and in ELVIS, as Colonel Parker. I think he carries a bit of Parker's sly character with him in this role. Whatever the case, Hingle was a natural.
Keep the late night coffee brewing. SEASON 7 EPISODES 22 and 23 remastered color CBS. 6 dvds. Released 2018. Note the picture of Buddy Ebsen on the box cover looks to be from "Breakfast At Tiffanys." It sure looks like a photo of him from that film, about 20 years earlier.
My Three Sons: Mister X (1970)
THE MISSION IMPOSSIBLE CONNECTION?
I think the best episodes of the series had memorable guest stars. Oscar winner Jane Wyman had previously appeared a few episodes back, playing Steve's former girl friend. This time Lew Ayres (fondly remembered as Dr. Kildare at MGM) plays Barbara's late husband's dad.
HOWEVER... there's a neat twist, and the kind of stuff all us kids back in the day loved. Not forget the title, MISTER X.
Ayres plays Professor Harper, and kind of looks the part, but he's also the mysterious type. Or at least has that aura about him. Right off the bat, everyone in the house has questions about this guy, and what's his angle?
Lew Ayres is perfect for the role, especially with a beard, looking much older and distinguished and with more intrigue around him. If you're a TV buff, this may all play into MISSION IMPOSSIBLE. The show was a super hit at the time, and many of the villains on the series had beards and moustaches. Once again, Mister X!
This is a fun episode, written by series regular Lois Hire, who also wrote for the BRADY BUNCH.
Look for Charles Bateman as Mark Tanner. Charles later was a soap opera regular on SANTA BARBARA.
From SEASON 10 EPISODE 23 remastered color. Note; shop around because the dvd box sets seem to carry only so many seasons, and considering this show ran 12 seasons, you have to do the research. Thanks to METV for showing all the episodes, especially the classic black and white ones.
Alfred Hitchcock Presents: Mrs. Herman and Mrs. Fenimore (1958)
LET'S KILL UNCLE!
Two exceptional actresses make this story a hoot, one of the seasons very best episodes. This was also Oscar winner Mary Astor's second appearance on the show, and she rolls with it. Truly, a role that was made for her.
Astor plays Mrs. Fenimore, an actress who has seen better times and is looking for a new home. Popular character actress Doro Merande plays the frustrated lady of the house who is saddled with a nasty uncle (well played by Russell Collins), making her life miserable -- except the fact that he's loaded. She's had enough of this guy and, perhaps, maybe.... Mrs. Fenimore can help her dispose of the old man so she can live happily ever after?
Astor steals the show here and plays a real smooth game, without giving too much away. A dynamic two woman show to be sure, spiced with some very interesting dialogue between both leads. Once again, a classic script from Robert C. Dennis.
Mary Astor, still looking beautiful, had given up her movie contract at MGM, tired of always playing somebody's mother and switched to television, and with enormous success. No question Hitch was a fan of hers and wanted to get Mary on his tv show. Doro Merande, a popular stage actress, later entered films and tv, likewise with great success. She was best known as Aunt Ethel on the HONEYMOONERS.
This one will give you a hearty laugh, again thanks to Hitch and the great Mary Astor. SEASON 4 EPISODE 12 remastered Universal dvd box set. 5 dvds. 15 hrs 30 min length. Released 2008.
The Twilight Zone: Queen of the Nile (1964)
BEWARE OF THE QUEEN!
Really weird story that was outlined by Charles Beaumont, though finished by Jerry Sohl, due to the fact that Beaumont was quite ill. Sohl also wrote for Alfred Hitchcock's tv show, without too much surprise. This one has that feel, and will definitely keep your attention.
Beautiful Anne Blyth plays one of the greatest movie stars of all time -- who has literally found the fountain of youth. You have to see this one all the way through it's that bizarre, and so well acted.
Blyth, best known for her Oscar nominated performance as Joan Crawford's daughter in MILDRED PIERCE, shines in this role. A one of a kind performance.
Good support from popular actor Lee Philips as Jordy and veteran Celia Lovsky (as Viola) in one of those mystery lady roles she plays so well. Lovsky was married to actor Peter Lorre, who passed around the time this episode was filmed. Good trivia question.
10 Stars for originality. SEASON 5 EPISODE 23 remastered.
Dead Ringer (1963)
THE GOOD AND THE BAD BETTE DAVIS.
Actually, BOTH roles Bette Davis plays here --as twins--are a work of art. But there is some degree of sympathy for the poorer of the two, at least for a short while.
Quite similar to Davis' hit film, A STOLEN LIFE, about 20 years earlier. A soap opera on steroids to be sure, and don't ya love it. One sister fools the other sister, stealing away the handsome and wealthy man of her dreams -- claiming to be having his baby -- although many years later, it's revealed to be a lie. Now poor sister Betty has her revenge, killing her sibling and assuming her identity, HOWEVER, is this the kind of life she was prepared for?
Spot on acting from Bette Davis, as always, who is the whole show and fun to watch, especially for her one-liners. The dialogue here is TOPS, exceptionally written and directed by her former co-star Paul Henreid, who directed many tv episodes for Alfred Hitchcock. And when you come down to it, this film has some Hitch similarities to its credit, albeit shades of a dark comedy at times. Filmed in glorious black and white, and catch the neat jazz score.
Solid support from Karl Malden, in a very good role, and Pater Lawford at his nasty best as the unprincipled playboy. Great bit from veteran actress Estelle Winwood as rich Betty's eccentric aunt, who steals a few scenes without too much surprise.
A one of a kind film to be sure, and with some camp elements to make it all click. Davis would follow this with HUSH, HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE. Amazing.
Always on dvd and remastered blu ray. Thanks to MOVIES Net for running this classic quite a bit.
The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis: A Taste for Lobster (1960)
DOBIE AND THE REAL, REAL RICH KID.
Series writer Arnold Horwitt, who later wrote for PATTY DUKE, put together a rather clever episode. This time around, Dobie is competing against a 13 year old self made business-kid called Chrissie Tyler, played by Michael Burns. Amazing.
It all starts with Dobie meeting up with pretty Gwyneth (Christian Kay) who prefers the simple life, especially when it comes to money. Since Dobie is flat broke, this is his kind of girl! -- until Chrissie starts dating Gwyneth's younger sisiter and showing off his wealth. Chrissie, it turns out, runs a successful babysitting business (with a lot of neighborhood kids as his employees!) in an ice cream parlor?
Unable to resist a call to duty, especially to make some FAST cash, Dobie starts up his own competing babysitting business and is an overnight success. He also can't help but show off all his new found money to Gwyneth. Why not? Dobie is dressed to impress and struttin' his stuff in fine style. A sight to see.
Popular child actor Michael Burns (in his tv debut) is fun to watch as the fast-talking, tough as nails business kid. In a few years, he gained fame as young Barnaby on WAGON TRAIN, later giving it all up to become a distinguished college professor.
Look for Billy Booth, in a small role as one of the kids working for Chrissie, best known as Tommy on DENNIS THE MENACE. Also Christian Kay would soon gain popularity by appearing in BLUE HAWAII, starring Elvis.
Dedicated to all us armchair business tycoons! SEASON 1 EPISODE 38 remastered dvd box set. 5 dvds. Released 2020. The color cover with Dobie and Maynard is the best.
Hawaiian Eye: A Touch of Velvet (1961)
TRACY AND THE BLIND GIRL.
Veteran Erna Lazarus wrote this adventurous and very poignant episode, certainly one of the best of the season.
Beautiful Sharon Hugueny guest stars as Ellie who is essential in the case of a well known artist who is murdered. Tracy teams with Ellie to find the elusive killer, although it gets a bit complicated because she's totally blind! Hugueny, who was a protege of producer Jack Warner at the time, is quite convincing in this rare role, and should have gotten an Emmy nod.
A combination of both top writing and directing by Edward Dein, who handled some excellent scenes with Sharon Hugueny. And wait for the ending.
Good support from Robert Hutton and Richard Davalos as Mickey. Special guest star is entertainer
Sterling Mossman and his band. Mossman was the real-life brother of series co-star Douglas, though strangely they have no scenes together.
Writer Erna Lazarus was also writing scripts for SURFSIDE 6 at the time. She was one of only a few acclaimed female writers in the 1940s who worked steadily in Hollywood for decades, passing at 102 in 2006.
SEASON 2 EPISODE 18 remastered. Thanks to ME TV for showing this classic series on Sunday nights along with 77 SUNSET STRIP. Terrific combo.
77 Sunset Strip: Stranger from the Sea (1963)
THE 50,000 DOLAR CAPER!
Great story for Kookie as he helps an old pal from Japan, memorably played by Mako. Mako comes to visit his uncle in Hollywood, who represents Japanese farmers. There's only one problem, the old man skipped town with fifty thousand dollars belonging to all the farmers. Or did he?
This is also a violent episode for Kookie (Jeff is more on the phone!) dodging fists and bullets. One of the best bad guy performances from Steve Brodie, as Anson, a homicidal maniac. Also Robert Wilke as Vern and keep an eye on popular character actor Joseph Mell as Nevill, another creepy guy. Mell usually played some fun characters, but not in this episode. These guys are lethal.
Extremely well directed by series regular George Waggner who really works this cast. The last scene shootout is classic, and what made the show such a hit. Super writing from two pros; John Butler, who wrote a ton of B westerns and adventure films and Louis Huston, who began his career writing for HIGHWAY PATROL. Do the math.
Always great to see Mako, who is missed. Mako in a few years would earn an Oscar nomination for his memorable role in THE SAND PEBBLES.
This one clicks. From SEASON 5 EPISODE 23 remastered. Thanks so much to ME TV for running these golden oldies on Sunday nights.
Leave It to Beaver: Water Anyone? (1957)
BEAVE, THE BUSINESS MAN, INCORPORATED.
You gotta' love this episode, and one that inspired all us kids way back when. GOING INTO BUSINESS!
Actually, Beaver is "temporarily" in business. It all starts when Ward helps Wally raise money for new baseball uniforms, naturally leaving Beave out because he's too young. But Beaver is smart!
He moseys around the neighborhood and finds out the water main will be temporarily shut down --no cold water on a HOT day. So he starts filling up every bottle he can get his hands on, selling glasses of water for five cents -- about 55 cents today!
Best part finds June being one of his first customers! However, Ward ain't too happy about the project, saying Beave should "share" the water with everybody, to which Beaver innocently asks, "Does the grocery man share his food for free?"
Good point!
What a story, well written by veteran Clifford Goldsmith, who also wrote for the DONNA REED SHOW. Look for popular dramatic actor Francis De Sales, who made many appearances on PERRY MASON, later a regular on DAYS OF OUR LIVES.
Norman Alden, in an early role, has a bit part as one of the water department workers.
Best of SEASON 1 EPISODE 7 remastered.
Barnaby Jones: Child of Love Child of Vengeance: Part 1 (1979)
BARNABY AND THE STRANGE CULT.
PART I
Excellent two part episode that had a lot of PR back in the day, because it was so topical. I agree with the last reviewer, writer Robert Lenski probably based the story on Synanon, which originally opened as a drug reb center in southern California in the 60s. A decade later there were explosive stories of men and women forced to live in a dangerous cult-like atmosphere, women even forced to shave their heads. In 1978, about a year before this episode, two members were arrested for putting a rattlesnake in the mail box of a lawyer who was investigating Synanon -- which blew the case wide open.
Here, Barnaby investigates a cult, a missing girl and murder, all leading to his detective license being yanked! Subsequently, JR has to jump in and actually joins the cult -- and is marked for death himself. Pat Hingle, one of the best character actors, plays Garrison, the crafty leader of the organization.
A force to be reckoned with.
This was the second tv credit for young Ilene Graff, playing Stephanie, and she's very good. Graff would later co-star in MR. BELVEDERE. Two super actresses guest star; Joanna Linville as Mimi and Marlyn Mason as Eve.
Not to be missed with this special cast. SEASON 7 EPISODE 22 and 23 remastered color CBS dvd box set. Released 2018.
Alfred Hitchcock Presents: Tea Time (1958)
COFFEE, TEA AND HOMICIDE?
Classis Hitchcock female duel of duels, and well cast with British actress Margaret Leighton, who I am sure Hitch recommended, and popular Marsha Hunt.
It all starts out at a fancy restaurant where Blanche (Hunt) asks Iris (Leighton) to simply give up her husband, played by Murray Matheson. She has been having an affair with the rich gentleman and wishes to live happily ever after! Of course, that would leave poor Iris in the dark, cutting off her money lifeline, right?
Oh yes, there's some tricks up everybody's sleeve in this one, the kind of Hitchcock story you will love. Wait for the ending --and all the NOISE -- without giving too much away. Surprisingly, this was written by Katherine Hite, who at the time was writing western material for GUNSMOKE. In the 70s she wrote for the WALTONS.
The dialogue between the ladies is the main attraction... and all smiles? At times, comes off as a witty stage play.
Look for comedic actor Fritz Feld as the maitre d. Best in these type of roles.
A tribute to Marsha Hunt, who was appearing in films well into her 80s. She passed in 2022 at age 104, one of the oldest living actresses from Hollywood's golden age.
SEASON 4 EPISODE 10 remastered Universal dvd box set. 15 hrs 30 mins. 6 dvds. Released 2008.
