Every Other Day Is Halloween (2009)
Entertaining glimpse into a grand tradition
Most of the fans of this film seem to be folks who remember Dick Dryszel from their youth. As someone who grew up in Canada with limited TV access after the golden-age of cable horror hosts, I had never heard of him. I still really enjoyed this film, including the second half about the explosion of internet horror hosts inspired by Dryszel (which some other reviewers seem to dislike). The doc itself is very low budget, with somewhat choppy editing and grainy interviews, but even that aesthetic quality plays into the low budget camp and independent spirit of its subjects. It won't be for everyone, but fans of community broadcast history and classic horror movies should definitely check it out.
La mansión de los Cthulhu (1992)
Don't believe the hate
Genuinely shocked how poorly this film is rated. Sure, it's not a sophisticated lovecraftian psychological yarn - but it is a totally entertaining over-the-top haunted house rollercoaster with more gothic atmosphere than you can shake a stick at. The great classic effects and gross-out makeup alone make it worth a watch and the legitimately excellent score pushes it along. Definitely will be rewatching this one.
Unseen Evil 2 (2004)
Thoroughly enjoyable, underrated modern B classic
I consider myself a bit of a connoisseur of terrible movies, so this isn't the first title I've seen from Sterling Entertainment and his ilk. It is, however, one of the best. Sure, it's painfully repetitive at times and not overly original, but it makes up for that with some truly (over) ambitious practical effects, legitimately fast-paced plot (which includes everything from ancient treasure to aliens to military shoot outs), ridiculously over-the-top characters and a perfect B-movie throw-away ending. If you're expecting something on-par with the work of Ridley Scott, obviously this is going to be a disappointment. But if you're looking for exactly what you SHOULD expect from a film called 'Alien 3000' produced on a micro budget, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
Pandamonium (2020)
Good mindless fun
It feels a bit like this whole movie was built on a weak and contrived pun to put a killer panda in its own slasher. And I'm totally okay with that! The cast did great, I dig the light social commentary and the fun lighting. The kills are nothing to write home about, but as others have stated, this is a very underrated - if not outstanding- indie horror romp that never takes itself too seriously. Don't be Bamboozled by all the bad ratings, it's far from unbearable.
The Wrong People (2017)
Entertaining & Unique
If you can embrace some of the stylistic quirks that come along with true underground indie films, I think you'll really dig this catchy little crime drama. Between the warped characters, small town vibe and some really effective music and cinematography, the film finds a tone and voice that is truly unique. It never takes itself too seriously, and nor does it use this approach to skimp on impact or substance. Most of the acting is actually quite strong; the heavy use of ADR throws it off, but also lends the film an El Mariachi kinda charm. If you can't get into this picture, you're watching it wrong!
