Studenac (2020)
5/10
An okay, but fatally flawed film that leaves a lot to desire
23 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This independent feature film, written, directed (and also starred in) by Borko Brajovic, released through his film studio Feniks Film, tells the story loosely based on one of the Balkan's folklore tales.

Here, we have a young man called Davor, practicing Tennis, aided by his coach (played by Brajovic), to prep himself up for Championship tour. It all goes well, until one day. He has heard of an urban legend about the haunted well around the woods and, out of curiosity, decides to visit it. One misstep of his begins 7 days of pain and suffering.

His family grows concerned about his disappearance and requests a warrant search for him. Meanwhile, Davor attempts to climb the well a few times (and fails), fights with the rats and experiences various hallucinations while conversing with a skeleton (assumed to be the lady that died in that well) until he was found, nearly dying.

As a cinema buff who has seen plenty of foreign indie films, this was a good start, except that there are things that don't have to be there.

First thing i would address is editing. I've seen a couple of editing errors, example being the very beginning shot starting to fade out, before cutting to the next shot.

Second one would be the use of music. Most of the indie films i've seen have little to no use of music and instead use silence to enhance the atmosphere. The music added in the scene where Davor rides his bike to the store was unnecessary.

The third thing is a comedic bit taking place in the kitchen, which came off as overacting, over the top and forced. I felt it completely derailed the atmosphere of the movie.

Fourth thing is the tennis practice, it's way too long and there is no need for overly dramatic music score. Sounds alone are just fine.

And lastly, the misuse of source material. I did use the term 'loosely', because we all see Davor's experience and we would like to know more about the lady in the well, the background behind her, etc. I think this was one of the things that were missing.

It is evident that Studenac is Borko's movie done with a passion, despite all the flaws that definitely prevent him from reaching potential success. If all the effort is actively taken to tie project tightly with the source material, then it could reach a cult status.

A rather flawed but heartfelt, intimate little movie with a poetic approach.
7 March 2020
Goran Paskaljevic is a Serbian director, probably known for his darkly comic Cabaret Balkan aka. Bure Baruta, has come out with his latest full length feature, this time shot in Italy, featuring Italian and Middle Eastern actors and spoken in Italian. The whole premise of the movie is focusing on refugee children who have lost their parents get lost in Europe and this movie is about one of them.

The movie focuses on Valeria and Paolo, a married couple grieving over their loss of their deceased son, Marco. Meanwhile, a refugee named Mohammed roams the streets alone after losing his parents and is suddenly picked up by the childless couple, who decided to adopt him against the wishes of their own people, therefore had to go through the xenophobic stigma, or as we put it, "the fog".

The movie does a good job at tackling issues on the refugee crisis and xenophobia, but there's less clarity when it comes to mental health issues, especially about Valeria and her depression. Besides, the movie is technically good.

Despite the Fog is a rather flawed but heartfelt, intimate little movie with a poetic approach. If only a little more clarity is added on previously mentioned subject matter with a bit more substance to it, then it would be more than enough.

Involution (2018)
5/10
A seemingly interesting idea whose execution is deeply flawed
1 August 2018
This is one of the films i have chosen to see from FEST 18 in Belgrade. The idea of this movie seemed interesting to me, thus making my decision to see it.

'Involution', an english language European film directed by a Russian director/cinematographer Pavel Khvaleev, backed up by German production, unfolds an apocalyptic story where the entire world turns back on Darwin's theory on Evolution. The main leads, Hamming and Liv, a couple witnessing their future turn on its head and must save themselves from this apocalypse.

Honestly, i thought it wasn't that bad, yet it could've been done a lot better. It is not an easy task to make a challenging movie under a tight budget. The acting is rather cheesy, forced and cartoonish (especially the Cain character). The plot in some parts did not make any sense. However, the cinematography is absolutely stunning, especially in the dream sequences.

I would give this movie 5/10. Again, it wasn't bad but it wasn't great. It could've done better.

Combustion (2013)

Awful.
1 April 2015
I've seen this movie at school and i just fell asleep. There's just nothing. No action, no important plots, just typical soap opera and people f**king each other in multiple scenes. It's all Fast & Furious minus the action and more soft-core porn done multiple times throughout the movie. This should be trashed and called one of the Europe's worst films. The acting, camera direction and directing are okay, though the plot and the action are the problem, especially with too much scenes of soft-core porn. What does that make it look like? Spanish Emmanuelle with the mix of Fast & The Furious?

I'd recommend you to watch something else instead of this P.O.S.

The Silent (2014)

Scam!

This is not a real film made by Arya Ghavamian. This is originally made by M Dot. Strange. It's 100% Heart String Marionette only with minor changes such as cutting off dialogs and adding a few frames. I can't believe that you'd credit yourself as a producer, editor and an animator, which you have nothing to do with M Dot's work. You even tried to cover your own soul by lying that it's yours and trying to make money off of M Dot for your own sake, Arya. Yet he and his fans have managed to get rid of the movie and banned you from the Cinequest festival and replaced Heart String Marionette instead, which is good news! However, to those who are curious about this 'film' of his? Don't even t.h.i.n.k. about seeing the film. Watch Heart String Marionette and his other films instead.

It's an okay film, but almost everything is missing.

I just stumbled upon this film on the TV set and i was really wondered of watching that one out. Sure the 70's settings are nicely done, but unfortunately the story doesn't add anything new to it. I feel that it needs something to completely fulfill our satisfaction. There is no overall humor in this movie, though there are some good pitch black humor into it, but it's not enough. there could be some more evil things included in that film, like Happiness or Sitcom, for example. Acting in some characters are okay, a bit dry. this film in no particular ways, have disappointed me after all.
