Werewolf: The Beast Among Us (2012)
All Action and No Talk.
I really don't understand the latest craze with classic beasts of horror. For some reason, they feel they have to sex it up; that's not a problem in and of itself, but it's usually done with zero substance. This film is a prime example of such a laissez-faire approach. Still, even film-makers have to pay the bills, I suppose.
Furthermore, this film doesn't even bother to excuse itself. Within the first fifteen minutes, you will know exactly what is going on, and there will be no mystery as to who the beast is among them.
What this film does have is a lot of action; so if you can turn a deaf ear to the crass dialogue and a storyline that randomly darts about, it's not a bad ride.
Unfortunately, I was paying attention, so I gave this film a 3/10.
Butterfly on a Wheel (2007)
Yet another moralistic morass.
The film is quite well-made; it's the story that lowers the rating for me. I am usually quite surprised by stories of this type; but the twist became rather obvious early on in the film. Alright, there was still a touch of mystery, as I did not know why this was happening, but I certainly got a clear impression of what was going on.
I'm also fed-up of the unrealistic approach many films like this take; sure it can be a fun ride, but I'm afraid this one failed to be fun enough to make up for the mediocre plot-line of "revenge of the spouses".
On the positive side, I did find myself rooting for the small man bringing down the arrogant, unfeeling corporate climber; even if the "small man" was his spurned wife.
