Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)
Mission Impossible 2: Sons of Liberty
This movie was like
Mission Impossible 2, Metal gear solid 2, Uncharted 2, Tomorrow Never Dies (2nd Pierce Brosnan James Bond) combined.
Ethan must team together with the woman he is now handcuffed with while driving the James Bond car, fight a ninja and figure out how to disable the evil ai which soon will control the world but not before jumping out of the train car dangling from top of the cliff just in time.
+ Positives
I liked that they brought back Kittridge and started to touch a little bit on Ethans backstory pre IMF.
Lorne Balfe delievers an ok soundtrack and the sound mix during the train sequence had punch.
- Negatives
In Fallout they started to touch on sending Ethan more down the path of grey morality and making it "darker and grittier". I felt like this was gone and everbody was sadly reduced to 2d characters. Except maybe one little gesture towards the end. Ethan also felt overpowered once again like in MI2. It was the little moments in Fallout which made it so good, showing Ethan as a normal human being, struggling and vulnerable, failing the jump, not beating up 5 guys in a row with no effort but actually struggling to take down even one guy.
The evil ai plot felt a little out of place for MI movie, I hope the next final movie will make it work.
I believed that the film would end on a huge cliffhanger making me want to see the next asap, as this is part 1, but the ending felt really anticlimatic. I guess expectations has once again wrecked a movie for me.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023)
Meh
+
The action was good, the villian was good.
The intro scene was pretty atmospheric.

The deaged Indy looked best in the first shot we see him in, its the shot from the trailer but a little better, maybe because of the better bitrate. Later it looked not as good, some shots were ok, some looked like a low resolution ps4 game. I guess the first shot is the most important one to sell the effect tho. Maybe it looks better If you see it in non imax. Its cool that this kind of technology exits but it is not perfected yet. In Crystal skull, they hid the face when it was a too complicated shot to digitally reface the stunt double. Here they that too but in some shots they used cgi and it didnt really blend well all the time.
The soundtrack was ok but like in SW Ep 9 there wasnt really any memorable parts. You recognized some reused tunes here and there from other John Williams scores.
Maybe Im slow, but why didnt they go back to the river where they dropped the artifact in the beginning?

I feel like Indy was underutilized in this movie, in favor for his god daughter. He didnt really do much except for maybe a bit in the opening prologue that made me go "Indy frack yeah" while the theme plays. Atleast Crystal skull had that.
There was a line that the villian says when talking to Indy, among the lines of "people dont care about men like us anymore". Was this some kind of meta thing? This sums up the problem I had with this movie:
I watch Indy because I care. I want to see Indy be the rock star, he is a bit older now which they acknowledged, so maybe he cant physically do everything anymore, but he is older and should be more experienced. I watched it because I wanted to see Indy as the hero, not his god daughter.
It wasnt wrong seeing Indy as the grumpy old grandpa but at the end I felt like he should have been utilized more as the hero.
Svart krabba (2022)
Weird
I havent read the book so Im only reviewing the movie here.
Alot of the time the characters motivation and thoughts behind their actions were very unclear.
Why did that character even do this and that?
Maybe its more clear in the book, I dont know.
The production design and set pieces were pretty good for a swedish movie. Alot of money seem to have been put into this movie and the cgi looks good. Its a shame they didnt use practical blood squibs.
Things like this is typical for swedish movies.
They achieve maybe 90% as a whole consistent experience on par with hollywood standards.
But one small scene is edited weirdly, lacks camera coverage etc. One scene there when you suddenly cant hear what they are saying and cgi blood suddenly puts you out even tho the rest of the scene is good.
I could enjoy this movie. But in the international competition this movie wont reach higher rating from me.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Lets be honest.
Lets be honest here
A lot of what makes this movie good is based on nostalgia and fan service. The action was nothing extra, on multiple occasions I had a hard time of keeping up with what was actually going on beside "they fight".
The soundtrack in the mcu movies have always been kind of unnoticeable. Here they had a lot of opportunities to bring in the old tunes but I felt that the music never really kicked in
The bluetooth controlled arms?
Doc Ock coming to terms with his mistakes in Spider-Man 2 and overpowering the evil AI with pure will power was the coolest thing.
Here the AI in Peters suit hacked Doc Ocks robotic arms, put them both down and then restrained the arms.
This is the real AI to worry about.
Overall the movie was entertaining but a lot of things felt rushed. Bringing back the old guys was a great move I will give them that, this is also what raises the score for me.
Gone Girl (2014)
Good movie.
Good movie.
Probably would have rated it 8 but didnt get to see Rosamund Pike nude and instead only got to see Ben Affleck and Neil Patrick Harris.
There's some wood for you, b****.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Be careful what you wish for.
You might aswell just get it.
It feels like they kind of painted themselves into a corner in the 2 last movies. This movie felt like they just said "You know what? Lets give the fans exactly what they wanted!" And the fans dont know that what they want doesnt make a good movie.
This movie felt a bit like a fan fic or some anime. (The final battle between Rey and Palpatine + the ending anyone?)
You know that bad feeling you got when Disney first bought Star Wars. This movie is what you imagined back then.
+ The sound effects of the lightsaber humming was good.
+ I was actually kept at the edge of my seat, I wanted to know what happend next. I barely touched my snacks, so the pacing was good like an action movie. A different pacing wouldnt have served the film they were making here.
- Some of the fanbase. "Rian Johnson touched Mark's shoulder, how dareeee he?!" kind of fanbase. This has gotten out of hand.
Skyscraper (2018)
Could have been better.
This movie could have been better if not for the PG-13 rating awkward cutting.
You struggle sometimes to understand what is happening.
6 for entertaining atleast.
The Rock (1996)
Weird feeling.
I couldnt find anything perticular wrong with this movie. But it wasnt really great either. It was entertaining though.
Overlord (2018)
Generic movie
Lots of recognizable tropes in this movie.
This could have been a video game story.
The sound design and sound effects were kind a cool.
Very generic plot but it is enjoyable if you can handle that.
Pearl Harbor (2001)
Cool action scenes.
Cool action scenes but the rest is on kind of average summer block buster level. The cinematography is interesting to study. I find a lot in this movie interesting to study in regards to how it was made, so that is a good thing about this movie.
Brazil (1985)
Surprisingly great movie.
Had no idea what to expect when I decided to watch this movie. I searched for good dystopian movies and this showed up. It was surprisingly great! The concept connected very well to me. This movie has a lot of good jokes and gags that seemingly aren't very funny at face value, but after a minute or so (or after you re-watch the whole movie) actually turns out to be very funny!
There are some visually interesting shots, and I actually cared for the main character when I watched this movie. Something that occurs rarely at this level for me.
Recommended if you like dystopian sci-fi. You know what, watch it anyways.
The Terminator (1984)
Tension build up on a higher level.
The Terminator is a great movie according to me. The tension build up for the scenes are executed extremely well. The movie hints with similar but subtle choices of scene blocking, and soundtrack at different parts of the movie to create a form of dramatic tension.
The story is interesting and the symbolism that lies under it. The symbolism can be found both in visual gags and in the story concept. Example: Bill Paxton's character has a tire track mark as a tattoo on his face. This mirrors the scene from the future war were a Machine Tank drives over a stack of human skulls. And what happens? Bill's character gets figuratively driven over by the machines. (He gets killed by The Terminator).
The visual effects works for all but maybe one scene. The close up of The Terminator's face just before he puts on his famous sunglasses (to hide his now visible robot eye), looks kind of too dummy looking. The rest of the effects works great. The context helps some of the effects. Like that the Terminator skeleton's walking style is a bit weird. They added a concept of which that the Terminator was damaged in the foot. Which in universe makes the weird walking style more appealing.
The movie follows the Chekhov's gun principle in many ways. There is nothing wrong with filler details though. This movie is good at planting such Chekhov objects. Some require multiple viewings to notice.
Things the movie did right: The plot, both overall and subplots. The love story. The soundtrack. The technique used for tension building. The less is more editing. Multiple minor gags that I find entertaining. Hidden symbolism.
Things the movie could have done better: The close up of the dummy Terminator face could have been shot differently for more belief. They should have kept the deleted scene at the end.
10/10
Alien: Covenant (2017)
Good summer blockbuster.
Alien Covenant is a good summer blockbuster movie according to me. It had a fair amount of nods to the previous Alien movies, and also some to Ridley Scott's other works.
The visual/special effects in the movie are what you can expect from a summer blockbuster. It looked like they added some extra grain to some shots in the movie, in old school sci-fi fashion.
Some scenes are predictable. Some are less predictable. I would say that if you consider yourself good at spotting potential outcomes of events in movies. This film is not that twisting. But for average viewers, you might be surprised a couple of times watching this movie.
It is not a new masterpiece, but definitely an above average good summer blockbuster worth watching if you like sci-fi horror.
