Cowboy Bebop (2021)
Cancelled before it had a chance...
A strong start. If it had received the second season it deserved it could have gone on to be a classic. I especially liked John Cho's interpretation of Spike.
Neko no ongaeshi (2002)
Really really good, a minor masterpiece.
Very original, genuine and surprising. Cleverly written and funny, not marred by fan-service or graphic violence. No worms whatsoever. I'd very much like a sequel, what adventures are the Barron and Ronaldo Moon having? I need to know...
Môsô dairinin (2004)
Certainly amongst the best TV anime...
... Satoshi Kon, proving once again, that he had astonishing talent and imagination. You'll know right from the title sequence, that you're in for something very special. Not to be missed.
Yokohama kaidashi kikô (1998)
A masterpiece...
...something completely different, strange, compelling. People in the West are put off by the anime style, but if you look past that you'll be rewarded by a very different experience.
Kiss Me Deadly (1955)
Stunning, a masterpiece.
Starts off a bit generic but the payoff will stun you. Don't be put off by the lack of famous actors, everybody does a fine job, but the film is the star-
Dune (2021)
Disappointing
I haven't read the book so I don't care if it's accurate but it's a dull film with un-engaging characters some of the special effects are unconvincing and the music is overwrought.
Foundation (2021)
Really weak with uninvolving characters.
I haven't read the books so I don't care whether it follows them or not. However I didn't find the characters engaging. Also the whole thing was a bit like those dramas they make for 'young adults', Hunger Games and so on.
Hachi: A Dog's Tale (2009)
Don't watch this, watch the Japanese version...
Hachiko was a real dog. This isn't his story. The Japanese version is nearer to the facts and a less manipulative film. Hachikô monogatari is a superb perod piece.
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004)
Grossly underrated...
This is a great action film with a unique visual aesthetic. It should be rated much higher.
The Ghastly Love of Johnny X (2012)
Nearly as good as an Ed Wood movie...
...but not quite. Also the black and white filming looks like video, not Plus X.
Frank (2014)
Terrible, misleading and an insult to Chris Sievey
How this got made I'll never know. It's NOT about Frank Sidebottom in spite of the name and papier-mâché head. I felt cheated and insulted.
