Tries to be arthouse meets religion with undertones of Space Odyssey.
23 March 2023
When a production team try this hard to impress you with how clever they can be.....they fail. How many times can a director use flash-backs for a few seconds before that technique becomes irritating? For me the answer is, a huge amount less than in this film.

I read the summary on IMDB before watching this, but that was not enough information. I should have said that the core story is totally lost in the "dream-world" drifting of slowly rotating pictures of the galaxy and fuzzy lights with emotional orchestral background music.

I watched this film in a community hall....there was a lot of fidgeting going on and I was not the only person to leave before the end. I think the film was trying to be an examination of the process of making sense of life and reconciliation. A good purpose for a film. A pretentious, tedious delivery.

The least credible film ever made
7 March 2023
The only credible thing in this film is the concept that some agents are double-agents and people in that business are frequently not who the seem.

Beyond that, it's pretty much a roughly 50kg woman who repeatedly takes on 90 kg military-trained men and always wins! Yea-right! And even though a thousand bullets were supposedly fired at her during this flick, not one of them was on-target! Darn they need to up their target training And don't worry, despite the non-stop action, supposedly day-after-day, even though she gets a few blood stains on her, that mascara never smudges even a little bit.

The key take-away is that the joint Chief of Staffs should fire everybody, appoint Jolie and save a few billion dollars.

great idea, good actors, well filmed, terrible directing
2 August 2022
Honestly, I am not enough of a film-buff to know if it was the directing that transformed a good idea into a painful watch, or was that done at the story-boarding/scene definition stage. Perhaps a combination of them both. Anyway, either way, I have to be honest and say I could not take it any more past 16 minutes.

Ted Lasso (2020–2023)

Crass, zero credibility and some of the worst acting ever
24 April 2022
It starts off with jokes about masturbation and testicles in the first few minutes and stays at that level. I´ve been a captive audience for a while due to being in a hospital for months, thanks to Netflix I´ve survived, sometimes discovering pleasant surprises. This was not one of them. There has to some credibility to to a reasonable proportion of the characters for a film or series to be watchable. Same rule applies to the storyline - at least from my perspective. Ted Lasso has neither. Rock-bottom script, acting and storyline. I could not quite make it to the end of the first episode. Thankfully there is so much better material out there.

A movie about love
9 January 2022
What a gem - the acting, the setting in beautiful Valencia and perfect background music. But above all it is about the resilience that true love permits. If you have ever supported a loved one through tough times, this movie will go straight to your heart.

Cringeworthy
11 November 2021
There are many high-quality films produced these days - this is certainly not one of them. Scripting is flat, acting is flat, direction, dull.

Then there is the question of the big hoax called "spiritism". After the devastation of the First World War and an especially deadly flu pandemic in 1918, people were desperate to know what happened after death. The journal "Scientific American" organised a contest to once and for all differentiate between scientific fact and fiction. Long story short: Spiritism was shown to be the hoax of the desperate that is was. It should have died a natural death then....but Brazilian film-makers seem to think it still sells films. Sad.

Gripping truth of the best of humanity vs the worst.
9 June 2021
Director, Anthony Maras excelled in every way - as did the whole cast - particularly Dev Patel, Alex Pinder, Armie Hammer and Nazanin Boniadi. This is in the top-10 list of films that I have seen in my 57 years. I cannot think of a film that more perfectly contrasts how good some people are and how bad some others are. I was astonished to see some 1/10 reviews - but I suspect the reflect the writers´political/religious views rather than the quality of this film. So please judge for yourself.

A Few Brave Men
23 May 2021
This is a film well worth watching because it is a story little known outside of India of one of the most significant people in the history of bringing down evil empires.

England´s narrative regarding their exit from 400 years of military offupation of India is almost exclusively MK Gandhi-centric. In reality there were several other incredible leaders who were not in the Congress party and not aligned to MK Gandhi. A film that shows this reality is long overdue.

Director Rajkumar Santoshi is definitely one of the best bollywood directors, but I guess you maybe have to be Indian to appreciate the songs and the Indian style of directing and acting. The sets and the photography were impressive by any standards. Though I am not a fan of the way bollywood depicts film characters, it has to be said that there was somd impressive acting talent: Sushant Singh who played Sukhdev and Ajay Devgn who played Bhagat Singh clearly are talented.

This film shows English brutality very realistically, it is not an easy watch - particularly the cold-blooded assasination of 400 peaceful civilians at Jallianwala Bagh depicted at the begining of this historically significant film. For me, the key scene was MK Gandhi showing that he could not care less about Bhagat Singh when he was dealing with English negotiators. MK could have make Bhagat Singh´s release a pre-condition, but he choose not to. Kudos to this flim´s production company for addressing this significant truth.

If history and truth interest you, this is a must-see. Thanks to Netflix for having this film and getting the history of Indian independence out there globally.

A 3 hour summary of 3 game-changing global thinkers
2 May 2021
Bettany Hughes presents an engaging rewiew of Buddhismm, Socratic method and Confucianism- The series looks at the historical contect of these three great leaders and also distills the core philosophies into their core essence so that the viewer can appreciate them as much as possible. Ignore the critics - judge for yourself!

Hidden humor meets hidden history.
23 April 2021
I know I have just watched a top-class film when I find myself reaching to the internet to see if I can verify how close the story was to reality - according to relatively credible sources. If Smithsonian and Wikipedia are to be believed, then this acting masterpiece is more than close enough to the truth to retain adequate credibility. I admit to be pleasantly surprised at the non-racist mindset of queen Victoria - and not in the slightest surprised at the insecure, hypocritical, racist mindsets of those who surrounded her. The scenery and filming were impeccable, the attention to detail equally impressive. Perhaps the biggest surprise was just how comedic it was. To think that the truth of this amazing relationship was so effectively hidden until 2010! That alone makes this film well worth watching.

The slowest moving, most tedious film ever.
3 March 2021
I tried to stay to the end, but gave up after almost an hour. Truly a waste of some good acting talent - particularly Hopkins. Even though I have lowered my standards in this Covid19 era, nothinig short of a gun to my head could make me finish off this tedious nonsence. It tried to give itself credability by tieing itself into historical events of significance, but the tediousness of it all made me feel like the diriector was trying to cheat the audience.

More relevant than ever.
8 February 2021
It caught my attention just because it was set in Durham, nc. But the film exceeded all expectations because its not just history - the sentiments are as real now as they were then. Apart from brilliant acting, this film stands out from the crowd because it shows the process of resolution between two opposing sides so very well. If there is any part of you that thinks "peace is better than division and mistrust" then this is the film to watch. Oh yea - some cool cars and soundtracks from the era too!

Excellent

I would have given a 10/10 if the pace was a little faster. But overall, a compelling watch - and certainly a surprise to me that John Travolta can take on a serious acting role. Some of Hollywood´s best at that time are in this film - Kathleen Qunlann and Robert Duvall just to name a few. It makes the moral case for the existence of the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) like no other film.

One of the top few films I have ever seen
21 August 2020
The Patriot was 100% engaging from start to finish. Outstanding performances from Mel Gibson, Heath Ledger - in fact everybody! The old revolutionary war scenes and battles make this movie an action film - which normally is not my genre. The acting in this movie was truly top-end, as was every single aspect from scripting to cinamatography.

Cute, engaging, famly-watchable rom-com

I´m not a dog-lover but I loved this film. Story was nothing special - but it acted as a vehicle for decent acting and plenty of laughs. No swearing, no sex-scenes, nobody shot to death - just a film with a few positive messages and plenty of laughs.

If blackfacing is, bad, so is Irishfacing
17 June 2020
It´s an ok. soap, despite it´s incredible predictable outcome. But here is what grinds my gears: They make reference to their Irishness in every episode but the actors are not Irish. So if being Caucasian and putting black people out of a job whilst wearing boot-polish is not respectful or appropriate to the black community, why is doing the equivalent to the Irish community by Hallmark? I´m honestly fed up with Canadian and American film production companies' truly awful imitations of Irish accents and caricatures of Irishness. The actors are of German, Finnish, unknown Canadian and other nationalities, but none is Irish. It also helps to appreciate mediocre C&W music - it features in Chesapeake Shores.

You Can't Take My Daughter (2020 TV Movie)

Compelling, emotionally draining, brilliant & shocking.
1 April 2020
One of the top 10 films I have ever seen. I often find myself frustrated at bad pacing (usually too slow) with many movies - not this one. Lyndsy Fonseca is perfect. It would have been so predictable for the lead actress to over-act to dramatise the situation, and thankfully that trap was not fallen into. The surprise for me, was not that the insanity of American law as it pertains to rape and custody, but the acting of Kirstie Alley - the mother. Wow!

Raw, compelling, empathizing history-telling.
1 March 2020
So much about this film is so good: The very fact that at last there is a relatively big-screen depiction of the brutality of the genocide in Ireland in 1847 is probably the best thing. the Leonardo DiCaprio style directing seemed very appropriate. The cinematography was oscar-worthy and the under-acting spot-on for a film of this type. The only thing that stops me giving it a 10/10 is, why did they not tell a story that was real? It would have made the film so much better. Still more than worth a watch though.

Perfection
5 February 2020
Everything about this movie is perfect! I scannned a few other reviews before I wrote this .... they pretty much said it all, but I did not see a mention of how wonderful the music was - I made a list of songs to get hold of based on this movie! I guess the story felt "extra-real" for me becuase I was bought up in a similar "company town" environment where the expectation was to "be a man and follow in your father´s footsteps". That pressure is so strong its hard to beleive. Thankfully my farther was against that and encouraged me to break free. If you recognise that kind of scenario, you 100% have to see this film. Even if not, it´s still an awesome film.

This film is an attempt at an art-house movie that fell on its face
26 January 2020
Beyond tedious and weird. The book is infinitely better. I went to see this with a group of friends and unanimously we considered it a boring waste of time. The cinematography was reasonable, the actors are good, but the overall production proved you can take a good book and turn it into a tedious film which over-focuses on the wrong sub-plots and scenes and omits what probably should have been included. What makes this particularly frustrating, is that the geo-period of history it was set in was so intriguing - a lost opportunity!

More than a great film
26 January 2020
This film is a deeply beautuful look at true love and integrity. Few films can bring a tear to my eyes - but this does. Not in a hollywood/Mills & Boon way, but it a true story that is never for one second overacted. It is also worth watching for anybody who wants to know about Indonesia. I have been there several times but I certainly learned some modern history worth knowing. There were a couple of bits of editing that were not quite right, but everything else was so perfect, it really did not matter. Enjoy!

Real history, humans balancing power and duty, true love....it´s all there!
28 October 2019
Thank you Netflix - i enjoyed every minute of it! And thankfully it was a two hour film, they did not fall into the trap of dragging it out over a mini-series or a three-and-a-half-hour epic endurance test! Everything was spot-on - acting, staging, scripting and research for historical accuracy, but if one thing truly stands out, its the cinamatography - absolutely stunning! I am not a war-movie person, but I have respect for film-makers who do justice to history - and they truly did that.

Sardar (1993)

A great film for a history enthusiast
11 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
It has a "raw" style of presentation - a kind of documentary film. I liked seeing original footage from the 40s slotted into the 1990s flim - it gave me a sence that this is a very factually correct docu-film. Acting was under-stated and respectful of the incredibly devoted Sarder whose world-class diplomatic skills prevented a disintegration on the day of freedom that could so easily have been the outcome. A failure of the film was to show how Sardar Patel was so anti-nepotism - in total contrast to Nerhu. Diserves a wider audiance - this was world-changing history!
