Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024)
Room for improve, but not as good as the animated show
The pacing is a little rushed despite the fact that the length of the show is about as long as the original. The best parts of it were when the live action show did its own thing, and the worst parts were the references to the original. Some of the acting is good, some of it isn't. I think it's a fun fantasy show but as a live action remake of the legendary masterpiece it's alright. However, a lot of my complaints could be improved in the second season if they get greenlight. The weaker acting is mostly the child actors who are inexperienced. With more experience they could improve. Also, too much exposition, but in the second season it would be less necessary for new fans so they would cut it out. The pacing could be improved with more than 8 episodes, I think having at least 10 episodes could help the show. Certainly in Hollywood these 5-10 episode hour long movie like shows are not helping anyone. Not the production team or the audience. It's definitely an improvement from the movie, but for sure flawed.
Wish (2023)
A movie kids will enjoy but nobody else will
Disney always made movies for everyone, they just happened to be family friendly movies. This is the first Disney animated movie that I think is aimed at only children. The paper thin plot, goofy songs, and toilet humor shows that it's for kids. Now I think that young kids will enjoy this movie but you probably won't I think that this movie shows how obsessed Disney has become with creating franchises. They want to make their next Toy Story or Frozen only. As a result their movies have become painfully safe and formulaic. Wish does nothing wrong and checks all the boxes. This movie is supposed to be their first attempt at the 2D/3D animation style but it looks it's just regular 3D but unfinished. They need a Genndy Tartakovsky, Jorge Gutierrez, or Guillermo Del Toro type of creative visionary at WDAS. This movie is safe, corporate, and worst of all its forgettable.
Star vs. the Forces of Evil (2012)
It could have been better if it was longer
The show explores real world issues like colonialism, genocide, racism, government corruption/instability, and conquest but not in a preachy way. The show has great characters & villain including one of the best villains in animation ever.
I really liked this show, I even bought the book of spells but it does have a lot of problems that drag it down.
Star is annoying but in an endearing way. She's a great protagonist and she stands on her own. Marco on the other hand is incredibly boring. He doesn't stand on his own as a character and he's the deuteragonist. There are only a few episodes where he's actually interesting. If you had cut him out, I think the story would have been better without him.
Another problem is the shipping, it took too much of the plot and was not handled well.
I don't really mind ships and I'm not upset by who ended up with who, the problem was that it distracted from the overall story. The episode might be tackling racism and then as a subplot there's relationship drama??? It was a waste of time imo to focus that much on shipping.
Also, the final season started off really well and then halfway it just fell apart. A lot of dumb writing decisions and a rush conclusion.
At times the show felt really rushed with some plotlines, they also focused on too much at once. I think if the show had more seasons it could have been better.
Dead End: Paranormal Park (2022)
It's alright, not worth your time unless you're bored
I watched both seasons, and I have to say I like the show a lot more than I thought I would but it's not really good. I think the voice acting is great, the background art is nice, and the character designs of the non human characters are really well drawn. I like most of the characters, my favorite being Pauline.
What I don't like is the main character Barney. He's entitled, annoying, and 99% of his character is about him being trans. I think diversity and lgbt representation is great but that shouldn't be the only thing about a character. The thing is, he's the only character that's like this, the other characters are lgbt and from diverse backgrounds but they're not one dimensional like Barney is.
Norma is bisexual and autistic but there's more to her than that. She's passionate about working at the park, she's really into solving the mysteries at her workplace, etc. She's more than just being bi and autistic, she's got a personality, interests and struggles.
Barney's entire character is "I am trans, and because I am trans I felt like I didn't belong anywhere. But now I found a place where I can belong" He lashes out to his loved ones and is rewarded for his entitlement by everyone bending over backwards for him.
Because Barney is so one-dimensional, all the episodes about him are really boring. The show is much more interesting whenever he's not on screen, personally, the show would have been better if Norma was the protagonist.
With the episodes, I feel like the show would have been better if each episode was 11 minutes long instead over 20 minutes. The episodes aren't interesting enough to justify the length, this show was definitely more suited for the 11 minute format.
I don't like the character designs for the human characters (except for Pauline), they're ugly and bland. I suppose that's not a big deal but it definitely takes some time to get used to, especially the snowman noses all the characters have.
Helluva Boss (2019)
Season 2 is a waste of time, nothing like the season 1
Season 1 of Helluva Boss was really good, an episodic light hearted workplace comedy with bits of drama mixed in and lots of great action sequences.
We see how Blitzo grows to become a better boss and friend to Moxxie. We see that Stolas despite being a lustful pervert who usually doesn't take things seriously, really care about his daughter and wants to make her happy. We see Moxxie become more self-confident as an employee and open about his feelings of insecurity to his wife Millie. .
It was silly, violent, and sometimes emotional, but overall a fun first season.
Season 2: Remember how initially Stolas was a lustful pervert who treated Blitzo as a plaything but also as a form of an escape from his unhappy marriage. Then as gradually time went by he started to notice Blitzo beyond and wanted to be in a real relationship with him. Guess what none of that is real.
Stolas is actually an innocent fluff owl boy who was always in love with the deviously handsome Blitzo since childhood. He's a victim who could do no wrong and is just waiting for his prince charming to save him. The real big bad is stella.
Also the show has decided to cut down on the comedy (which was 90% of the show in season 2) and instead focus on stolitz melodrama.
We already did an Octavia/Stolas episode back in season 1, let's do it again! But instead of Stolas apologizing for making his daughter unhappy and promising not to abandon her, we'll make Loona justify Stolas' actions and say "he's your dad, he's trying".
Remember that massive fight Blitzo and Stolas had at the end of season 1, we can't let that get in the way of stolitz. They need to be cute, flirty, and in love. So let's forget about all that, and have them flirt casually for half the episode. (without a hint of awkwardness between them)
Season 2 ripped out everything that made the first season good and what was left behind was a soulless fanfic-like story.
