Nu astepta prea mult de la sfârsitul lumii (2023)
Slow, satisfying burn that I didn't want to end
Wow. I just finished watching this film and could not get enough. It is a slow burn to start off but as I watched I found myself getting pulled in. This is the story of an overworked woman, who travels from place to place capturing videos of the survivors of nearby, workplace accidents. The most compelling story awards the family a cash prize and commercial spot about workplace safety. In the end, the participants and the rigors of the process are skewered answering questions about capitalism, voyuerism, status, and the results of hardwork. The main character is an endurance champion. The writer and director brought to my mind Proust, capturing the day to day human condition in such a realistic way. I did not want this movie to end. Hopefully there's a 5 hour directors cut out there.
The Forgiven (2021)
Poorly adapted
I really enjoyed the book. This adaptation was so poorly done, I didn't last 20 minutes. I don't understand the script changes. I think they were trying to provide some background but the tension between Chasten and Finnes just fizzled.
I don't know if it was filmed in Morocco or not but the director but the director missed many opportunities to bring the desert into the movie. The staging of the mansion and the actual party felt forced. Noone was having a good time. This contrasts with the book which was hedonistic without being overtly so. It's hard to express how disappointed I was without giving out spoilers.
The English (2022)
Shockingly bad - turned off 20 minutes
Forced performances in a contrived script. We didn't have the patience to try to parse meaning out of this. Excellent cast but terrible plot.
The opening sequence set a poor start but then the first couple of scenes gave us hope that this could be a good series. It went downhill quickly after though. The writers expect us to sit through 10 episodes to figure this one out. We just looked at eachother and said "no." Its too bad because many of the actors are very good. I don't want to give anything away.
We just watched Karen Pirie. Much better. Acting, plot, heavy dose of verisimilitude. That is what we expect from the UK.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Embarrassing
Great writers still need editors. One great movie followed by now 3 failures. This should have never been made. Fake drama. Revisiting a ton of forgotten characters. This movie is completely weighed down by the past.
