You Hurt My Feelings (2023)
The real star of this movie is...
...not Julia Louis Dreyfus. It is Michaela Watkins. She steals every scene she is in. Her quirky snarks and well-timed delivery really stuck out to me.
Overall it was a comedic drama about how we sugar-coat our real feelings when talking to our loved ones, and where to draw the line between being honest and being considerate. I appreciated how that theme was carried through on a few different age levels in the movie, and how age dictates how honestly blunt a person can be and get away with it.
I thought the movie was good. I love Julia Louis Dreyfus but I simply did not love the somewhat needy character that she played. We all know someone like that, tho, right?, so it felt very relatable.
Michaela Watkins, though, was too funny. I hope to see her in more and more roles in the future.
You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah (2023)
Pretty funny in some parts
In digging through all of the mindless listings these days, sometimes you find a small little diamond in the rough. That was this movie. Very easy to watch and some pretty funny scenes. Yes, it is a typical angsty teen comedy with "drama" that young teens go through. But it also had some pretty good messages or storylines about things that matter in alot of families. (faith, loyalty to friends, getting along with parents, etc.)
I happen to like Adam Sandler in his more recent films, so maybe I am biased. But anyway, I like that he used his family members in the film, and his daughters both did great jobs on their roles. I think they could have found a better actor to play the mom role (sorry, Idina fans).
Sarah Sherman was hilarious and stole every scene she was in.
The Equalizer 3 (2023)
Woah, lots of blood
Surprised at how much more violent and entirely more bloody than the first two Equalizer movies in this trilogy. Would I recommend this movie? Absolutely not. The plot leaves alot to be desired. And it didn't seem like there was much dialogue. And it moves pretty slowly. Lots of "thinking" scenes which was sort-of misplaced. But they are heavy on the blood and gore and shoot-em-ups. Definitely a slow-burn type of build-up to get the audience worked up and swayed to Denzel's savior side. Whatever. Yes, scenic views of the quaint little Italian village and cute villagers. But just entirely too much gore and blood for my taste. Disappointed they would put this out as a "blockbuster" or whatever. Save your money. Stream it in a few months when it is available.
