De Oost (2020)
First half of the movie is a 8, second half a 6.
The movie starts off great. Not many historical flaws and a very balanced execution between the different perspectives. Sadly, the second part of the movie takes a Tarantino-esq turn in tone and story (like Inglorious Basterds) and this almost ruined the movie for me. Either commit to one style or the other. Furthermore, the second half is extremele unbalanced and depict the Dutch Special Forces troops as coldblooded murders basically the whole time. If you look at the actual historical facts about Westerling, you'd see that alot of nuance is left off the table. The ending is also very strange and basically pure fiction. This wouldn't be a bad thing because Tarantino did this with Inglorious Basterds aswell and that worked out great. However, Tarantino maintained his tone and story throughout the whole movie. This movie does not. Which makes it feel very disjointed.
Speaking of acting, visuals, story and music:
The acting is great (for Dutch standards) and the visuals and music are also very good. The story is very well done (for the first half) but then descends into fiction for a big part. Without spoiling it, yes there were alot of war crimes being committed at that time and place, but a whole lot of other stuff was left out. The second half felt like a montage of war crimes by the Dutch special forces without any actual story being told.
All in all, the movie is still good. The first half especially is very much worth the watch. I would still recommend it, just be warned about historical inaccuracies and lack of nuance.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
From the writer who wrote Justice League.
Horrible. Just horrible.
This movie disrespect EVERYTHING that came before it. The list is too long to write down here. If you truly care about the story and the lore/mythology of Star Wars, stay FAR away from this movie. Director J.J Abrams and 'writer' Chris Terrio just looked at the Reddit page for the Star Wars movies and took fan theories en fanfiction and decided that should be the story. Absolute mess of a 'movie' and this will go down as the number 1 example of how to NOT make movies. They check stuff off a list and insult your intelligence while rushing through the movie. Nothing sticks, nothing makes sense. Its also boring as hell. Even the lightsaber fights are incredibly boring.
Please don't see this movie in the theaters. Send a message. Watch it when it drops on your TV or something. Never support this demolishing of old and beloved franchises.
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Generic sci-fi movie
The movie was bland and sometimes even boring. Nothing really interesting happens and nothing of interest is explored. I sometimes even forgot that I was watching a Star Wars movie. Alden Eihrenreich plays a fun and cool character, just nothing like Harrison Ford's Solo. Which is the least of the problems of this movie. Lando is a disappointment, he is hardly in the movie. The droid is annoying. Calling for 'equal rights' for droids. Like really? It was just distracting.
Since when are droids self-conscious? Since when do they care that they do work for aliens and humans?
The plot is bland and generic. Its just a sequence of events. It has no real focus or heart. No soul. It does nothing to deepen or explore the Star Wars lore or mythology.
Lando's pan-sexuality shows a few times, but nothing extreme. There is a moment where the droid makes a comment about Lando being in love with her, which is really weird and awkward, but thats about it.
The SJW stuff is not really noticeable (except from the droid, but its not that bad, just a bit annoying). So people boycotting this for the SJW aspect can stop it and relax. Just boycott it because its a disappointing movie and Star Wars deserves better.
The hamfisted cameo from a fan favorite character in the end was pointless and stupid. That really turned me off. Especially if they plan to make a sequel to this.
Thats my opinion from JUST seeing it. Maybe I'll change some viewpoints after a while, maybe I won't. I am interested in what other people think though. Rogue One for me is still the best Disney SW movie. I would say TFA was better but TLJ killed that movie aswell. So now it looks like Rogue One is the best they can do.
I think I would have preferred Phil Lord and Chris Millers take on it. Maybe the movie would be kinda weird. But atleast it would be SOMETHING. It would atleast have a directors stamp on it. They are good directors and I like their movies. They are never generic and bland. Its a shame we are never going to see that version. Lets hope Lucasfilm hires a good director for their next spinoff (thats not the sequel to this thing).
In short : its a 'meh' movie. You can easily wait and watch it somewhere else for cheap. There is no amazing scene or something epic that you NEED to watch (Nothing like the Darth Vader scene from Rogue One as example). Nothing happens thats maybe spoiler-y. I'd say avoid it and watch it for free in a few months. Just so you won't support this.
Star Wars movies deserve better quality than this. I've seen cutscenes from Star Wars games that are better than this. Lucasfilm needs to stop playing it so safe and start listening to the fans. Start making movies for the fans, just like Marvel is doing. Respect your audience. Trust in them that they are fans and that they know the Star Wars lore, and go ahead and use that and build the mythology.
Sorjonen (2016)
Amazing cinematography, great characters and good story!
I just finished the first case (first 3 episodes) and I just had to write a review for this show! Its amazing and I'm so happy Netflix decided to buy it. I live in The Netherlands so foreign TV shows rarely air here. It's mostly the Swedish crime dramas that air. It's refreshing to see Finland join in on the fun.
This show looks and sounds amazing, great music as well! The characters are great and the acting is on point. A very professional presentation here that makes American shows look like a kids game. If you haven't given this show a thought or a try, please do! I'm completely hooked and pray they make a season 2!
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
More backstory, deeper characters and more lore!
The whole thing was just a blast. It has less action than the first film but the characters all get their backstories and some are very emotional. Some people might find this film boring, but I just laughed so many times and dare I say it, watery eyes. Some very powerful emotional stuff is being shown here amidst the bizarre comic villains and scene's. Its just overall a great follow up.
Please don't listen to the negative reviews and thereby avoiding this film. I saw loads of reviews beforehand and I disagree with so many of them. this truly is one of my favorite Marvel films. So much heart went into creating this film and it truly shows! Funnier, more emotion, more lore, more backstories and the characters are so much better than the first film. This is how sequels should be!
The music is also amazing (as expected). I really cannot wait to see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3! (or Avengers Infinity War)
xXx: Return of Xander Cage (2017)
Do not waste your time and money on this!
I will be short and clear.
This film sucked. It just did. The acting is horrible, the dialog is horrible, the story is horrible. I actually like Vin Diesel in most of his stuff like Fast and Furious and Riddick, but this is just sub par. I thought it would be like Fast and Furious and be stupid but fun. It isn't. Its stupid and boring and the dialog and story are downright offensive towards the audience.
DO NOT WATCH.
If you do, be prepared to be disappointed. I warned you.
Doctor Strange (2016)
Great film!
I've seen all the Marvel films and every time a new one comes out I get excited and watch them opening weekend. Dr Strange was no exception.
I loved this movie, I will be short and without spoilers : A lot of crazy stuff happens in this film. The visuals are amazing and the actors are really good. The magic is very well done. The story is sorta typical bad guy stuff, however the way it plays out in the film is great and not really predictable. The music is awesome even though it doesn't really shine through the film like other films do (Star Wars and Spielberg films) but it does its part very well and I am happy Michael Giacchino took the job of scoring this film.
All I can say is just watch is. Don't listen to the haters, this film is very special compared to the rest of the Marvel films.
