Could have been interesting
15 February 2023
The trailer showed some promise. The whole background laid the foundation for what could have been an interesting story. But this ended up being rather terrible.

It went from showing promise to be a bit of a let down, then rather boring and then eventually just a waste of time.

Oh and the FIVE MINUTE sex-scene was simply too much. I'm okay with a sex-scene in a movie, but this was dragging on for far too long. Sure, it was probably to show they were all high as kites on the local drug, but really, it could have been cut 90% and still give the same impression.

The ending left me very dissatisfied. There could have been a great thriller in this, complete with nice twist. But no.

What a borefest
18 November 2022
I've seen hundreds, if not thousands of movies. I love a good horror movie. This was hyped pretty much. So we decided to watch it.

The movie was not really scary. A few jump scares I saw coming from a mile away. The story was not the least believable. All the time I was thinking "come on, is this a joke?".

The whole thing seemed like a vague idea in someone's head, that was never really thought out fully. Like something a child would think of.

Ending was a miserable piece of cinematography.

One plus was the sound track. That was pretty good. But the rest was in no way worth your time or the hype.

IF it were real...
26 February 2021
...it would be a pretty good story. But it's obviously not and as such it all kind of collapses in on itself.

The premise was okay, and this COULD be a great premise for a movie, but it's all so random and a bit cringe. Oh and some of the stuff "Sebastian" mentions is downright wrong. At least get verifiable facts right, if you want to make it believable.

What the heck did I just watch?
7 May 2018
I like Marvel movies. The whole superhero universe is quite entertaining. There have been a lot of them recently, and while the quality varies, they are usually at least decent.

Now, don't pull the racist card, because I am in no way that kind of person. But this... had it not been for Stan Lees cameo and the Marvel logo at the beginning, I would have thought this to be some random b-flick with decent CGI. But even that seem somewhat half-assed.

So we have these very developed high-tech bunch of people, with technology far beyond the reach of the rest of the globe, yet they make decisions based on the outcome of medieval combat? There was very little incentive to like the characters. The few puny attempts at "humour" was at best cringe-worthy.

The whole thing didn't seem to have any connections whatsoever to the rest Marvel universe. A few connections might have been positive, because then at least there might be something to look forward to. But as a standalone movie, this serves no real purpose for the average moviegoer. And that's why I cannot see myself to rate it higher than 4 stars. And I really like Chadwick Boseman and Forrest Whittaker!

New low for Vin Diesel
13 March 2017
Normally, I haven't got a problem with movies that are a bit over the top. But you can be over the top tongue-in-cheek. This isn't. It's just over the top and 2 hours of macho-fest for Vin Diesel.

I loved him in Riddick. The Furious movies were quite okay. At least I watched them in their entirety. This? No sir. I simply had to leave. Both me and my better half had to give up. She's normally quite fond of Diesel, but this was cringe-worthy scene upon another. No really redeeming features.

It's quite a feat to take decent action flick actors (Vin Diesel, Tony Jaa and Donnie Yen) and put them in a movie together, that screws up entirely.

Sorry Vinny, this is your new low. Even The Pacifier was easier to watch.

Shouldn't really work today, but oddly it does
26 August 2016
Look at this movie with young and fresh eyes, and it shouldn't work.

Look at it with older eyes (I'm 42) and it shouldn't work either. I mean, so much has happened in over 25 years! But somehow magic is involved, and the movie works. There is something to be said about french cinema from the 60s/70s/80s. Timeless classics were made.

I might view this with rosy eyes since it's from my youth. But I actually saw it in my youth and didn't think much about it. Having re-viewed it a few times in my older years, I start to notice the details of the story, the beauty of the acting and the actors of the era. But while the story as such is fine, what really ties the movie together is the sound track. Ennio Morricone did something extraordinary here. The notedly beautiful "Chi May" (italian for "whatever") may not be from 1981 (it was done years before), but here it really finds its home. Rarely does music from a sound track of a relatively unknown movie induce such feelings almost 25 years later.

And with that said, I can only say this: If you enjoy real, old school cinema, this should really be on your "movie bucket list".

Armadillo (2010)
9/10
This is simply how it was - and is
29 May 2010
I went to see this movie with my mother. We come from Slagelse, the city where Gardehusarregimentet is situated, ie. the place of the danish camp from which these soldiers came from.

Previously I have been stationed abroad with the military so I know a bit about the situation. I also know that my mother was worried all the time I was away, so I figured she would appreciate the movie. And she did.

The movie is at times fun, but most of the time it's simply depicting the life I got to know. Lots of boring days, waiting for something to happen. It shows the exact same kind of stereotypes I saw myself, the quiet one, the gung-ho type, the smart-ass etc. I quickly tuned into the whole scenario.

Armadillo might not be a masterpiece technically, but if you can stomach seeing it and NOT getting a lump in your throat, you're either without feelings or not alive. I remember the day I was going to ship off, the last conversation with my mom. And I was in my late 20s. Some of these boys are in their early 20s and far from mature.

We get to see how the "hot" situations are down there and that is fine. But I would have liked more about their everyday boring life. Sure, it might not make for the most interesting movie material, but you don't get the exact picture of just how boring it can be too.

Apart from that, a very well made movie.

Oh and the controversy of the soldiers killing (lethally) wounded Talebans? I would have done the same thing. And I am almost a pacifist. I might not agree with the fact that we're shipping off people there still, but I agree with how the people down there reacts.

Better than expected
30 December 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Did the world really need yet another Universal Soldier movie? Well, no. But at least this one is "official", in the way that it's got the original ensemble, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren. This time we get Andrei "The Pitbull" Arlovski as well.

The story is simple. Terrorists have placed bombs at the abandoned Chernobyl Nuclear reactor and threatens to blow the place up (thus exposing the core) if their terms aren't met.

This wouldn't normally be such a problem, but unfortunately they have a scientist from the Universal Soldier program on board, and he brought along some of his "experiments": The Next Generation Universal Soldier (NGU). And so the original, Luc (Van Damme) is found and brought into action again. But he will not face only one, but two Universal adversaries.

Sure, the movie is predictable and clichéd to oblivion, but somehow I found it to be pretty entertaining. There is also a long cut with Van Damme kicking ass which I first believed would be done in one long take. Unfortunately it wasn't. It was still a relatively long take, and kudos to the directors for that.

In the end we have a fairly polished B-movie. Effects are reasonably well done, acting is mostly pretty pathetic, but it's all quite entertaining in its own way. I give the movie 7 out of 10 which is based on the fact that it's a b-movie (straight to video) and the fact that I didn't really expect much from it. Solid effort.

Competent and funny, but too short and lose the fizz
15 June 2009
Warning: Spoilers
In Sorte Kugler (Black Balls) we follow Anders Matthesen as Alex Stein, a not so successful real estate agent. He is rude, jealous, don't pay attention his little daughter or his beautiful wife.

His wife is a police officer, something Alex wanted to be as well, but he failed.

One day Alex is driving to close a deal on a house, but drops a cup of coffee in his lap, thus resulting in a crash into a car coming from the right.

Alex dies, but he doesn't go to heaven or hell. Instead he goes to a special place where he can gamble upon whether or not he'll live or die. It's a series of tests to see if Alex is a good person. Wrong answers results in black balls being put into a tube, right answers puts white balls in another tube. If the white balls overflow first, Alex lives, but if the black balls beats them, Alex dies.

As expected, Alex is put through some not very easy situations that calls for extreme (for him) patience and honesty. Anders Matthesen is at his best, being an angry, frustrated Alex and the movie does give us some rather good laughs.

I enjoyed the scene with Alex and his mother a lot, perhaps because it kinda reminds me of situations I recognize.

But, alas, the movie is over far too quickly. Clocking in at about 80 minutes - barely - it falls a bit short. And the ending is - as has been noted by others - far to glossy and happy. A happy ending is fine, but this is happy in the extreme. I know it's supposed to be funny because of its extremity, but I must admit I was a bit disappointed by how Matthesen wrapped this one up.

He has the talent and the wit. A sharp and fast wit. It comes to life in a few scenes during the movie (like when he comments on his sisters way with words and sentence construction, loved that scene), but it seems he either had too little time or too few good ideas for the movie.

Had it been 30 minutes longer - 30 minutes of awesome Alex screen time - and the ending been a bit more realistic, I would have given this an 8 or 9. As it is, it's just about a 7.

It doesn't get much better/worse than this
22 February 2009
If you are looking for art, this isn't the place. Then again, Feast 3 is a really decent splatter movie. We got wonderfully stereotypical characters, good presentation and decent camera work. An awful story and great effects. I laughed and I enjoyed the effects immensely.

Now, the movie is of course enjoy even more if you have already seen the other movies. But basically, it's about these people being hunted by a bunch of gruesome monsters. The amusing part of them being the fact that they have rather large... erm... reproducing organs.

People nice in hilarious ways, there is plenty of exposed boobs and the movie is certainly not for the squeamish. But as much violence, gore and blood there is, just as much humour it's got. I mean, come on, it's got a martial artist named "Jean-Claude Segal"! Just how serious do you really think it is? In the end, the production value is dead serious, though. Just about all effects are well done and it's clear that the crew was enjoying themselves.

Great effort for a STV movie with a relatively small budget.

Rourke is better than ever.
29 December 2008
Don't get me wrong. Mickey Rourke finally convinced me of the recognition some people give him.

Me, I've never really been a big fan of him, but this movie made me care about him, and yes, him, not just his character. Rourke plays with such passion that you can't really fault him for doing a movie about a guy pretty much like himself.

I could go on about how moving, how funny, how tragic and how dramatic the movie is, but a lot of my fellow movie critics have already covered that ground. Instead I dedicate this comment to placing Mickey Rourke in my collection of fine actors, something I maybe should have done earlier, but it was "The Wrestler" that really showed me the light.

Thanks to the entire crew.

One of the finest movies in a long time.
28 December 2008
"Dear Mr. Fincher. You have proved to me that humanity is a species worth saving. I will return in a thousand years to test you again. Fare thee well, earthmen."

The above might very well have been an alien watching this movie. It certainly sums up many of my feelings after having watched it.

I won't go into details about the actual plot, most of you know the deal with Benjamin Button being born old and dying young. What you might not know yet, is that in between those two events, you'll experience numerous moments of awe, despair, sorrow, sadness, humor and sheer enjoyment.

The story is adapted from a short story and is one of the most engrossing I've watched in a long time. Clocking in at about 160 minutes, you'd forgive the movie for having a few dead periods. But it never does. It's as if not a single second could have been shaved off it. Respect to Eric Roth for the story, but with movies like Forrest Gump, Munich and The Good Shepherd, it's no surprise.

As for the much discussed effects, they are plentiful. But none of them gets in the way. On the contrary. They are added with graceful subtlety, making for wonderful and fantastic pictures. I am not quite sure what it is about the sceneries in the movie that is so wonderful. But they are thick full of atmosphere and everything ooze detail and handicraft at its best.

Much credit should also be paid to the soundtrack. The story stretches over a long period and the music is matched to every period, as well as the wonderful score.

Brad Pitt narrates and plays Benjamin Button - save for the end. Special effects was applied to make him older and younger. With marvelous results. He acts - as always - strikingly well. I'm not a particularly big fan of him, but a performance like this deserves recognition. And he does have a pleasing voice.

Lastly, I must point towards the always enchanting Cate Blanchett who is absolutely wonderful in this movie. It is rare to see a woman of such classical beauty. As she gets older in the movie, she just seems more and more graceful.

In the end, I felt like reversing time and watch the movie all over again, getting more of the beautiful details and dialog.

Thanks for a wonderful viewing experience.

Might almost make it to be a classic - in time
6 December 2008
Like many others, I didn't really know that to expect from this title, back when it was announced.

When I finally saw it, I was hoping to be blown away. I wasn't, really. I thought it was okay, but not much more. Then I saw it with my girlfriends son, and the magic revealed itself.

I noticed his total engrossment, the lights in his eyes and I was spellbound myself. Even though it was the second time I saw it.

Part of the magic, heck, MUCH of it, is certainly due to the wonderful soundtrack by one of the masters themselves, namely Alan Silvestri. Having received an Oscar (and a Grammy award) for the song "Believe", it sets the standard for how moving and emotional a movie score can be.

The movie itself is also heartwarming and charming, without being too much. The CGI is quite good and to be honest, this movie deserves more recognition. It's like finding a rare gem. It might not look much at first glimpse, but give it some affection and attention, and the beauty will reveal itself to you.

Be no means a classic, but...
25 November 2008
I'm not particularly into Dane Cook. Got nothing against him, either.

Sure, the movie is somewhat clichéd and brings nothing new to the table, but while it might not be an instant classic, it does include some rather hilarious scenes.

My favourite scene must be the scene in "Cheesus Crust". Call me low-level, but that was funny as hell. I laughed like I hadn't laughed in ages. It was great.

Perhaps one of the factors that made me like the movie is the fact, that I can be somewhat of an asshole myself. Yeah, I recognized some of the actions from myself. Not that I'm proud of it.

Yes, many of the jokes aren't gonna make you burst out laughing and the whole romantic scheme is kinda yawn-inspiring, but it kept me entertained and my mug glued to the screen. And that's why I gave it a solid 7.

Elite Squad (2007)

Turned out really, really well
23 November 2008
Having seen "Cidade de Deus" and thoroughly enjoyed it (though it is a grim tale), I was at first having high hopes for "Tropa de Elite". Then I thought that it could never reach the same high standards, and my hopes were lowered a great deal.

About 3 months ago I happened to see about 15 minutes of the movie, and that lowered my hopes even more. How wrong I was to judge such a great movie on what must have been an unfortunate 15 minutes.

I won't go into detail about the story, but it is both believable and compelling. Like "Cidade..." this is no fairy tale. It's the world as it is. No more, no less. Of course, there might not be that many guns blazing in reality, but I'd reckon this isn't very far off.

We feel the pain, the lack of morale and the despair and hopelessness. Photography is spot on, the acting is both fantastic and realistic. "Tropa de Elite" never went into the big theaters here in Denmark which is rather unfortunate, since it's a true gem. Instead we get loads of mainstream crap. Not to sound arrogant, I watch loads of mainstream movies too (voluntarily, even), but it's movies like this that made me love movies as fondly as I do.

Do yourself a favour. Get this on DVD. See it. Feel the pain. Immerge yourself in the desperate world. Then, after it's all over, enjoy your life, a life that will seem much, much brighter after this.

Kung Fu Panda (2008)

Entertainment in its purest form
7 June 2008
Like many others, I saw the "trailers" featuring Jack Black. The featurette made me think "Okay, at least I got to check this out". Not much more. It didn't make me think "This is gonna be awesome" or anything like that.

Boy, was I ever under-expecting.

At first I thought it was quite okay, decent entertainment and at least not totally crap. But then the really funny scenes and details kicked in, after Po gets into the temple. From then on, it was laugh after laugh, excellent voice acting, amazing CG animation (but this is Dreamworks so I expected that).

The whole deal simply hit home run for me. Spot on. I love martial arts movies, I love Dreamworks CG movies and I must admit I find Jack Black amazingly funny (saw Be Kind Rewind the other day and loved it). There was so much charm and amusement in this movie. It's without doubt the best animation from Dreamworks since the first Shrek.

Now, I am not saying this will be for everyone. There IS a lot of fighting going on, and while it is (for most of the movie) comical (yet amazing to behold) violence, it might not be suitable for the smallest of children. But for any healthy kid aged 6-7 or above (especially boys), this will be kick-a**! I cannot really put my finger on anything bad. Sure, the movie is filled with clichés, but sometimes you can go a long way with those. And this one serves them perfectly. I even rated this higher than Ratatouille, due to the fact that it took me totally by surprise. With Ratatouille, I EXPECTED it to be great. Kung Fu Panda I only expected to be decent, but it was awesome. That deserves the last point.

Great movie with a message
13 February 2008
I saw the movie (DVD release) and liked it very much. Not that it inspired me to shed myself of my material belongings or anything like that, but the message - or rather the messages - were quite good and there is much to be said in defense of Chris' actions. The freedom must really be a powerful feeling.

But I daresay he wasn't really that happy when he died. Clearly his relationship to his sister was close. Clearly he must have loved her. Therefore I fail to believe he was truly happy, having left this world without having seen her - or his parents for that long.

Actually he was a very selfish man. Come on, at least give word to the family. But no, he didn't seem to care. Very selfish if you ask me.

Oh and what's with the credits listing? The danish couple he meets on his kayak journey, the guy states his name is "Mads" (that's also what the subtitles say), not "Thomas".

All in all still a moving film that deserves the 8 I gave it.
