Love Thy Neighbour (1972)
And they have the cheek to send missionaries to educate us*
I have just tonight starting watching this, since my childhood. Now I was only young when I was first allowed this, I think maybe around thirteen. At that time it was all about the phrases " I'll hav alv" " sambo" "nignog" " honkey" "snowflake" etc.
As so rightly stated often by other reviews, it is not racist in the slightest. Eddie did tend to come off worse, but always came across as ignorant and bigoted. Did it make me racist, not all. In fact this show perhaps embedded the pointlessness of being racist and the stupidity of racist people. It is also not so far fetched as one might imagine. It's set up in the north of England, I lived up north, Yorkshire, in a town with a large Asia population. They was a lot of prejudice about. One example, when the holidays came, a lot of the kids would go what they called " paki bashing". Even my dad was a racist, though I would rather prefer to say ignorant, perhaps still is. I am thankful of this show, it showed me that people are people and race and skin shade should not be a barrier. There's good and bad in everyone. Actually I think the powers that be, need us to have prejudice against each other.
* not word for word but was a line Bill said in series 1 episode 3. Eddie had been his normal ignorant self.
This would have gone over my head in my youth, although I might not have seen it before.
Still funny as I remembered, but perhaps for very different reasons this time around.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)
Great Movie- entertaining as any movie should be
I thought it was a good movie, one I would happily watch again any time, which is a rarity for me. I watch a film to be entertained foremost and this was very entertaining in deed. I've read a few posts on here knocking the plot line as it was only ten years ago and how it lacks any continuity and would not be a reality. Wake up you're talking about a film about talking intelligent apes here, leadership, strength in numbers[ another gripe from some] and perhaps man's downfall. What did you expect?
So for me personally, It was very entertaining and watchable and look forward to the next one, next year?
The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence) (2011)
OK it's rather sick, I have seen worse.
let me first say that it has been a long time since I watched films, others might consider sick. My taste has changed with age and these are not really on my agenda now. So I thought I would see this, to be fair the sick idea kind of made me want to see it,as a kind of blast from the past but modern.
Like I said it is rather a sick idea, to do a film about somebodies sick thought, does that make me kind of sick to be intrigued about it? Or just curious? Whatever although It is sick, I just couldn't take it at all serious, granted with a bigger budget he could have improve it. But really, I was just Peeing myself laughing at some of the scenes of the centipede. So bad it's good kind of film, but really not quite that high or worth watching again. I did manage to watch it all the way through and I guess that's why I score a three.
Would I recommend this is anybody, NO, much better films out there without spending it on this.
The Damned United (2009)
Call it Soccer if you want, the game remains the same*.
I was 13 and very interested in Soccer/ football and loved to see Cloughie in his interviews. I agreed with him in some regards to the way Leeds played and how he wanted to play, so in that respects it was always going to be a bad fit for manager and players and a mistake by Cloughie and the board at that time.
Still, I still loved Cloughie, faults or not. He did later prove just what he might have achieved for Leeds, if only the board would have had the strength of their own decision to appoint him in the first place and continue to back him. In the end I feel Leeds lost out by being weak.
I think it would be fair to say that quite a few of the Leeds players were reaching the end of their best playing days and would need to be replaced before too long and Cloughie was aware of that, plus he had his own way of thinking how a team should play. I blame the players as much as Cloughie for things not going right in his time with them. he showed with Forest that he knew had to win a match and trophies and that was Leeds loss in the end.
* I am getting fed up of Brits having a go at the Americans for calling it Soccer, well why not? It is a English saying developed in the mid 19th century to differ Rugby Football and association football. Hence Rugger and Soccer. As a northern lad of the sixties, I can well remember always calling it soccer and fairly certain my friends did as well.
La vita è bella (1997)
Not sure it at first, strangely can't stop thinking about it
Just upgraded this up to seven from 6, might even go a little higher. The reason for this is, I did struggle through the first half of the film, although I did enjoy the humour and actually laughed out loud at some of it, I didn't like the actor when I first watched it. I'm so glad I did continue, strangely I can't get some images of it out of my mind, but had felt underwhelmed when it finished.
It is a weird subject to try make a comedy out of it, but underneath it does show how much any person would do for their own.
Not sure if it's a SPOILER.
But Near the end when he does his little march, just so his son keeps thinking it's a game, really touched me, thinking how many kids have had to suffer like that in reality. Not many films stick in my mind a week or so after seeing it. this one does and not really sure way, strange very strange.
The Prisoner (1967)
100
First review for me today, I've been reading reviews for a little while, so much so that, I;ve been more entertained reading them and missing all the good programmes I could be watching.
Anyway regarding The Prisoner and the theories of what it may mean. I feel it could be any number of things and that's the beauty of using your mind. Like life, there's not just black and white, one person's reality of something will always differ from somebodies else's reality, but see the same thing.
Personally I think it is just a sixties trip and better if you are chilled out, so to speak.
