Jack Ryan (2018–2023)
7/10
It's pretty bad but still pretty good
23 February 2024
Look, in all honesty, these series are pretty bad. The acting isn't great, the storylines predictable, the characters a bit flat ... but if you enjoy the topic (CIA, terrorism, counterterrorism etc.) you will still enjoy Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan! If you liked Homeland, you will like this too, even though it's definitely not as good as Homeland. Don't expect brilliant writing or storylines or surprising endings, but just expect some good action and the good ol' good vs. Bad, America vs. The terrorists, a theme which never fails to inspire both writers and viewers.

So I would recommend Jack Ryan only if you are into the specific theme, otherwise don't even try.

The intricate plotlines and well-developed characters contribute to the show's overall allure, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats.

Moreover, Bosch: Legacy skillfully explores new dimensions of Bosch's character, delving into his past while navigating fresh challenges in the present. I loved this when I was a teenager
5 January 2024
Absolutely wonderful series with the amazing Michael T. Weiss and Patrick Bauchau. The series were definitely ahead of their time! I remember being absolutely glued to the TV as a teenager for this. What a concept, that Jarod could portray a different person with a different job in every episode. I wanted to be like him when I grew up.

Sadly, the series ended too soon, or well, it ended with two movies that didn't make a lot of sense and then got taken off TV unfortunately. I am still expecting an ending or a sequel.

All the characters on this show were amazing: Jarod, Sydney, Ms. Parker, Lyle, Broots, Angelo, Raines, Zoe! I loved all of them!

Dumb and unwatchable
27 January 2023
I decided I finally needed to watch this movie after all the Oscar nominations it got. After 30 minutes, I almost caught myself falling asleep. After about 1 hour I turned it off. It was truly unwatchable. The movie (at least up until the point that I watched it) seems to have no plot at all. The multiverse theme seems to have been done without any proper theoretical backing or any philosophy behind it whatsoever. In any case, if there is any theory or philosophy, it's completely unintelligible. Everything indeeds happens everywhere, all at once, but I wouldn't say this is a good thing. Maybe I'm just not on the right drugs (no drugs at all) or I didn't understand the movie, but I highly doubt anyone will be able to explain it to me.

Scary, especially now
6 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Scary to see so many similarities with some current political situations that are going on!

I really liked these series. However, it starts to decline after the first season. The second season was still quite decent, but the third was just rubbish in my opinion. I only half understood what was going on at times and found some of the story lines quite unbelievable, especially the one about Sidirova and het girlfriend and also the ending with Hans Martin. I just didn't really understand and believe it anymore. The whole acid throwing movement also seems a bit far-fetched to me. Jesper Berg was still phenomenal of course.

Nice in the beginning, then repetitive
12 July 2022
I loved the series in the beginning but then found it a bit repetitive. The series definitely becomes weaker as it goes on. A bit creepier as well. Very Thai though, so still great for lovers of Thailand.

Decent so far
6 May 2022
I'm about 3 episodes in. I haven't read the book or seen the movie. I find it decent so far. Nothing spectacular though. The series is not true class, but it's entertaining enough. I usually enjoy this type of series so I suppose this is not up there so far with the very best. I'm gonna watch the rest of season 1, but I doubt I will watch season 2!

Can't believe Leonardo took this on
23 February 2022
This movie is just so terribly bad! I know a lot of it is meant sarcastically but it was such a bad movie I had to turn it off after 45 minutes. It was so bad it made me cringe. Can't believe Leonardo let this script slander his good reputation.

Great idea but poorly executed
23 February 2022
I love mysteries and the idea for this show is pretty good. However, the acting and storylines are just so bad. I actually kept watching till episode 6 or 7 before I couldn't take it anymore. There is just no development in the initial mystery storyline and meanwhile the poor acting just continues.

It just doesn't let you go
25 November 2021
I saw these series on TV when I was about 12 and didn't get half of it, but even as a child it made a huge impact on me and I never forgot about Zwarte Sneeuw.

I recently purchased the DVD and I was so happy so watch the series again. The series are truly compelling. Not in the last place thanks to Tamar van den Dop who is fantastic in her part as Eva. She is so beautiful and such a great actress.

I also loved seeing Amsterdam (and the world) in the 90s. The whole series now have a nostalgic feel about them. A mystery and search such as those in the series wouldn't be possible these days anymore with mobile phones and the internet.

I've never seen such deceitful people in my life
3 January 2021
I'm about half-way through season 2 now. It's been pretty entertaining so far, but I've grown more and more frustrated with the series.

I would say the whole series for me is quite predictable. It takes them many episodes to make things happen that I saw coming from day 1. I never really wonder what's gonna happen next. Nothing ever really surprises you in these series. Sometimes the story is outright dull. It has a very soapy feeling to it - it's entertaining and well shot, but it just seems like this could go on forever, in circles.

The worst thing for me is how blatantly deceitful the characters are. Nobody ever seems to be able to tell the truth in these series. The only problems they struggle with, in fact, seem to be the things they do that they don't want others to find out. Hiding things from their so-called loved ones seems to be full-time business to these people. Frankly, it just makes me constantly uncomfortable how the characters communicate, or don't communicate. In fact the dialogues are boring and often very open-ended.

I felt like, when things become too open-ended or it would finally become interesting to see how things unwind, the series skips forward a number of years.

However much they jump forward, leaving open plotholes and questions that are not answered, nothing seems to have changed. The characters just go on rambling and lying in their usual style. No attempt real has been made to make the characters age a bit.

Right now, I'm curious how things will develop, but I'm too tired of watching to go on. I think I'll just read the recaps online instead.

I wish I could do it all over again
24 September 2020
I wish I could go back in time and watch these series all over again. Getting my mind blown again, from episode to episode, in every single tense moment of this show.

Yes, it's all a bit confusing sometimes - characters appear two, sometimes three times, it's hard to remember their names and connections, but in the end it all makes beautiful sense.

Absolute 10 out of 10!

My goodness that was bad
9 July 2020
I just started watching season 1 and I heard it's the best one. I hung in there till about half-way, just cause the series had such high ratings, but somewhere around the 5th episode I couldn't take it anymore.

Of course I kind of want to know what happened to Will Byers, but the search for the missing kid is filled with lame, half-a** teenage drama between characters like Nancy, Steve and Jonathan who I'm not even half interested in. This is all to lead us away from the fact that the plot is completely empty and it seems as though they filmed the series without any plan whatsoever.

Unfortunately the lame conversations between hollow characters that lack personality are worsened even further by the terrible acting of almost all the actors involved, with the exception perhaps of two of the kids.

The character of Eleven is a true killer, in the worst way possible, especially because, even though she seems to speak English very well, she doesn't really speak and just keeps a blank stare on her face the entire time.

So if you'd like to watch about 7 hours of endless good-for-nothing screaming and drama, this series is for you!

It doesn't get much better than this
17 May 2020
This movie takes you through all kinds of emotions. It's an absolute classic. And with the two wonderful protagonist actors, it's definitely one of the best movies I've ever seen. I've watched it 3 or 4 times and never gets boring.

Interstellar (2014)

A decent watch, but ridicously unrealistic
16 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It's a good watch. Great visual effects, good acting.

Unfortunately the story is somewhat unrealistic, in many many ways. I can't believe people are saying this is the best movie they have ever seen in their lives. The protagonist travels to another galaxy through a wormhole and then after a looong 2,5 hours gets ejected from his spaceship into a black hole, where he realizes he is sort of behind his little daughter's bookcase, in a 5-dimensional world where he can just fly through the past, and he can push the books out and send encryped binary signals to a watch that he gave her when he left on that very space mission.

Ok I get it, the director wants to make us think about time, how it is non-linear, but the whole thing is just totally ridiculous. Not to mention the many other flaws...like the three astronauts spend a bit of time on some newly discovered planet, they come back to the spaceship and 23 years have gone by, but their colleague and Dr. Brand's father back home don't seem like they have aged a bit. Also we then hear the protagonist's daughter (who was 10 when he left) say that she is now the age he was when he left (even though he is still more or less the same age), so wait, he was only 33 when he left even though he looked like 45 which was about the actor's age at the time of the movie? And then he comes back to some weird space station they managed to build when he's 124, and somehow his daughter is still alive? And then he spends 5 minutes with her and takes off in some spacecraft to go back through the wormhole to find Dr. Brand? what the hell is going on? the worst story ever!

I remembered this movie from somewhere
16 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I remembered this movie from somewhere and then I realized that I had watched 30 minutes of it previously and turned it off because it was too boring.

The movie is just that: boring. Nothing really ever happens. The movie is totally unrealistic in many ways. The protagonist keeps going in and out of the spaceship, but when she finally figures out what the aliens are there for (which is also a very strange reason), the camp is already being evacuated and the aliens leave again. The whole movie made no sense. I felt terribly disappointed afterwards.

Very bad - but still kind of fun to watch
12 May 2020
With 2,5 hours the movie is undoubtedly too long, especially since it is lacking any real plot or conclusion. During the film I was constantly curious what was going to happen next, and when it would start to become clear what this was all about. At the end I realized that it would not become clear: all that I had seen turned out to be just a series of bizarre rituals, without any real conclusion to finish. Don't expect too much when watching this movie, and you might enjoy it for its bizarreness.

Great movie, all the way until the ridiculous ending
22 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Unfortunately I have to agree with many of the reviewers here: the movie is great and builds up great tension, all the way up until the ridiculous last 10-15 minutes, where the protagonist defeats a bunch of aliens all by herself that probably just destroyed most of humanity. John Goodman does, like always, an amazing job.

Definitely not one of Tarantino's best
22 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Slow movie, with especially very slow middle part that was not very engaging. As a non-American viewer under the age of 40, I bet I missed many hints at historical facts and characters. Without DiCaprio and Pitt, this movie would have rated much lower than it does now. The final scene is maybe the only really good one in the movie.

Definitely one of the best movies I've seen in the recent years. The laughter, the suspense, the shock, ... and especially the hilarious twist in the middle! At the same time it presents a wonderful critique of society. I just LOVED it. Everything you'd expect of a Korean movie and more.

Horrible acting, dreadful, long and insanely weird dialogues
16 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This movie really disappointed. Both protagonists are either bad actors or totally uncomfortable in their roles. They both come across as creepy and crazy. Most of the dialogues in the movie don't make any sense. Especially throughout the first 75% of the movie, there is just one weird unintelligible dialogue after another. Nothing hits the spot. I bet many people appreciate this movie for the fine Italian scenery, but that it really the only good thing about this movie, and I can go to Italy for that.

The storyline itself also doesn't make any sense. The movie seems a loose collection of scenes, and perhaps if you've read the book it all makes more sense, but without reading the book, it's quite hard to understand what the hell kind of random thing is going on now.

The worst thing is the end where the father appears to say that he is also a closeted gay guy. I mean... he's having a conversation with his gay son about his first love, and there he goes and he reveals he's been gay all along as well? His son is crying and he just goes and says like "I know what you're going through, I'm married to your mother and all, but I'm also gay! Surprise!" Well hello. Just absolutely ridiculous this movie. I appreciated it more for its ridiculousness than for anything els.

Worst movie of the year
25 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Probably the worst movie I've seen all year. Tedious, boring, unfocused, no storyline pretty much sums it up.

Geoff gets a letter from Switzerland stating that the body of his former girlfriend Katya who fell off a cliff 50 years ago was found in a glacier. This news and Geoff's memories of the event terribly upset his current wife, Kate.

The movie basically lacks any type of story or storyline. I was expecting Geoff to go to Switzerland, I was expecting the marriage of the two to end in a divorce, I was expecting all kinds of things but the movie gives you none of it.

This story of Kate's jealousy basically lingers on for exactly 93 minutes (I was checking my watch about every 5 minutes, whenever I was able to keep my eyes open). People around me fell asleep during the movie as well. In all those 93 minutes however there is nothing which really happens, just her getting more and more jealous without any apparent reason, even at the final wedding party where Geoff makes an emotional and beautiful speech, she is still jealous.

3 out of 10 because the acting was more than decent and for showing us England's beauty.

Beautiful and disgusting
24 June 2015
This is without a doubt the most disgusting film I've ever seen. The number of scenes in the movie that make you go "OMG" are probably not countable on one or even two hands.

However, the disgusting parts are never there just to arouse disgust. It is all done with a certain amount of grace and balance, by the director but by the main actress as well. I found myself having a good laugh a large number of times.

The main actress by the way is truly awesome, beautiful and appealing, and totally fit for the part.

There is enough of a storyline to make the movie interesting besides the focus on sex and filthy things.

I really totally recommend seeing this movie.

A waste of time - and bad for the stomach
23 June 2015
When I was waiting for the movie to start, I was wondering why so many gay couples had come in to see it. However this was all explained as soon as the movie started.

This film indeed is not about Eisenstein making a film (we see very little to nothing of that), or about his time in Mexico: except for some beautiful shots of nature and some dead masks and philosophical bladibla which has been taken totally out of context and are never truly deepened, there is little to no true interaction with Mexican culture. All conversations except for a very small amount are in English.

No, this movie is all about the male body and, to put it frank, gay anal sex. Yes, indeed the butt-loving Eisenstein receives from his Mexican guide Cañedo is probably his most profound encounter with the Mexicans, and for the rest of the movie the two characters do little else than run around naked with their willies flopping up and down. Other characters do appear in the movie but get no real chance at any story or development. The prime example of this are the American brother and sister who barge into Eisenstein's hotel room towards to end of the movie. This is actually the moment that the viewer discovers that Eisenstein has already been in Mexico for 8 months shooting a movie with American funding, something quite essential but completely discarded during the first part of the picture.

The most annoying part of the film was certainly the vertiginous camera work. In the scene in the hotel room just described, the camera spins for about 5 minutes around the bed with a half-naked Eisenstein in it. I had to actually close my eyes as I felt the whole scene was making me sick. The vomiting and diarrhea scenes at the start of the movie had already done the same thing.

In other words, for those profoundly into male nudity and gay cinema, I would recommend to go and see this film; otherwise, you'll probably have some other place you'd rather be.

Good watch, slightly disappointed
18 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Of course, it is a special feat in itself that a director banned from making movies has yet made another movie and has smuggled it out of Teheran in order to show us what life in Iran is like. Unfortunately, this in itself is not enough to give this film a high rating or enjoy it thoroughly.

The film is funny at times, but perhaps not as funny as I suspected from all the trailers. The passengers are quite obviously all actors (which is understandable considering the political situation in Iran) and the stories they tell appear to be all invented.

The invented story lines and actors however sometimes failed to captivate me. I was intrigued by the dash cam at first, but started feeling slightly bored about 40 minutes into the film. This is a good piece of art by a great artist, but it is unfortunately far from brilliant.
