Outlast (2023)
Great program to watch with your kids
You know, back in the 80's and 90's, they constantly lied to us about human nature and how good always prevails. Human nature is disgusting and this show portraits it just the way it is. It's just a matter of context before we turn on each other. And the cold reality is, even if there's good folks around, their kindness gets played against them. Bad things happen to good people and most of the time, they go home without a chance to get even. The only thing missing from this recipe is crime and boy is it legitimate. Stealing to survive is one thing, stealing to inflict pain is despicable and justifies escalation and retaliation in the real world. This is exactly what's wrong with this world, tyrants push others around without the fear of retaliation.
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
Budget CGI, a disaster in 3D
I've walked in the Cinemax Premium Hall with the same expectations I did when the new Top Gun came out. My expectations were far from being met. The 3D post processing looked like a mixture of scenes containing either 24p or 60hz and moments with high interpolation (the soap opera effect). Also it looked like a mixture of animation scenes and video game scenes with obvious transition from one scene to another. I still don't know how to digest the experience. Secondly, it was way too long for what it wanted to tell. I have no problem watching an immersive long movie. But this one made me impatient more than once. It really felt stretched intentionally and obviously more than once. I've walked in with high cinematic, visual expectations and low expectations for the script. But boy was this one going to surprise me. I rarely feel like I wasted my time with a movie. With this one, I feel double-crossed. I don't want my money back, only because I got the chance to warn others. I can understand why they didn't want to disclose the budget. You would feel tricked if they did. Maybe the 2D would look better, I don't know. But it's a stretch anyways.
The Paradise Suite (2015)
If I were to see this one by myself I would have left the theater on many occasions
Well, it's not all bad but it's flawed from start to finish. Inconsistency and mediocrity is what bothers me the most. It lacks credibility also, for bad acting. The main characters were ok-ish, especially the kid, who I have to say, was in a league of his own, his drama had nothing to do with the rest of the film and can be judged as separate story, which I enjoyed. But the rest is like bad uninspired TV series, which you would enjoy only in the context of seeing how dreadful it can get. So, I would recommend this only as an experiment, if you are curious about dutch film making, or something... if not, avoid this one, or get ready to make fun of its mediocrity to help you get to the end.
Mother! (2017)
You might think a full 10 is exaggerated, but...
This movie depicts the state of humanity at its present time, we are so selfish and behaved so foolishly, that we managed to make even the gods loose their heads. This right here is pure art, you either get it, feel it, or you don't. Mother nature plays amassing, she is so innocent and delightful, hats off to Jennifer.
So, you see, if you judge art by its flaws, which I failed to observe, you will miss the bigger picture. And boy, what a picture this is!
Durak (2014)
A truly great portrait of the dramatic clash between morality and greed in our society
First of all, this movie is authentic. It depicts with great detail and credibility the rotten face of communism in Russia today, even thou it could take place in any of the ex USSR countries. Even old democracies are not strange to corruption, but the scale and implications in less democratic states is way bigger. The story is great and it unfolds at a steady pace, characters are wisely chosen, all of them, living their own complicated drama and acting accordingly. But it's more than that. In my eyes, this movie felt, not only perfect in every way, but it also had a lot of human nature in it. You must watch this movie, it truly is a masterpiece.
