Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989)
Not the worst, far from the best
Jason Takes Manhattan was a movie I saw as a kid and stuck in my memory due to 2 specific scenes: the one where Jason takes tons of punches from the boxer guy then, with one blow, knocks dude's head right off and the one where he's in NYC and breaks the guys' stereo and they step to him so he shows them his face underneath the mask and they immediately relent. Classic scenes. So I watched it again for the first time in say 30 years and I'd say now it's not too bad but also not too great. Those two scenes still are the best but I'd forgotten this only takes place in NYC for just a little bit at the end. It's otherwise a fairly forgettable film in this series that's not making much of a mark. The characters are not very likeable and the premise is pretty stupid when viewed outside the context of "well, they can't do another one at a campground so they had to mix it up a bit". It's basically Jason on a boat killing everyone, which is actually not a bad concept. In summary, Jason gets on s boat, kills most of the people, then gets to NYC and kills the rest of them except the heroine who kills him. Big shocker, right? Sounds pretty familiar. We are running out of ideas here... maybe next he should fight Freddy then we can shoot him into outer space! Oh to be a fly on the wall on these pitch meetings haha!
Seems Like Old Times (1980)
Fun old vintage Chevy and Goldie
Fun movie... good to see some vintage Chevy Chase and Goldie Haun. I just watched this for my first time as I'd missed this in the 80's... it must not have been on HBO enough! This movie is pretty funny in a charming kind of way. There's some really funny wordplay and banter back and forth between Chase, Haun, and Charles Grodin. And some notable "That Guy" appearances by the guy playing one of the robbers is that guy from PeeWees Big Adventure and Chester is that guy with the headphones from The Thing.
Favorite line, delivered by a guy in the movie for maybe five min: "You see how I'm remaining calm? That's because I'm the Governor". This line cracked me up! Great delivery by the actor.

What a let down
The trailer looked good but even five min in I started to have my doubts that this would be a good movie. Plays on the disturbed kid cuz something is happening at home trope. Seemed like recycled ideas and the ending, the reveal, is so dumb. I was pretty disappointed... the mood seemed forced. The kid wasn't likable, and again the ending was so dumb. I wish I had the time back I spent watching this rubbish. I should have known from the title that bad ending was coming, but here I am, ever the optimist in horror.
Even Homelander couldn't save this movie... his part was so lame. You gotta let Homelander cook, baby! Yeah!
Malum (2023)
So dumb
I really liked Last Shift. I thought the trailer for Malum looked cool but I wasn't stoked to find out it's kind of remaking Last Shift... would have liked to see a new concept by this film maker. So that being said, Malum was a huge disappointment to me. It was so over the top but took itself very seriously. Perhaps going the zany route would have yielded better results. The acting was not good, the constant voices and whispering and such was super annoying. And all the film's happenings were just not entertaining. Also the continuity is pretty bad... the cult leader is the same age when he's baptizing the main character as a baby as he is when she's an adult? It's the last night at the same police station AGAIN as in the original? It was just so dumb. I usually really enjoy films about cults summoning demons and such but this was just annoying. Almost turned it off with 15 min left, I was so bored by it. I'd say go watch Last Shift and avoid this movie.
Blood & Gore score = 7/10
Annoying cult leader = 8/10
Plot: 2/10
Alternative to this movie: get some housework done, you'll be better off.
Infinity Pool (2023)
So dumb
I went into this movie thinking it could be cool based on the trailer and the names involved. And for the first half it was not too bad, kind of interesting. Then it really went intentionally over-the-top weird and I just got lost. I didn't like any of the characters and I'll include Skaarsgard and Goth's characters in that. The main character, James, wasn't really very interesting and it never lent any explanation to what the hell he was doing or why his wife was in the movie at all. I thought when the movie really went over the top to be weird it got really boring. Then predictable. Then unbearable. I hoped for some explanation or just something at the end that could justify my spending 2 hrs watching it and it didn't deliver. For me this movie was not very enjoyable.
Long Weekend (1978)
Cricket????
He left the dog in the jeep when he ran off to die! What an asshole. This guy had it coming the whole movie. I hope Cricket found a way to escape and then haunted this guy's soul forever. Also would have like to see him get eaten by alligators but his fate was satisfying nonetheless.
