Halimin put (2012)
An Engaging and Moving Story!
Bosnia is hardly known for its film industry, overshadowed by the last two decades of war. As a lover of foreign films, I must admit that I don't suppose I've even heard the language spoken before in a film, or was aware of movies being made in Bosnia and Yugoslavia. This one really won me over with its cinema verite style, shot on actual 16mm film. It's really refreshing when you see how someone can tell such a compelling story that's so simplistic - the story of a mother in search of her family. There's an air of authenticity in everything here - from the real locations, to the actors who lived through this very divisive conflict in their history. It's truly amazing - almost feels like a realist novel unfolding on screen, as you quickly forget that you're watching a movie.
Hollow (2011)
Hollow is nothing like its title - and that's a good thing!
A devoted horror fan who's loved the offerings of everything from the years of Universal horror to the golden age of slashers is somewhat unfortunate to be these days as contemporary horror films tend to trade suspense for over the top gore. I had reasons to be wary of this film too - as I'm hardly a fan of camcorder movies. Thus, I hardly walked in with high expectations. I don't regret it. The camcorder effects worked beautifully - giving a strange aesthetic - making the ghostly forms when they appeared more believable. The harsh sound recorded too gave a very gritty vibe to everything happening on screen - the unsettling crunch of the zoom lens right before the darkest moments. Also more real are the very atmospheric locales - the old English forests and towering sinister shaped trees. As a lover of English myth and folklore I also thought this film did a great job respectfully treating the lore. A truly thrilling film that watching on your computer may actually heighten the fear and suspense you feel. Great stuff!
Dead Silence (2007)
A man tries to find out about a mysterious dummy and uncovers a dark secret
This was a pretty awful movie...which not surprisingly was in a 4 DVD's for $10 deal at Hollywood Video...The premise is somewhat old...evil ventriloquist dummy. Granted that's somewhat scary but also been done to death. Not to mention he curiously reminded me of Slappy from GOOSEBUMPS...but with less personality. The story is pretty convoluted and lots of gaps are never fully explained (well, maybe in the last half hour. I couldn't watch past the hour mark). Question 1 being why his dad looks like Tom Edison and living like a recluse in the exact same town the dummy comes from. The incentive is also kind of shaky...a very stupid cop (played terribly by Donnie Wahlberg) accuses the protagonist of murdering his wife. I do enjoy the occasional bad movie but there's something lacking in bad modern horror movies that make me avoid them...probably the by the number, assembly line process of shocks and clichés through which they are made. Any little research that could be done to make the movie somewhat accurate or more intriguing (knowledge of how the law works was probably whatever James Wan saw on Fox's COPS or LAW & ORDER) was neglected, as was any effort to keep the characters from being cardboard cutouts.
