Jak-eun a-ssi-deul (2022)
the love of her life was a woman...
OkOk. First and foremost, I didn't enjoy the show like I thought I would. The acting was great, the story though.... It felt like they were trying to put up as much information and events in order to keep people in suspense, but what it really did was confuse me and overdo it. Too many things happening and twists that were anticlimactic, I found myself saying "Ohhhhkay", A LOT. :/. Female friendships are such a central part of womanhood and I think this show conveyed how deeply these bonds influence and support women. Hwa-young really did save this series for me, her presence on and off screen was what made the show (literally). I liked how they wrote her character and she made the watch worthwhile. One sex scene in the series threw me off tho.... It was so bizarre like?? Ya'll just be writing anything. Aside from that, I DID NOT LIKE THE STORY. IT WAS MID, BUT I HAD TO SEE IT THROUGH FOR IN-JOO.
On the Count of Three (2021)
" when a customer is talking you listen, bro. it hurts to be ignored."
AMAZING chemistry between the two leads. The ending took a really dark turn, which is criminally fitting for this movie. Simplifies su!c!d3 in a way that is so different from other media that talks about, shows, and unpacks mental illness. Insane directorial debut from Carmichael! His talent on and off screen is exceptional and dearly treasured. Abbott's delivery was so deep cutting due to his character's personality and story. Felt immense frustration and anger because he was swept away and hurt by the evils of others. A character that anyone can see bits and pieces of themselves in. Val and Kevin's friendship exceeded normal expectations and contained a beautiful, touching spark.
A SCENE THAT STUCK WITH ME!
Val: "Remember when we were kids and, like, I'd be in a dark place and you'd always try to distract me by doing something dumb like make me race you on your bike or you know?
Kevin: "Yeah. Yeah. I remember. What about it?"
Val: "Thanks for trying to turn things around for me. I appreciate it."
Kevin: "Yeah. Well, it didn't work, did it?
Val: "You got a good heart bro, just take the compliment."
PEN15 (2019)
i mean the intro is phenomenal...so naturally the whole is.
It is made by women, for women. A story of middle school days and the icks and warmth of youth. The cast is so talented, and each episode has a bit of angst, comedy, and the raw emotion packed into it. Loved how one second you would be on the verge of crying and the next laughing. Captured the awkwardness and uncomfortable setting of growing up as a girl and person of color. Hands down a beautiful experience from start to finish.
Mare of Easttown (2021)
"This one thing. Why couldn't you just leave it alone?"
Almost wish that the show was renewed, but it ended so well. Cast was phenomenal. Story had a perfect amount of twists and the detail is insane. Loved Kate Winslet's performance and Julianne Nicholson's role as Lori blew me away. She met Winslet halfway in terms of delivery and presence on and off screen. Comical, ominous, depressing, and riveting. Easily one of HBO's best.
Candy (2022)
had every chance to be good and failed at every opportunity
The acting and what the show was based had the capacity to heighten the show's storytelling, incredibly. It had every chance to be amazing, but ended up being so anticlimactic and underwhelming. Usually, when a series has actors & actresses that seemed to be cast by drawing straws, it delivers, w/o fail....that was not the case here. The story dragged the performances down, unfortunately. Do not watch! Waste of time.
Gravity Falls: Dipper and Mabel vs. the Future (2015)
it ain't over till it's over.
Loved this few episodes of ease you get before you get to this one. Blend-in blandin's lil cameo was almost believable until he smashes the glass, haha. I think the way this set up the future episodes was very well done. The opening song and visuals change to really give the feel of uncertainty and absolute chaos.
Gravity Falls: Not What He Seems (2015)
EVERYBODY WAS GAGGED.
The whole show leading up to this was full of constant easter eggs and storytelling with just the right amount of subtlety and obvious details. This episode changed the trajectory of kid shows...forever. Whole time you were trying to guess what was about to happen and then some dude pops out of a portal ONLY to be announced as Grunkle Stan's brother!!! And then the closing credits scene with two boys on a set of swings....yea...yea....
I still get chills to this day.
Uncharted (2022)
anything with mark wahlberg? walhberg? is a curse.
If you want to see Tom Holland shirtless in almost every other scene by ALL means, but the story was so fast-paced and the performances were underwhelming. BUTTTTT Tati Gabrielle carried the movie ON HER BACK. Such a cool villian.
Shei xian ai shang ta de (2018)
"i thought good things happen to good people."
Such a beautiful movie from start to finish. The past and present is shown in such a special, honest way. The performances from mom, son and mistress? Feels so natural. Love the little illustrations throughout the movie! Had this on my watchlist for a bit and do not regret finally watching it. Love and sadness was visually demonstrated so well. Easily one of netflix's hidden gems.
Boku dake ga inai machi (2016)
"Believing in someone." That's a weird phrase, isn't it?
Just watch it. First episode in, you will want to finish it in one sitting (i mean you can...if you want). It's storytelling was perfectly excecuted. The voice acting was phenomenal. I still get very excited rewatching it just to pick up on details and moments between these characters. I will recommend this to any and everyone, its singular. Never getting over how "Kayo's meal" LOST against "The Kiss" scene from Yuri on Ice for The Most Heartwarming Scene award at Crunchyroll's 2016 Anime Awards. Also DO NOT LOOK UP THE RESULTS FOR THIS AWARDS CEREMONY YOU WILL GET A MAJOR SPOILER!!! Jaja but watch it!
"I never stopped believing."
Michiko to Hatchin (2008)
gaslight. gatekeep. girlboss.
Michiko has to be single-handedly be the strongest, most well-written, deeply-layered, female lead character ever in anime (that's set in a normal world where there is no supernatural or fictional occurrences,,just an anime set in a normal world where normal stuff happens). She means strictly business and will not back down from a palm reading session...if the situation ever arises.
Hatchin is this cool, rebellious kid with no sense of direction in life. She lives day by day and once she meets Michiko, her new life involves tracking down her father, which she's never met, with this mysterious woman, who she claims is the love of his life...Hatchin has no idea what life on the road w/ Michiko will bring her.
It's a beautiful story about revenge, run-downs, love, the act of moving-on, friendship, action, loneliness, and of course the relationship between a confident, gorgeous, short-tempered, spiritual-inclined lady and a smart-mouthed, unapologetic, bratty kid.
It's a must-watch.
