Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
This is probably the best standalone MCU movie to date
This movie has everything. The story and characters are written from the heart. James Gunn shares much of himself through these fascinating and wonderful individuals. The fundamental basis of the story is a group of traumatised and isolated individuals uniting through their trauma and coming together to fight for something bigger than themselves.
No other MCU movie possess the same level of weird but wonderful power of this one. Tyler Bates also lays down a very impressive score to boot.
I am very excited to see where these characters go next in Volume 3. If you are a fan of science fiction or generally just like really well made self contained stories then this one is for you.
Chernobyl (2019)
Quite simply incredible
One of the greatest television miniseries ever, maybe the best. Absolutely gripping and some of it is really hard to watch due to the harrowing nature of the subject matter.
I simply cannot fault any aspect of this show. It is perfectly paced. Perfectly acted. The direction and camerawork is perfect, so is the soundtrack and the atmosphere they created.
It's almost hard to imagine anything like this ever truly happened but as they say truth is stranger than fiction. Not a single element of the story is watered down or made to seem like they are taking creative liberty, that is aside from one fictional character who themselves was only created to channel those who were too numerous to accurately and honestly portray all on their own.
Black Adam (2022)
More Sludge
Yet another pile of dross. I'm the fool because I bought a ticket. They have your money so now can blast you with as much uninspired nonsense they like. I will say that Lorne Balfe's score was fantastic, but everything else just makes me feel like I am now dumber having watched this movie.
Dwayne Johnson gives a mediocre effort to try and draw you in to his inner dialogues but frankly his acting skills are lacking so you just find him standoffish and kind of unlikeable for the most part. Pierce Brosnan was unceremoniously killed off because they could obviously only afford him for one movie. More of the same stuff from the last few years, Hollywood is going down the pan. And what the hell was that villain? Who are they? Why should I care? No effort whatsoever.
Detroit: Become Human (2018)
Our future laid bare
The folks at quantic dream have intricately crafted a vision of our near future with terrifying accuracy and precision. This game makes you reevaluate what it means to be alive. Who determines what it os? Do you have to be able to see, think and feel, or can you simply decide for yourself?
You are asked to make choices that impact the lives of those around you and the world in truly significant ways.
Become Human.
Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987)
Relaxing, thought provoking, brilliant.
I try to watch an episode of this in the late evenings before i go to sleep, I find it really calming and a nice wind down.
A Fox in Space (2016)
Terrific Work
I still find myself coming back to this series every now and then. Even though there's only one episode so far, the quality of the product reflects the hard work and dedication that Matthew Gafford has put into (and still puts into) this series. The fact that he does this all essentially by himself, with some assistance with voicing chacracters outside his vocal range, is incredible and truly inspiring. Whether you're a fan of Starfox, animation, the furry fandom, or just the general aesthetic of science fiction, you'll love it!
Looking forward to the next episode!
Loki (2021)
This is becoming tired now
I've been following the MCU since it's inception in 2008. I love Tom Hiddleston and the Loki character but this show is boring and mindless. I honestly can't believe people are seriously calling this "the best show ever". Loki was a good villain in the movies. Arguably one of the best characters as a matter of fact. But the way he's being treated here is just pathetically predictable and dull. The show tries so desperately to make you laugh it's almost painful. Remember, this is supposed to be the 2012 Loki, yet in the show he's clearly been catered to the fan girls and boys.
The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
Definitely not without its flaws
All in all, this is a good superhero movie. Being the sequel to arguably one of the greatest films ever made was always going to be a tall order, even for a mind such as Nolan's, and at points that inferiority to its predecessor is very much apparent. The plot feels as though it hasn't been really fleshed out, despite the fact that the film is nearly 3 hour long, which left me quite perplexed. Some of the acting is below expectations. Bale seems like he's just waiting for it to be over and Tom Hardy's portrayal of Bane, while enjoyable, is sometimes truly cringeworthy. All in all a rather strange experience that leaves you feeling like it could've been so much more.
Avatar (2009)
Nice to look at, not much else going for it
It's a visually appealing movie. There's no debating that. At the time the vfx were groundbreaking and even today they still look damn good. The biggest gripe I and many others have with this film is that it's all style and very little substance. The plot is as cliched and at points incredibly dull. I care little for the characters and am more interested in the world itself than the plot.
Halo 3 (2007)
It's halo 3!
In my opinion this is the best game ever made. I played it to hell and back when it came out and still enjoy it just as much today.
Toy Story 4 (2019)
Really don't know how to feel about this one
The first 3 films were an integral cornerstone of my childhood, and I share that sentiment with many people. However I don't understand why a fourth one was made. It feels like a cash grab. The film itself is of fair quality, if lacking in certain ways. But maybe that's just me being protective of the first three? What I do know is that there absolutely is nothing more to be said by these characters. The story is done, leave it be.
The Mandalorian (2019)
Dave Filoni Should Have Been Given The Sequel Trilogy
This series is leagues above anything the sequel trilogy of movies tried to accomplish. I can't help but wonder what could have been if Filoni was given creative control of those movies. An opportunity sorely wasted imo.
Red Dead Redemption II (2018)
Proof that video games should be respected as an art form
If you play this game from start to finish and beyond, you will find yourself utterly immersed in not only one of the most intelligently written and developed stories ever seen in a videogame, but you will also be blown away by an absolutely breathtaking open world, with more life and personality than nearly any other game I've played. And I've played many. This game serves as definitive proof that video games are slowly becoming the pinnacle art form.
The Revenant (2015)
Amazing
This is more than a film. It's an experience. You experience every cut, fall, gash and frost bitten finger. Truly a transcendent piece.
Upgrade (2018)
As Generic As They Come
If you're a die hard science fiction fan fiction then you may be able to squeeze some enjoyment out of this bland and uninteresting film. Uninteresting characters and the plot is as cliche as they come. Visuals are somewhat interesting.
Dorohedoro (2020)
Unique and Stylish, But Slow To Find It's Feet
One of the most outlandish anime I've ever watched, and I mean that in a positive sense! A truly bizarre world with even more bizarre characters inhabiting it. It has some kickass 3D animation and a great soundtrack to boot. It's also very violent, but most of it is highly stylised mind you, and I found it took a few episodes to really get into gear, but beyond that it's pretty good!
Beastars (2019)
Layered Characters with Important Sociological and Psychological Themes
Anyone who dismisses this show as "Furry Trash" needs to get their head checked. This series has everything you could ask for; memorable characters with meaningful personalities, beautiful 3D animation that at times tows the line between 2D and 3D, an enthralling soundtrack, and an interesting story with psychological and social aspects.
The Plague Dogs (1982)
Genuine and Heartfelt
This films animation may not be the cleanest, but damned if it isn't stylised and visceral.
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Sublime Masterpiece
I honestly can't understand how anyone can rate this film below an 8/10. It's one of the most breathtaking pieces of cinema I've ever seen. Remarkable story, sound, and visuals.
I suppose the main gripe people have with it is that not much really happens. It's more of a cerebral experience than one might expect. It doesn't give you the answers. And that's why it stays with you.
