Poor Things (2023)
Best movie in a looooong long time.
Poor Things 2023 R18+
Spoiler Alert..
Where do I put a finger on Poor Things?
It is a Frankenstein dark comedy that makes Darth Vader look like Mary Poppins. This movie touched on every Equation of Existence. Beginning with death & rebirth, a damaged God with operational scars all over his face, control, exploration, religions, spirituality, philosophy, manipulation, Botfarming armchair General with a pistol and above all, the supreme Cat-like REBELLIOUSNESS of EVERYTHING!! Amazing casts and performances by Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe.
Rated R18+ for a lot of 'furious jumping'. Desire is absolutely one of life's hindrances to overcome. Poor Things is focused on 'Polite Society' being the obligatory facade that destroys truth and ultimately, humanity. Our protagonist Bella Baxter is very much in every present moment.. even at young mental age. Mentally and emotional aware with 'fortunes favour the child' attitude. She is bright & psychologically driven, and has expressed on several occasions how she did not take kindly to being trapped or held prisoner. Not even her father God could stop her.
Miming musical score of Hitchcock's 'Psycho' and sharp dialogues. Bella's mind grew at an accelerated pace and soon overtook typical garden-variety psychopathy.. as her travelling sex buddy Duncan Wedderburn found out how difficult it was to get his head around her. The music became smoother with Bella's mental growth.
Every obstacle was an opportunity for Bella's evolution. Even whoring gave her better psychological patterns of men and women along the way.
Poor Things is one of the most kickass movie I've seen in a looooong long time.
Personal rating 9/10.
The VVitch: A New-England Folktale (2015)
Best movie I have seen in a long time!
This was recommended to me.. I threw it up on bigscreen with a group and WOW! We laughed like The Joker.
Which way to contentment? The opposite direction of this..
Hail to the writer/director of 'The Witch 2015!'.. starring Anna Taylor Joy contains amazing art pieces emphasizing never-ending cycles of natural fears leading to faith, guilt, sins, expectations, control -vs- collapses, how to get in their own ways and trip themselves 400 trillion times over, desperation, from unknown to unknown, never in the moment, allergic to lightning, thunder, fire, storm, floods, birth, aging, sicknesses, death, sight, sound, smell, touch, taste, thought, memory, emotions, emotional intelligence of a 2 year-old, all the way to how to become someone else's favorite toys. Beautiful philosophical writings and acting.
Mulan (2020)
A breath of fresh air.. and fresh clothes
No spoilers here.. only this is worth mentioning.
Mulan 2020 was one of those productions where costume designers insisted on having washing machines churning away at full blast.
Apart form those perfectly bright outfits without the tiniest of imperfection, Mulan 2020 was a good show. Mulan was fearless, selfless, powerful, unrestrained & extremely hot once she let her hair down.
I'm a Mongol, our warrior women (eg: Khutulun) were quite undefeated powerhouses in war therefore I appreciated the show. Family & being who you are are the top take-home values. Balances of heaven & hell combined to make good story telling.
Underwater (2020)
Terible cinematography
The art of photography is knowing what to leave out of the scene. This guy took it way too far and zoom into the atoms of things. Images are so up-closed there is no room or borders for material to breathe. Granted, he wanted the claustrophobic feel, but zooming in to tight while sticking cameras up Kristen's to make her the only character in the movie isn't very appealing.
Conclusion: Please stop falling in love with Kristen 24/7 and learn to use the Zoom slider on your camera equipment.
Thanks.
Game of Thrones: The Iron Throne (2019)
You audiences will cheer.. eventually.
Hi folks!
Thank you kindly for accidentally consuming a test dropkick-finale of GOT. Week! Don't you worry the real finale is next week! Funnily, we just wanted to see how you would react if the series was written and filmed by the kitchen crew. You see, everyone went on an island fling and left us silly chefs to play around with expensive camera equipments. Phenomenal writing huh? The actors performed for free. Enjoy!
Halloween (2018)
Annoying to watch
What to do when you're a bunch of mice trying to survive a professional killer kitty?
First it's best to believe this kitty is only an urban legend. Pay no attention to history, news, archives, etc.. because why not? Once kitty approaches, make sure you scream! Yes seriously give away your position, shout your own name, and your every relative's name too.. just make sure the numbers to be murdered are perfectly clear to the killer. Last but not least.. you can just stand there fussing and flapping like a murder of crows when the knife comes down. Excellent population reduction I suppose..? This is realism! Hahahahahha. Now gimme my money back!
Mary Poppins Returns (2018)
Nonsense, long.. with music that assaulted my ears
It's a whole boring game with a bunch of bland mini games inside. Mary Poppins defies every law of physics just to muck around like little a bored idiot while other characters jump up and down with excitement. Meanwhile psychopath villains who should have been crushed are left to thrive. Mary is a musical of laxative kind that turned my stomach upside down. Watch this if you haven't been to an emergency department in a long time and would like to.
Mortal Engines (2018)
Director guilty of being too close to the monitors.. and jacking too much coffee
Whoever directed this darn thing forgot to take breaks and re-watch his cuts from fresh perspectives.
Underneath this amazing concept.. here lie my disappointments:
No sign of damage from 21th century - Earth doesn't reset back to grasslands in 1000 years (look at Egypt)
Unrealistic scales - no trees or people to compare sizes and moving cities look like toys
Dialogues and scripts straight from Home & Away
Garden-variety psychopath villain whose death is very much unconfirmed
Plots like bugs bunny with real life bunnies to deliver the lines
Wasteland with plenty of washing machines - costumes are all brand new, very clean and vibrant!
Discontinuity level of DC's superheroes
Controlled explosions with parts of the sets ripped away very neatly
Originally meant to be PG-05, but screwed up and copped an M rating in Australia - very violent for 5 year-olds.
Tomb Raider (2018)
Not a failure as some made it out to be (contains Ending Spoilers)
There must have been two versions of this movie out there since I failed to witness the crappy edition some reviewers have mentioned. Note that I have clocked over a 100hours with the Square Enix' 2013 reboot of the game with character of Croft portrayed by Camilla Luddington. This 2018 film wrote itself around the story-arc of said game, squashed it into a 2 hour movie and did a nice job going about it with a simpler mutation of the story structure as a result. Or was it? See spoiler section for more. Alicia Vikander's performance uplifted the show although she wouldn't have been my first pick for the actress playing Croft, my brain gradually ignored her complete and utter lack of bodily fat (I mean a little fat here and there would have been appropriate, innocent and naive according to Croft in the game), eventually I succumbed to her pretty face and the rest was history. I gave action sequences 8, goofy dialogues 6, story 5 and Alicia Vikander 9. See spoiler section for more.
***SPOILERS START HERE***
The ending for Tomb Raider 2018 felt cheap, cut short and left several questioning doubts in my mind.
1. Why oh why? Is Himiko coming back to life a matter of CGI too expensive for you? Damn it!
2. And "Why would you entomb a world-threatening dump (INTENDED TO NEVER AGAIN BE DISCOVERED) in a beautifully dug tunnel sealed with sophisticated entrance, riddled with deadly traps, carved out painted pictorial stone walls -and- colorful gummy-bear puzzles so enticing for the curious (or sugar loving) people to find?" Of course hundreds of idiots are gonna flock to and find that stupid dump, I mean WTFreaking Quack!!!?
3. This would have been a 2013 game ending only if they hadn't run out of budget.
Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Most Toys (1990)
Greed isn't fun to watch
Yes, greed. Seen it. If I were God, I would convert all the greedy into one huge pile of money and burn it. But for now just line them up for the steam-roller queue and don't forget put in reverse for double-tap.
Transformers: The Last Knight (2017)
Be still your mind Michael Bay
"Less is best" should be applied to this movie. Poor director's mind is lost. I hope poor crew's mental health remained intact, some of the actors didn't seem to know what puzzling piece they're performing for, where to look to focus. It was madness! Expensive CGI scenes were chopped up like mowed grass, it was Quantum of Solace all over again. Photography either wanted to capture everything -or- zoomed in so close to suffocate, either way there's no room to breathe. Add camera panning on steroids and you could never enjoy a moment even if it was done so well. It was so upsetting. Continuity was nowhere to be seen but that was a puny issue at that point. This was my second Transformers movie since the first in 2007 and it felt like shock therapy to my brain. Too late to make desserts because luckily it was a $10 ticket and I could walk out without feeling too bad.
Out of 10, I've given it 4 for the effort, plus some funny moments and minus 6 for the disappointment, for wasting my time and for giving me a big bloody headache.
