American Pop (1981)
Possibly Bakshi's Best
American Pop feels like Ralph Bakshi's most complete film as it serves up an ambitious story of a family four generations in the making struggling to gain musical fame. The characters feel dynamic and the movie did a great job at keeping these progressing but not being overly predictable. The movie spends the most time with the third generation and his decent into the summer of love of the 1960s. However, I felt like he wasn't a very likable character compared to the two previous and it hurt the film for me. Music is a big plus for the movie and the rotoscoping style brings a real life to the people. I did feel like the movie rushed a bit to the ending with the last guy who finally does make it, not getting much screen time. Even so there is a lot to like here and I think this is a good contender for Bakshi's best movie. 7/10
