Rosso sangue (1981)
One of the better video nasties!
I thought that this movie was far better than its predecessor, Anthropophagus! Yes, it is basically a rip off of John Carpenter's Halloween in many ways. Is that a bad thing?! No, I don't think so. The film has it's own identity in it's own right besides the influence from Halloween. It has lots of memorable and gorey kills for one, which Halloween didn't shoot for any gore. That is the main reason for the ban. It's a straight forward slasher though. George Eastman plays an unstoppable killing machine once again like the first film. There isn't much of a story or plot besides a priest is chasing him down in the beginning and he ends up getting hurt and going to the hospital. Then he is cured and goes on a rampage. That's the set up we got here. Besides that it's the priest and the cops hunting him down as he continues to kill people. It sounds like your normal slasher, horror film, it is, but, it's kills are what makes it stand out against the rest. I bought the blu-ray and seen it for the first time a couple of days ago and I enjoyed it. It's not an amazing movie by all means but it is a fun and entertaining horror flick! Definitely worth checking out! It doesn't drag on like the grim reaper, the beast, or Anthropophagus (whatever you want to call it).
Antropophagus (1980)
5.5 out of 10 stars! Middle of the road rating.....
I was very interested and excited to see this infamous video nasty...I was definitely let down though. Let me just say, I'm a huge horror film fan. This movie was very boring. It started out decent with a couple of kills, then the rest of the movie just drags on for over an hour. Nothing happens until the last 20-25 mins of screen time. The music is goofy, there's only about 5 or 6 kills, and it feels like everyone is just running around aimlessly the whole time. There are only two gorey scenes that I can guess gave this movie it's ban. I totally get why, but besides that I cannot recommend this movie to anyone unless you are just seeking to see every video nasty and banned film there is. It was watchable but not worth buying. I don't think I will be visiting this one again. It almost put me to sleep most of the time. The ending was somewhat cool, but lackluster and not worth the wait. It's ok for a one time viewing if you have nothing else to watch.
Non ho sonno (2001)
A decent film in the later Argento filmography!
I just finished watching this for the first time in 2020 on vhs lol! I thought it had some good elements for sure. I'm a huge Italian horror fan, giallo fan, Argento fan, and horror fan in general. Some parts really drag on and some of the performances are very dull and terribly dubbed over! I'll keep this spoiler free. The most disappointing part besides all that was the kills. There was only one really memorable and gory one in the whole movie but the rest didn't even show anything! They cut away and you don't even know how they died or what killed them, which makes the kills very lame and tame! There are some beautiful actresses for eye candy to look at. Max van sidow puts on a good performance and so do a few others but in whole the rest suck. So there's a lot of back and forth between good quality and bad quality with just about everything. I did enjoy the twists at the end though and it reminded me of argento's other great giallo movies. I won't get into details because I don't want to ruin anything for you. As an overall package it was a watchable film but not a great film in any way. It's worth at least one watch if you can't find anything you haven't seen yet and if you love Dario Argento's work! You will probably forget it though. The music was actually decent too Goblin did some of it. This is my first quick review by the way...just a little glimpse, summary, and opinion.
