Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge! - Evergreen
There's a reason why it'll always comes across as a breathe of fresh air. There's a reason why something about it is hopelessly hopeful. And the reason is that in every other sequence, DDLJ brings your ideal life's fantasy come alive on the the 70mm canvas. By the time Ruk Ja O Dil plays, the boy next door has answered the industry that he is undoubtedly the King 'Shah Rukh' Khan. He's a culmination of a son, a lover, a friend or just a prankster you wanted to become at some point in your 90's life. The love story finds a perfectly strong anti-hero in Amrish Puri who, with his stentorian voice, will bring justice to his righteous character. And by the time Tujhe Dekha plays, India has found its Romeo & Juliet in Raj & Simran. The veterans, Anupam Kher & Farida Jalal perfectly tone the plot with their dialogue deliveries & performance. With the threads of love, friendship, hope & purposefulness weaved into this fabric of timeless chronicle of romance, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge will make you fall in love (all over again)! #ddlj #bollywood #1000weeksofddlj
PK (2014)
Pk!
If you think Ranchoddas Chanchad was a perfect gloss finish to 3 idiots, head to your nearest theater to catch his unblemished matte contemporary, PK. Rajkumar Hirani & Abhijat Joshi have yet again spun a cotton candy of inescapable issue of religion flavored with ample innocence of PK to provide a highly potent perspective on humanity. Mr. Perfectionist doesn't seem to be complacent with his stardom & pulls off a superb show. However, the reasoning (read as climax) may not be as strongly conveyed as suppose to how it's done in O.M.G. This is because the latter's conviction of reasoning is more palpable & sensitizing. PK will leave you smiling & mellowed but may not leave you inspired. And just when you feel satisfied with the bountiful love for PK, make sure you don't miss the special cameo! All said, PK is put up nicely & is a sure-shot winner all the way. #pk #bollywood
Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015)
Dumb Laga Ke Haisha!
A blemished old shop/house, a set of kaput cassettes from the 90s, an ordinary locality, a out-of-action Kumar Sanu & a loser Prem Prakasss Tiwari. This is how Yash Raj has opened its 2015 innings. But don't go by the unappealing backdrop because when the above elements come together to react with the satirical approach to love, a beautiful amalgamation called "Dumb Laga Ke Haisha" will be formed. While the veteran Sanjay Mishra & his family will leave you in splits with their smooth & flawless execution, the plain & dowdy Bhumi Pednekar promises to maintain the excitement of the plot. Sharat Katariya's gamble of a different yet congenial approach to love story has paid off. Ayushmann Khurrana would probably feel overwhelmed after delivering the best performance of his career so far. The on-screen chemistry along with sublime characterization makes Dumb Laga Ke Haisha a "Must Watch" smile emoticon. #dumlagakehaisha #bollywood
NH10 (2015)
nh10
15 years back RGV made a film called "Jungle". While you may or may not be a fan of his movies, one special highlight of this one was the tension between the goons and Urmila Matondkar/Fardeen Khan. When your plot has a lot of hide-seek-chase-repeat sequences it has to keep the audiences on their toes. NH10 perhaps misses that edginess. If X-axis was direction & Y-axis was story/screenplay, NH10 would make a sine curve. A strong subject & a bold intent like NH10 misses out on a barbaric antagonist who'd make the women throw their 'chappal' on the screen. Where Anushka Sharma keeps the momentum going, you might not HATE Darshan Kumaar (at the most you'll dislike him) or the other thugs. Despite the lack of knife-edge discourses & non-exciting storytelling, it would be safe to say Anushka's Clean Slate Films has survived an " almost miscarriage-d baby production ". That being said, it is a definite & a good move by the actress. Overall with the flaws / misses, NH10 is yet, a definite one-time watch! #nh10 #bollywood
Dil Dhadakne Do (2015)
Dil Dhadkne Do! - Let your heart sail!
If you take fermented actors like Hrithik, Farhan & Abhay, distill their talents in the creative stills of Reema Kagti & Zoya Akhtar & put them in the lyrical cask of Javed Akthar, you get a brilliantly blended Zoya experience called Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. And now take this 'experience' & add sugar-like Ranveer Singh, lemon-like- sour Anil Kapoor & a dash of interesting flavor like Shefali Shah. That's right! you get a "Zoya Sour"; commonly known as Dil Dhadkne Do. You don't compare these two because they have their own place in the party. Ranveer Singh is like that student who is expected to score 90% & does it deftly. But its the old stager Shefali Shah who ushers a germane feel in the plot & that too in a neat organic mode. The plot does seem to 'skid' a bit & rushes through some "favourable plug ins". For eg, a flashback sequence between Anil Kapoor & Farhan OR Farhan & Priyanka Chopra would have propelled even more relevant emotions & would've expanded the cultural horizon of the Mehras for the audience. That being said, the presence of the looking-in-charge Farhan Akhtar & the naturally crafted comic timing of Anil Kapoor have overridden the gaps. The indispensable Zoya-Reema/Farhan-Ritesh combination might just have "over-invested" a bit but that does not take away the reason for these splendid film-makers to celebrate a magnificent production. With a feel-good storyline, innate direction & Carlos Catalan's visually appealing feat, let your heart sail with Dil Dhadkne Do! #dildhadknedo #bollywood
Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015)
Tanu Weds Manu Returns - And How :)
In a recent surprise, the Oxford Dictionaries has decided to reevaluate the term 'Ingenious'. And while it may seem completely bizarre, after careful consideration, here's how this word will be seen/used/felt: KANGANA (original - ingenious) adjective (Of a person) Clever,Original, and Inventive "Her kangana performance won her many accolades" Because how often do you see an actor pulling off a double role as if it were played by two different people? Two distinct characters, two distinct accents, two distinct moods & one Kangana Ranaut. Yet again, the 28 year old's resplendent performance would keep your eye-blinks to the minimum. Her struggles are reflected in her unerring execution & delivery. R Madhavan's subtle character brings a tonal value to the plot. But it's high time we embrace this actor who has beautifully matched Kangana's brilliance with his competent skills. Deepak Dobriyal. A great supporting cast scales a clichéd movie plot to an entertaining Tanu Weds Manu Returns. Aanand Rai makes right investments in the important aspects thereby making him a successful storyteller. Overall with rib-tickling dialogues, magnificent cast & far from least an adorable & heartwarming Kusum, TWMR's swagger definitely lage saaxxyy! #tanuwedsmanureturns #bollywood
Piku (2015)
Piku - The peaceful feeling after a nature's call!
So one day God showed up & said "I'm bestowing you with the talents of one filmmaker you'd like to become. Tell me his/her name!" "Hrishikesh Mukherjee or Basu Chaterjee" replied the exciting & prudent pair of Juhi Chaturvedi & Shoojit Sircar. And thus history repeated itself in Indian cinema with lightweight entertainment & pragmatic story lines hitting the screens. If you're a 70s kid you'll feel thankful & if you're a 90s kid you should feel grateful because Piku doesn't happen everyday (despite happening everywhere). It'd be too trivial to write anything about Amitabh Bachchan. He's beyond any criticism or appreciation. He commands the camera. But if there's one solid actor who exists in a liquid state, that would be Irrfan Khan. You fill him up in a carafe of a role and he'll pour the realism of that character. His beaming performance asks you "Is there anything I can't do?" Deepika is definitely evolving more as an actress with every film and year. And its endearing to see that. The relationship of an overprotective father & a keeping-up-with- times daughter has been captured magnificently in a heartwarming plot of not over-done performances, no fancy artifacts & an easy- going Piku. Kolkata becomes a character in itself & blushes with its freshness & beauty. If you've ever experienced the feeling after attending an "emergency nature's call", you'll be coming out with a similar peaceful feeling after witnessing a must-watch Piku. #piku #bollywood
Bombay Velvet (2015)
Bombay Velvet!
If you get a string of frames where crude ambitions with raw lust for opulence & perennial conspiracies interlace with impeccable crescendo of trumpets in the background, what do you create? That's right! An era of newly-independent India hustling with 'Influencers' & anti-socialists; an era where white collars outshone black deeds & an era where crime was more suave & sexy and less brutal & violent. Welcome to Bombay Velvet! The perfectly 'CGI-ed' backdrop creates a credible establishment to foster Johnny Balraj's big shot dream & offers a charismatic collision with Rosie's edgy life. What's probably missing in this mammoth movie is the tightening of the screenplay (specially in the 2nd half) which would have made it gripping and would've raised more 'oompphss' or 'yeaaahhs' in the minds of the audience. Ranbir Kapoor is nifty but misses out (by an inch) on the 'hunger' which Emraan Hashmi had in OUATIM. If you go without any pre-conceived notions, then Karan Johar makes a formidable acting debut. But the star? Amit Trivedi. Pure brilliance who has managed to add favourable taste to the moods. All in all, this high-budget experiment of Anurag "Common Man's Scorsese" Kashyap is definitely worth a watch! #bombayvelvet #bollywood
Margarita with a Straw (2014)
Margarita, With a Straw! - Brilliance at next level!
Quoting in a broader sense, there are 3 kinds of actors: 1. Humans who make great actors 2. Actors who make great humans And the 3rd...........? Book a show of "Margarita With a Straw" to experience the 3rd kind called Kalki Koechlin. In a snap you'll confront to the prowess & virtuosity of this super-skilled woman only to fall in love with her (again). 'Laila' will instantly conquer your heart with her eyes & body language. It is tough to imagine people with cerebral palsy. What's tougher is to admire & respect their choices around their sexuality & life in general. And MWAS's vulgar-free modus operandi enables us to do this. The subtle-yet-bold performance from Kalki & her journey of discovering her sexual choices is substantial & heart-warming at the same time. Overall, in a society like ours where we witness a cocktail of strong opinions, it might just be a liberating escapade to have Shonali Bose's Margarita.......With a Straw! smile emoticon #margaritawithastraw #bollywood
Detective Byomkesh Bakshy! (2015)
Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!
If Anurag Kashyap is held at a gun point and if he is asked to name one contemporary to make a movie, chances are high he'd close his eyes & name this man called Dibakar Banerjee. With a 135 min high intensity plot running with full vigour & zeal, the lickety-split Byomkesh Bakshy will keep you surmising, inquisitive and your gray matter unbent. It is close to impossible to sit back & relish that popcorn, since each enigmatic frame contains you completely with its mystery and question marks. And even before you know it, you reach the zenith in the story only to realize how a common whirl of a person missing in Calcutta turns out to be a whirlpool with Calcutta at the center of it. Sushant Singh Rajput delivers a path-breaking personal best & there's no reason for him to turn back. Overall with the pace, the convolution of the mystery & a brilliant storytelling, Detective Byomkesh Bakshy is a definite watch! #detectivebyomkeshbakshy #bollywood
