The Apartment (1960)
Always follow what your gut tells you!
I begin by expressing my profound admiration for the 1960s, a decade that holds a special place in my heart, particularly in the realm of cinema. The 60s witnessed monumental events, both on Earth and beyond, and two instances that stand out are Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin's historic walk on the Moon during the Cold War-era Space Race and the groundbreaking contributions of filmmaker Billy Wilder.
Drawing a parallel between these significant milestones, I find a compelling analogy between Wilder's film "The Apartment" and Armstrong's first steps on the lunar surface. In the world of cinema, "The Apartment" marked a revolutionary moment for Wilder, akin to Armstrong's historic lunar walk. It served as a catalyst, sparking a cinematic revolution that reverberated through subsequent works.
While Wilder's filmography of the 60s includes notable works like "One, Two, Three" (1961), "Irma la Douce" (1963), and "Kiss Me, Stupid" (1964), it is undeniable that "The Apartment" was the genesis of his cinematic journey during that era. The film laid the foundation for Wilder's distinctive style and narrative prowess, setting the stage for the subsequent masterpieces that followed.
Random Hearts (1999)
Slow & boring
I adore Harrison Ford's roles in Indiana Jones, Blade Runner, The Fugitive, and even his brief appearance in Apocalypse Now. Like other brilliant actors, it's delightful to witness him embrace more relaxed roles occasionally. However, in this film, he becomes the train that never arrives at the station. While the premise holds a Disney-esque charm, the execution falls short, leaving us with a substantial void. The movie is burdened by lackluster dialogue, overly saturated visuals, and a screen treatment that feels amateurish. The year '99 was an amazing time for movies. Films like Fight Club, The Matrix, American Beauty, Magnolia, and many more changed the movie industry forever-all in one year. It's sad to see that this movie remained in the past.
Mystic River (2003)
An initial 9
An initial 9 turned into a 7, here's why.
After I finished the movie I got a feeling of accomplishment. "Great movie " I thought. The next day I was thinking about how life may not have any rules and how this film framded this. We are on a blank pice of paper trying to figure out where to go. Society tryes to draw lines on that paper for us to follow. This movie shows us the hard truth of reality by fighting society. Deep message. Too bad the directing was done poorly with little imagination. We haven Sean Penn who is killing it in this role but the others, not so much. No real colors and edited kinda forced. But the end put me off the most. I recived the vibes of a Martin Scorsese wannabe. Goodfellas inspired. Maybe in time my opinion will change and develop in something else but for now this is it.
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)
A theatrical experience
What a movie! I would like to start with the actor that makes everything possible, Peter Sellers. He manage to play three different persons so well. Ether if he's Grup Captain Lionel Mandrake, the president or, my favourite, Dr. Strangelove, the acting is well through and executed. That was something I wanted to take of my chest, going back to the general movie. Build on a comedy bases the plot its complex, having two word powers in a conflict, but its delivered to the audience in a simple way by using funny dialogue and silly characters. Props to Stanley Kubrick for delivering another move to think about late at night. In a way it reminded me of "A Clockwork Orange" ,where people with important titles often behave like children. A movie with lots men and only one woman. That one single woman is seen by the viewer as woman were sown by society in the '60. Report forward, no real opinion and waiting for the lover to come back home. Meanwhile the men are killing each other and speech with no real fear about the end of the world as we know it. I would've like to seen more woman actors in this movie. The acting and dialog were pretty good. The reason why the total its 7 its because of the editing and effects, the poor chose for music and a few small elements that would've made the movie more watecheble. There were a few scenes where I just got bored and start watching the time to see how much more I have till the finish.
The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976)
Fun for the whole family!
Despite the low grade, let me tell you, this was an entertaining movie. No doubt about it. The actors seemed to have so much fun during filming. I got the feeling that I was watching a theatrical experience where me and my friends were laughing together. Its true, it did not have the most advance editing and effects and the theme was not impressive but the excision made it all fun to watch. It's not easy to make a comedy, how would've thought that some scrambled dialogue and failed attempts of murder is the key to success? There is not a lot to say about this movie, even if it's not deep and we don't have glimpses of what the characters are thinking, I still love to watch it just because its not meant to tell you something, it's meant to make you smile. I like that!
American Beauty (1999)
Good stuff
I did not expect that! Sex, drugs, obsession, it has it all. What seems as just another movie about returning, it's actually the definition of deconstructing a character just to build it again in a more powerful way. All this while an amazing soundtrack helps create the scenes. I'm a big fan of classical music in film, or no music at all. A good example of that is "No country for old men", where we as spectators can enjoy pure cinema. Sam Mendes, the director did a great job at painting on a canvas with few characters and using a visual effect to his advantage. One of my favourite scenes was early in the film, when Laster was in his bed and from the ceiling roses were coming down. And there she was, a projection of a perverse imagination. Speaking of the protagonist, Kevin Spacey was amazing, as usual. The one actor that surprised me was Mean Suvari playing Angela, the hot girl. She is known for so called comedies like "American Pie", this was probably her most important role so far. The star how shined the brides was Alan Ball. You have not seen him in the movie, but you most certainly felt him. I guess the rolle coaster big success continues because besides this, I don't know what else did he wrote. Yes, he's the genius behind all the monologues and cringe dialog that was just so good. But there are some aspects that I would've like to seen made batter. First, there were 'dead' scenes where nothing really happened. As a viewer I was floating around in space, hoping for something. The scene where Carolyn went into her daughters room just to slap her, or the scene with Laster flirting with his wife got interrupted by a potential spill of a bear. We already know the grounds of their marriage, no point in rubbing that in our face. Second, more Laster! I wanna know how he feels. After some monologue lines the movie just abandoned him. The 'it' factor was so big because of the end. I enjoyed it!
