Guyver (1991)
Compellingly awful
I haven't seen this movie in a while, but whenever I catch it on TV, usually very, very late at night, I can't turn away. I give this 5 stars out of 10 because of its compelling awfulness. While the movie isn't quite something Uwe Boll would vomit onto a screen, if you're looking for great cinema, well, look elsewhere. I think the very fact that JJ from "Good Times" was cast speaks for the quality of the movie. Nevertheless, if you want to turn your brain off for an hour or so, there are worse ways to spend it than watching this utter train wreck in slow motion of a film. If you like MST3K, this would be a perfect film to eviscerate. Still, it could have been much, much worse. After all, it could be "House of the Dead"...
Cold Fusion (2001)
Truly amazing film
I scarcely know where to begin with this movie. The various skiing and other athletics shown are top-notch. The composition, cinematography, and editing make you feel like you were there. Everything about this film displays a love of what they do, whether it be the athletes or the production crew, and shows a great deal of humanity and humor in places. Finally, the soundtrack meshes perfectly with the action on the screen. In one scene, the music was so ethereal that I was almost driven to tears, while in others, the driving guitars enhanced the adrenaline rush from the action on the screen. In short, if you're familiar with Warren Miller's body of work, you won't be disappointed, and if you're not, you're in for a real treat. If I had to make one suggestion, it would be that this film be viewed on IMAX, but since I don't even know if it was filmed in that format, the DVD is more than good enough.
