Divines (2016)
Don't let the IMDb blurb fool you
This is not a boy-meets-girl story. This is a heart-wrenching and breathtaking story, with some of the best acting I've seen all year. An unparalleled coming of age tale full of beauty and sadness and truth. This is worth every single minute and then some. An absolute must watch-- you won't regret it.
Table 19 (2017)
Don't Bother
Don't waste your time. This is a crummy movie about how awful men are, which most people probably know without have to sit through an hour of poorly paced/written/edited scenes. Just about everything in this was far-fetched and unrealistic (except that men are pretty awful). Anne Kendrick is better than this.
Évolution (2015)
Visually Stunning & Mentally Provoking
Eerie. The main thing that kept coming to mind as I watched this film was "eerie". I'm not one for jump scares or gore, so maybe that's why I found this more enjoyable than most of the reviewers on here seemed to find it. Contrary to what many of the reviews might say, there really is an impressive story line here. Some moments don't entirely make sense to me yet, but I have a feeling a re-watch would change that. I think the title gives an ideal framework for the overall plot. The "mothers" (possibly mermaids, possibly medical experiments themselves?) seem to be playing god and pushing evolution down an unprecedented path. The themes of the ocean make me think of the young boys as seahorses, carrying offspring and supporting them. The repeating color red in relation to Nicholas is foreshadowing from the get-do: often symbolizing life and revolution, Nicholas seems to be the only person on the island who is trying to fight the current. Definitely artsy, definitely conceptual, definitely not for everyone. However, I think this is some of the most spell-binding cinematography I've seen in quite some time, and easily the eeriest film I've ever seen.
Black Mirror: The National Anthem (2011)
Worst Episode of Black Mirror to Date
Because of the stand-alone nature of the Black Mirror episodes, Netflix streams them starting with Season 3 and working its way towards Season 1. I have already seen all of season 3 and 2, and thankfully I have, because if this had been the first episode I saw, I would never have continued watching. The show has been increasingly and utterly gripping, mind-boggling, thought-provoking, and astoundingly brilliant. Each episode leaves me with more to contemplate and marvel over than the previous one. However, this episode was disgusting and pointless. I found nothing redeeming, believable, or thought-provoking about it. To any new viewers, I advise starting with season 3. Hopefully the show didn't lose any first time watchers over this pathetic episode.
