Queer Eye: Brasil (2022)
Get the hankies ready
So fabulous to see how the QE concept translates to different cultures and across continents. The Brazil QE is by far my favourite. The fab 5 are, like their German and American sisters, super likeable and genuine. Tears flowed for episode 1, 2 and 3. The show captures the Brazilian joie de vivre and is very relatable on so many levels. I'm gonna totally binge watch the rest of the season. More please Netflix!
Izakaya Bottakuri (2018)
Insight into Japanese culture
It's like being a fly on the wall of a local neighbourhood pub/restaurant. Likeable characters with very subtle storyline intertwined with cooking up simple dishes. Charming and with humor. The old customers are funny and charming and it feels authentic and well acted. Wish there was another season.
Thibaan × BNK48 (2020)
Feel good but all over the place
Cute movie with an interesting storyline but some weird editing. City girl band has to go up country to learn the ways of Isaan in order to change their style. Not quite sure where they were going with the storyline as it is a bit all over the place. Nevertheless some cute parts and some of the acting was spot on.
Singapore Social (2019)
Pretentious millennial waffle
Utterly tedious, give it a wide berth.
The dialog is ridiculously phoney and feels forced. Throwing a few four letter words into a discussion doesn't make it any more watchable or trendy. What where the producers of this garbage thinking?
The I-Land (2019)
In a word garbage
Totally ghastly, from script story line acting and characters there are no words to describe how appalling bad this is. Give it a very wide berth.
Queer Eye: Black Girl Magic (2019)
genuine empathy and compassion
This episode really sums up the overall approach to the show. Its not only about the tear jerking reality of the individuals who are the focus of each episode, but you get a sense that this bunch of guys really do care and have empathy with the people they encounter.
Its not overtly sentimental or corny but shows the reality that many people, who dont fit societies appetite for conformity, struggle with in coming to terms with their lives, sexuality, situations.
I for one am an avid fan of the show. Particularly Karamo who seems to be such a great role mode for anyone struggling with identity and acceptance.
A real winner. I hope that Jess is doing well and thriving. It would be great to catch up with the individuals featured in the show 6 month or a year down the line to see how their lives have been impacted or how they are have changed as a result of being featured in the series. Hats off to the producers for positive messaging that we can all benefit from.
Pose (2018)
Flawless
The most moving TV series I can recall watching. Often painful to watch but bittersweet and funny all at the same time. The acting, the script, the setting are all flawless. Kudos to the writers producers and directors. I defy anyone not to be moved by the performances.
The Final Table (2018)
Annoying as crap
What's with the dull loud host? Irritating music does nothing to endear itself, why not take a leaf out of UK bake off slow down the pace and provide a bit more of backstory to the contestants without over traumatizing everything. I was irritated after about ten minutes and fail to see any value to this show. Netflix can sure do better.
Tidying Up with Marie Kondo (2019)
Am almost inspired to clean up my home
Loved the first episode the Friend family so adorable for a reality show it seemed quite genuine and believable. Marie has a great aura and personality its no wonder she has become such a global phenomena. Did struggle with the sub titles I wish they would put them in black background impossible to read most of the time. LOOK fwd to watching other episodes.
Hwayugi (2017)
enjoyable if somewhat confusing
I binge watched first 3 episodes but struggled to fully understand the plot. Good cinematography and special effects and the main characters are well developed. Seems they spent a lot on production and mostly filmed on location which also makes it more interesting to get an insight into South Korean culture. Am hoping the storyline becomes a bit clearer as the season progresses.
The two lead actors have great screen presence and well matched, there is definitly a good rapport there thrown in with some decent K-pop, am assuming they are both already celebrities in their own right - looking forward to viewing the rest of the series.
Kam sam mi da .....
Somebody Feed Phil (2018)
Inappropriate presenter
The filming, the food, the locations are all sadly underrepresented by Phil who is sadly unpleasant to watch and at times inappropriate and plain cringeworthy.
Surely Netflix could have found someone more culturally appropriate, less patronising and easier on the eye? Shame cos I think who ever did the ground work found some great places to film and show of the country cuisine. Seriously who really cares to watch him skype his elderly Jewish parents and show them so called exotic fruit - not me for sure.
As mentioned in another review the intro theme song is equally as ghastly.
Moving right along .....
