Duel (1971)
Brilliant, ambitious directing.
I must admit it starts off a little slow but before the movies is half way over it will be abundantly clear that you are witnessing the work of a brilliant director. Every camera angle expertly calculated by Steven Spielberg from bold, hard close-ups to desert panoramas. A lot of mirror images and low close to the ground shots from a specially designed camera car. The scene at the railroad crossing is truly spine tingling. This is hailed as the best made for TV movie ever made and I am inclined to agree. From a directing standpoint I would rank it right up there with The Good,The Bad, and The Ugly. Highly recommended.
The Monkees: The Devil and Peter Tork (1968)
THE very best one.
Most Monkees episodes are non-stop nonsense. Not this one. An EXCELLENT, INTELLIGENT script. Monty Landis's portrayal of Mr. Zero is priceless as is Micky Dolenz's cross-examination of Attila the Hun in court.
UFO: The Psychobombs (1970)
Cool as hell.
This is the coolest episode ever. Cool beyond description. The sound effects, the music,
the directing, all just amazing. I communicated with Michael Billington via email years ago. He recounted that the episode had " a certain polish" to it. Just goes to show sci-fi doesn't need to be campy and nerdy.
